Saudi Woman Sentenced to 10 Lashes for Defying Driving Ban

Saudi King Abdullah has given the kingdom's women the right to vote for first time in nationwide local elections, due in 2015. The king said in an annual speech on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 before his advisory assembly, or Shura Council, that Saudi women will be able to run and cast ballots in the 2015 municipal elections. Saudi women now have the right to vote and run for public office, but religious edicts are still holding them back from driving. Taking the nation’s ban on female drivers to new levels, a kingdom court has sentenced a Saudi woman with 10 lashes for driving despite known restrictions.
According to Samar Badawi, the woman, Shaima Ghassaniya, was found guilty of driving without the Saudi government’s permission. It’s interesting to note that edicts are religious proclamations and that the driving ban, though reiterated by officials, is not officially written into Saudi law. The Associated Press writes more about the situation women face in the Middle Eastern nation:
In Saudi Arabia, no woman can travel, work, marry, get divorced, gain admittance to a public hospital or live independently without permission from a “mahram,” or male guardian. Men can beat women who don‘t obey them and fathers or brothers have the right to prevent their female relatives from getting married if they don’t approve of her suitor.
“Right now, women are harassed and they get dragged to courts and nothing has changed in this respect,” said Aboul Khair, who himself has been referred to court after challenging the social restrictions women face as well as other issues. His trial has yet to start.
The ruling, which comes just days after King Abdullah announced that Saudi women will gain the right to vote and run as candidates in local elections, seems to be counterintuitive. After all, it was days ago that Abdullah said, “We refuse to marginalize the role of women in Saudi society and in every aspect, within the rules of Sharia.”
Ghassaniya’s punishment adds some more curiosities to the discussion about women’s rights in the kingdom, considering that this is the first time such a decision has been issued. While women have been detained in the past, sentencing of this sort is a new development, leading one to wonder if this situation will only intensify.
In May, The Blaze brought you the story of Manal al-Sharif, a Saudi woman who launched a campaign against the kingdom’s driving ban. Al-Sharif posted a video of herself driving on both Facebook and YouTube to encourage others to join her in opposing the ban.

Seriously people, if you live under the authority of a monarch and you are considered his/her property, your vote does not matter. Perfect example is the UK. They have a legislative assembly made up of the people, but in the end, they belonf to the queen. They are all slaves. Which is why they don’t have the assumed right of self defense or free speech. They also have no written social contract that guarantees even these basic freedoms. The United States has allowed women to vote for 90 years or so, and probably hasn’t lashed citizens or put them in the stocks for at least that long in major cities. Of course there are the exeptions like the lynching of blacks in the 50s and 60s, and Abu Ghraib, but in general the United States stopped those practices a long time ago.
It‘s been almost 60 years since blacks couldn’t drink out of the same water fountain as whites. That’s a really long time. All of those practices were supported by the Christian religious leaders of the time, almost without exception, but with the passage of time the true word of God has revealed itself. Just a few weeks ago gays were allowed in the military, earning the same status that blacks (who weren’t gay) were given a long time ago. There are even women in the military now. What the Bible says just keeps changing, at least if were to listen to the learned servents of God over time!
Even sixty year ago after WWII we prosecuted people and put them to death for waterboarding and other forms of torture. Thank goodness we took the moral high ground on that! And of course we still, in accordance with the US Constitution and Sharia Law put people to death if we think they killed someone.

We both agreed that it might take 2 or 3 generations for the full, positive effect for this to be felt, but we both thought that it was now trending in the right direction.
Women‘s suffrage in America didn’t not change things right away either.
An analogy comes to mind. The first is from the movie “Force 10 from Navarone”. The commandos set of explosives in a damn & nothing appears to happens. One commando gets upset & the other says give it time. A few minutes later they are running for their lives from a collapsing damn.
You might remember that the World Trade Center was hit & some people with Usama were upset that the towers did not fall. Usuma said be patient. the towers came down.
If the voting continues & becomes “tradition” I don’ see this being reversed & it will lead to better days.

The issue here, that has not been addressed I might add, is that the “Blazers” say things like “We hate all Muslims”, “Islam is the religion of hate” and “ We need to go to war with Iran”. Yet then we get a post like this suggesting we should feel sorry for Arab women.
But using the “Blazers” logic, why should we? People always suggest that Muslims are evil and we should kill them first. Then why would we care about their women? If we cared about their women so much, why do “Blazers” advocate to kill their fathers and brothers with bullets and bombs in the name of “peace and democracy”?
Your logic is flawed, if you truly believe these people shouldn’t even live, then why pity them? UNLESS the logic behind your hate filled argument of killing them all is non-existent.
My favorite part is this argument always comes from the “arm chair patriots”, the ones screaming for blood and murder, and they have never served in the military.
If we cared as much about abolishing the Federal Reserve as we did killing Arabs, our economy might actually be going through a healing process.
