Saudi Woman Detained for Defying Driving Ban

Saudi Woman Detained for Defying Driving Ban
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Authorities detained a Saudi woman on Saturday after she launched a campaign against the driving ban for women in the ultraconservative kingdom and posted a videotape of herself behind the wheel on Facebook and YouTube to encourage others to copy her.

Manal al-Sharif and a group of other women started a Facebook page called “Teach me how to drive so I can protect myself,” which urges authorities to lift the driving ban. She went on a test drive in the eastern city of Khobar and later posted a video of the experience.

“This is a volunteer campaign to help the girls of this country” learn to drive, al-Sharif says in the video. “At least for times of emergency, God forbid. What if whoever is driving them gets a heart attack?”

Human rights activist Walid Abou el-Kheir said al-Sharif was detained by the country’s religious police, who are charged with ensuring the kingdom’s rigid interpretation of Islamic teachings are observed.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world to ban women — both Saudi and foreign — from driving. The prohibition forces families to hire live-in drivers, and those who cannot afford the $300 to $400 a month for a driver must rely on male relatives to drive them to work, school, shopping or the doctor.

Women are also barred from voting, except for chamber of commerce elections in two cities in recent years, and no woman can sit on the kingdom’s Cabinet. Women also cannot travel without permission from a male guardian and shouldn’t mingle with males who are not their husbands or brothers.

The campaigners have focused on the importance of women driving in times of emergencies and in the case of low-income families. Al-Sherif said unlike the traditional argument in Saudi Arabia that driving exposes women to sinful temptations by allowing them to mingle with policemen and mechanics, women who drive can avoid sexual harassment from their drivers and protect their “dignity.”

Through Facebook, the campaigners are calling for a mass drive on June 17. To encourage women to get behind the wheel, al-Sharif went for a drive on Friday as another activist filmed her. Posted on YouTube and Facebook, it has now garnered more than 11,000 supporters.

Dressed in a headscarf and the all-encompassing black abaya all women must wear in public, al-Sharif said not all Saudi women are “queens” who can afford to hire a driver. She extolled the virtues of driving for women, saying it can save lives, and time, as well as a woman’s dignity. Al-Sharif said she learned how to drive at the age 30 in New Hampshire.

“We are humiliated sometimes because we can’t find a taxi to take us to work,” she said.

On their Facebook page, the group says women joining the campaign should not challenge authorities if they were stopped and questioned, and should abide by the country’s strict dress code.

“We want to live as complete citizens, without the humiliation that we are subjected to everyday because we are tied to a driver,” the Facebook message reads. “We are not here to break the law or demonstrate or challenge the authorities, we are here to claim one of our simplest rights.”

    OK…
I need somebody to take a bit ‘o’ time to explain to me just exactly…kinda’…what sorta‘ ’universal truth’ or
maybe even what teeny-tiny little ‘nugget of wisdom’ folks like me (ESPECIALLY us “infidels”) are supposed to gleen from this ‘From-On-High’ stuff.
I mean, I don’t want to miss something here…we‘re talkin’ about ALL the future generations.
I certainly wouldn‘t want an epiphany to ’fall through the cracks’.

These poor women. I feel so sorry for them. They are no better than slaves and treated worse. How horrible it must be to not have control of your own life. They go from the control of the father to control of the husband. They are treated like children and always have to have a male family member in charge of them. Sharia law is behind it all. Why would these men ever want to give up the full control they have of the women in their lives. They are kings and the women are their slaves and their faith supports they way they live.

The problem with the Muslim world is that half of their population has no voice. If the Muslim world is ever going to pull its head out of its proverbial ass it will have to start listening to its wives, mothers, sisters and daughters. Until then, expect more of the same; stupidity, insanity, lack of ownership of their problems (Blaming Israel and the West for all their problems.) and a world where every New Year’s Day heralds the start of Dark Ages.

