‘Savage Crimes’: Your Guide to the Latest Violence in Israel

Terror groups operating from Gaza continued to fire rockets at southern Israel Monday morning, prompting further engagement of the IDF’s Iron Dome missile-defense batteries, while the Israeli Air Force jets launched attacks on terrorist targets, marking the fourth day of fighting.

The IDF reports more than 180 rockets have been fired from Gaza aimed at civilians in southern Israel since fighting began on Friday.

Residents of Beersheba and Ashdod had seconds to seek cover after “Red Color” alerts were broadcast, indicating incoming rockets. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the morning salvo, reports Israel’s Ynet News.

As one million Israelis continue to be under threat of rocket attacks from Gaza, The Blaze has prepared this tip sheet to help sort some of the facts:

How did it begin?

Some news organizations are reporting the present round of fighting began when Israeli forces killed a terrorist leader in Gaza. But that’s not exactly how it began. It really began when Israeli intelligence obtained information that a terrorist cell was planning a major attack on Israelis via Egypt in the coming days, as occurred last August, when eight Israelis were killed.

Your Blaze Tip Sheet on the Latest Gaza Israel Violence

Zuhair al-Qaisi, Popular Resistance Committees

According to the IDF Spokesman, the real-time intelligence prompted its decision to launch an airstrike at a car in which the Popular Resistance Committees’ (PRC) head in Gaza, Zuheir al-Qaisi was riding, killing him along with another operative on Friday. This was the same group behind the August terrorist attacks. According to the IDF, Qaisi was involved in firing rockets at Israeli civilians and transferring funds from Hezbollah to terror groups in Gaza.

Is Hamas involved?

During the previous escalations of violence in recent years, Hamas has played a key role; however, this time, the group which the U.S. and European Union define as a terror group appears to be sitting on the sidelines. Channel 2 News’ venerated Arab Affairs Analyst Ehud Ya’ari notes this is the first round of fighting between Gaza’s Palestinian terror groups and the IDF in which Hamas has held its guns. Publicly, Israeli officials hold Hamas responsible as the group in control of Gaza; however, the IDF has noticeably been focused on the infrastructure and targets of other terror groups. The Popular Resistance Committees and Islamic Jihad appear to be those firing rockets at Israeli communities outside Gaza and are therefore in the crosshairs of IAF jets.

However, the IDF offered this warning to Hamas lest it decide to engage its fighters:

“Hamas uses other terror organizations to carry out terror attacks against the State of Israel and will bear the consequences of these actions in any future operation embarked upon by the IDF in order to eliminate the terror threat and restore the relative calm to the area.”

What is the IDF targeting?

The IDF reports it is targeting terrorist facilities as well as squads preparing to fire rockets. The IDF posted this nosecone video on YouTube of a weapons cache it destroyed in northern Gaza. Note the secondary and tertiary explosions, indicating the storage of explosives. Terror groups often position weapons storage facilities in residential areas, using civilians as human shields as recently reported by the IDF and a Palestinian human rights activist.

The pro-Israel blogger Challah Hu Akbar combed through Israeli and Palestinian websites in both English and Arabic and discovered that the vast majority of those killed by Israel were bona fide members of the PRC or Islamic Jihad. He included this montage of “martyrs” compiled by Islamic Jihad.

Your Blaze Tip Sheet on the Latest Gaza Israel Violence

Is there an Iran connection?

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday partially blamed Iran for the weekend rocket attacks, while Iran’s Foreign Ministry called Israel’s air strikes “savage crimes” against “the innocent and defenseless Palestinian people.”

Speaking to Likud ministers Sunday night, Netanyahu said, “The fire from Gaza is an Iranian problem, not a Palestinian problem.” Anti-terror officials report Iran funds Islamic Jihad, which is one of the groups launching rocket attacks.

Arutz 7 quotes IDF spokesman Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai:

“Islamic Jihad continues to act as the long arm of Iran, which finances, supports, and encourages it even today with weapons and money that come straight from Tehran.”

How effective has the Iron Dome system been?

Israeli military officials are attributing a 90 percent success rate to the Iron Dome anti-missile system in intercepting incoming rockets. However, no single defense system can provide full coverage or a complete solution. Upon visiting an Iron Dome battery Sunday, Netanyahu said:

“We’ll bolster the Iron Dome (anti-rocket) system, which is performing very well but does not provide hermetic protection…I believe our combination of offensive and defensive capabilities, coupled with our (civilians’) fortitude, is a winning combination.”

Israel has decided to deploy a fourth Iron Dome battery in the coming weeks, says Israel Air Force Col. Tzvika Haimovitch, because the current three-battery deployment is “being stretched to the max.” The Jerusalem Post quotes defense officials who say Israel needs at least
13 batteries to effectively protect itself against rockets fired from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

Your Blaze Tip Sheet on the Latest Gaza Israel Violence

Engineers are examining if a technical malfunction occurred on Sunday, after two rockets were not intercepted and fell on Beersheba, one of which hit a school that was closed due to the violence.

The Jerusalem Post provides more statistics on the Iron Dome:

The Iron Dome is designed to defend against rockets at a range of 4-70 kilometers. Each battery consists of a mini multi-mission radar manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries and three launchers, each equipped with 20 interceptors called Tamirs.

The radar enables Iron Dome operators to predict the impact site of the enemy rocket and if it is slated to hit an open area, to refrain from intercepting it.