On the other hand, 50% fewer cars on the road means that the price of gasoline will likely drop. It also means that there will be 50% fewer idiots who don’t use turn signals, pull out in front of me, and talk / text while driving. Maybe this ain’t such a bad thing after all… I‘m just sayin’…

Driving is NOT a right, it’s a privilege. Granted here in America women have the right to take drivers’ education and then take a written, and behind the wheel test. If a woman, or a man for that matter, fails either or both of the tests, she or he does NOT have the right to drive a vehicle. Unfortunately for the women of Saudi Arabia their government/religious leaders do not grant them the privilege of even learning to drive, let alone actually drive. These women should be working towards the separation of church and state if they do not want to be breaking any laws by driving. (I really don’t understand how Mohammad foresaw the need to ban women from driving.)

It’s not oppression till the people there say it is. We justified wiping out indigenous american cultures on the grounds that they were “barbaric”..The Romans did the same under their empires.Imperialist powers always justify meddling with indiginous people [really when they steal their land[Israel] or resources ]on the grounds that they are morally superior people.A lot of people have died ,suffered and had their cultures destroyed by imperialist powers on the grounds that they were morally superior. Now we justify the countles deaths of men women and children in Afghanistan on the grounds that they oppressed women. The thing is unless they ask for help we have no business killing people for their own good.Again, culture is transmitted by women and when and only if those women want to change their culture ,should we medle with them. The Libyans are now asking us to help them overthrow a brutal regime but we are reluctant to do so and so too the Syrians who are being slaughtered every day.And I have been to Afghanistan[before the soviet invasion ]and it was so poor the was hardly any food and i saw children freeazng in the cold-the thought that we’re killing them now is horrendous to me.[the poorest people on earth-it was like going back thousands of years.]Stealing people to be used as slaves is not the same as indigenous women transmitting a culture of subservience to men to their offspring. One is coersion, the other is a cultural belief.

RoseEllen–stop the recording of “culture is transmitted by women.” Okay, so you took a sociology course, we get it. But what does that have to do with women living in a patriarchal construct that has it’s hands tightly around their throats? Don’t you imagine all these measures in the middle east, the restrictions on driving or even being seen in public without a male protector, the enforced wearing of burkas and hijabs, are measures males have instituted in order to weaken women thereby lessening their ability to do anything about their oppression? We know that women have been complicit in their own subjugation, yes, one has only to call to mind the trembling hands of an aged Chinese grandmother tightly binding and deforming the healthy feet of a crying 6 year old granddaughter. It does not follow that these same women have the POWER to change the pain and suffering instituted by the men who rule over them. It took 2 thousand years for that form of torture to be eradicated from China and I daresay it was because of women that it was finally repealed. Please do not believe that because they live in subjugation and terror, that they enjoy it. Don’t do them that disservice.

Indigenois people are entitled to their backward cultures. The world does not belong to us.If one day those people want to come into western enlightened values then they will.It is none of our business. And as the uprisings taking place there show, it was our supporting these brutal dictators that impeded the growth of enlightened values from taking place there[any dissenters would be tortured ,imprisoned or killed].This served our cheap oil intersts and cold war and military bases interests and support of islraeli expansion political interests. All those people had to cling to was their “religion” and our meddling there helped ****** their progress. Our hands are not clean. But also it is true that we too had to struggle for every right that we now have.Culture is transmitted by the women and when the day comes arab women want to change their culture they will.if they don‘t that’s their business too.Aparrently there is a movement afoot to do that. But lest we feel too morally superior, there is a logic to their culture.A desert culture in a preindustialized world has good reason to allow men to take on more than one wife and not allowing women to drive was seen as a way to protect women from abuse by males.[a relic from the days of being srtanded in the desert and at the mercy of the good will of whoever came by ,perhaps]We too have ample occasins where women are abused by men when women are defenseless

Rose Ellen–I resent how you say what happens in Saudi Arabia is none of OUR business. You may not want it to be any of your business but do not presume to know what I do or do not want my business to be about. If I want to learn about the plight of women from any other indigenous population and actually lend my support in whatever way I believe may prove helpful, I will. Obviously these brave, young Arab women are wanting to adopt our “enlightened” ways even while avowing love for their country and culture.

As for your explanation of why this patriarchal oppression works for desert dwellers, I would wager that none of these women taking part on June 17 have spent much time in a tent lately. It doesn’t follow that women are safer when you take away their ability to extricate themselves from dangerous situations. The 32 year old woman in the video said she had no ride home one night and that men were harrassing her in passing cars as she walked alone. Does that sound to you like safety? It’s bad enough that there are countries where men engage in this type of sexist degradation without American women–you know, all us enlightened types–trying to excuse or rationalize it.

It’s bad enough that there are countries where men engage in this type of sexist degradation without American women–you know, all us enlightened types–trying to excuse or rationalize it.

Remember and never forget: These are the same women who raised the male children and transferred the culture to the men who became the 9/11 murderers.

Or maybe they raise their boys to blow themselves up so they might be rid of them.

      Who knows?

Another Facebook victory. Self incrimination in a country with very little room for leniency — not a great idea. Remember the kid that decided to spread Graffiti in Singapore?

Don’t piss off the men with the machetes and a penchant for beheadings. Remember, this is the religion in peace, I’m sure that they are just protecting the poor women from the stress of traffic in the desert.

A couple things. (1) Dang, this girl has pretty solid English. (2) Her Arabic doesn’t sound like Gulf Arabic (Saudi Arabic). She almost sounds Jordanian to me. Anyone here speak Arabic and able to offer a second opinion? Bottom line is this girl seems to be upper class and to have been educated abroad. No wonder she’s defiant and courageous.

And to think the US backs Saudi Arabia, sales arms to Saudi Arabia and pays Saudi Arabia to keep troops in Bahrain to protect Saudi Arabia….Strange isn’t it…..Now why would we go against our values, Constitution and principles to back Saudi Arabia who clearly does not keep our values and principles…….How do Saudi’s feel about Israel or Iran? Enemy of my enemy again? It’s a progressive mess…..

Saudi Arabia is an interesting country needless to say and upon visiting one greatly appreciates the freedom our founders provided for us that we slowly have given away back to Government Progressives on both sides…

Hey rose-ellen (if that is your name), I’ve spent time in muslim countries and the women there are rarely allowed to leave their husbands homes and if they do then they have to be completely covered up. The men are allowed to have 3 wives (more if they can support them all the same, unless one is black) and spend all day trying to make money selling **** to foreigners or getting laid by tourists. Take another bong hit lady and then get some world experience.

Women there should refuse to bear anymore children until they are treated as fellow human beings. I know they have been repressed for centuries, but it was understandable that they did not fight it because of being secluded from the rest of the world. But in today’s world, the media and the internet have shown these women what they are missing and how they are being suppressed. Why haven’t more of them risen up before this?

Okie, you’re talking more than you should. You say, “I agree the Saudi Government is oppressive…Which head of the progressive snake supports the Saudi Government with weapon sales, pays to keep a Naval fleet in Bahrain as well as train Saudi troops? I would say the progressive right…Progressive Left just acts like it doesn’t’t happen…”

Sure the “Saudi government is oppressive.” It’s an inherited dictatorship, and a cruel and vicious one, lead by the royal Saud family (hense the name “Saudi Arabia”). For fifty years or more the US has been very close to the Saudis for two reasons: they sell us oil and they have a stable government in a volatile region that our national security depends on (although the are an iron fisted dictatorship).

My complaint about your posts is your constant references to “progressives.”‘ Progressives support the Saudis, progressives ignore their human rights, etc.

Hardly Okie, given the relationship the US has had with the Saudis through the last 10 Presidents, not to even mention that Bush was closer to the family of Saud that most being an oil man himself.

I can’t make any sense of your post. Please explain yourself. Especially given your, you know, disrespect for the children of David.

Progressive Left is the “handout” machine “democracy” fighters and Progessive Right would be the “War” machine “liberty” Fighters.

Yes JZS Saudi Arabia is an oppresive regime which was helped established by us and now we back and support them….Just like all the other Sunni dicators Iran’s social war has toppled.

Constitutionalist would take care of America….Progressives try to rule the world and put in dictaors…

The Cheese house and Pantry has pretty good food…. I’m pretty sure the owners broke from the normal pactices of the Amish or got approval….Before these were built the Amish hosted dinners at their house… While I do not agree spirtually with the Amish, I will say they are some of the nicest honest people I have met…They really do tend to themselves…Living off the grid at first sounds tough but I must say sometimes I envy the Amish life style…So simple and peaceful….