This protection comes with a steep price tag: every Iron Dome interceptor costs about $50,000, with two usually being fired toward each incoming rocket.

How are civilians’ living under rocket fire being impacted?

Besides the obvious potential danger associated with incoming bombs, the one million Israelis within range of the terror groups’ rockets are being advised to remain near bomb shelters, safe rooms or other types of cover and not to take unnecessary risks.

Many spent the past three nights in shelters, schools are closed and large gatherings have been canceled, per Home Front Command directives barring gatherings of over 500 people within about 20 miles of Gaza. Channel 2 News profiled two couples who decided to go ahead with their weddings Sunday night, and IDF Radio interviewed a boy celebrating what would likely be a memorable Bar Mitzvah under rocket threat.

To help keep kids distracted, clowns, puppeteers and dancers traveled to southern Israel to provide entertainment amid the sirens and rocket attacks, sponsored by Israel’s Ministry of Culture and Sport as well as private groups like the World Zionist Organization (WZO) and Tarbut L’Israel (Culture for Israel).

Unfortunately,Ii believe “it” is coming our way.
Oobama has suggested to Israel that if they do attack Iran..please don’t do it until
“after the american elections”…otherwise it could hurt his reelection. What kind of leaders do we have?..no don’t answer that, and it is our fault.
The polls show obama is still very popular..i wonder WHAT group..subgroup …are they taking polls from?
      WHO are these people?
WHY would they want this man in office one minute longer than necessary?
AND.. since when did your skin color decide your “electability”? Hell I was never a slave owner, I don’t discriminate…what have I got to prove?..I want our nation to succeed..and Obama’s regime to fail..because there is something terribly wrong with him and the people that follow him.
However, less than half are impressed with his economic leadership. he’s not a leader, he’s a cold hearted child playing at grown up, and by keeping him in office, we allow it.
BTW..we already have drugs and every imaginable form of “evil” coming across our borders already..and it has been going on for many many many years…long before Obama. He has merely condoned it more openly..

Br@dley, to be exact, what Meir Dagan said was that Ahmadinajad is rational but “Not exactly our rationale”, which is a completely idiotic thing to say- it’s the same as saying that a mad man is rational! I‘m sure that when someone thinks he’s a dog, barking and chasing ambulances seems rational. And I’m sure that if you believe in the Mahdi, sponsoring Terror and massacring a nation seems rational. So what’s his point? With all due respect to Dagan, for a while now he has been behaving irresponsibly by abusing the trust the public has in him to promote his own political agenda (I‘m sure for him he’s being rational…). I‘m ashamed of the way he’s behaving and many others in Israel have expressed the same about hi,. A few more points-
As I live in Israel and have had the experience just today of running out of my car in the middle of the road and crouching above my 5 year old niece trying to shield her, while blasts are heard above, I know that Glenn doesn’t lie. I know!
Secondly- Comparing Iran to Nazi Germany is more than appropriate, you ignorant man! Just the name Iran should tell you something. Educate yourself!
As for Restoring Courage, there was a group that picketed outside the event consisting of no more then 20(!) people. The majority of us were and still are grateful to Glenn and all that he has done for Israel. What have done for Israel and the truth lately?! Shame on you for maligning good man…

If America turns its back on Israel – this would mean that God would turn his back on America. If this is true then our Borders would be surrounded by Drug Lords and Muslim Extremest armed with Fast and Furious Weapons waiting to invade the US.

If you think Obama is going to protect our Borders you are mistaken. He would have already done something to stop the flow of illegals into the US.

When called out, they resort to profane insults and blame. Being a man of the world and a veteran, I am tired of our country responding to people who know very little of life and the world. Looking into solving problems of the world involves more than reading a comic book, playing a video game or sucking on a bong. It requires the input from people who have experienced the outside world and have a few scars on their ass to relate to.

Lukerw, not at all. But, unlike you, I do believe that there must be a legitimate reason to kill others and go to war.

As for the history book, you had better read about the King David Hotel, when the targets of these immigrant Jews from Europe and America, in the land that they called Palestine, were the British. Read about how these terrorist Jewish groups hung, then mined the bodies of, Mervyn Paice and Clifford Martin… both non-Palestinians.

You see, once the Jewish terrorists killed and drove out the British with their crimes of violence, they turned on the Palestinians. They drove them out of their homes, and off of their land, and confiscated their businesses, with the exact same violence that they now condemn.

Capitalist Mama, actually you had better look up the Stern Gang, Irgun, and Haganah. Jews, who emigrated to the area from America and Europe, formed illegitimate terrorist groups, exactly like today’s Hamas, Hezbollah, and al Qaeda. They led the violent usurpation of Palestinian land, then called themselves a nation.

If Mexicans did the same in Texas and Arizona we would not call that legitimate, would we? And, don’t let the facts mixed with the truth get in your way.

Last I checked Irgun and Haganah didn’t blow up school buses. Irgun targeted British military facilities and usually avoided targeting civilians while Haganah spent a lot of time sneaking refugees from Europe into the country, defending Jewish villages from Arab rioters, and occasionally raiding British internment camps. I’d be celebrating if Hamas was anything like Irgun because it would be a vast improvement.

      To The-Jerk(off)
Israel gave up 85% of the Palestine Mandate and Arabs swore they would demand no more. The place was called Trans-Jordon. Many Arabs from Palestine moved there. The PLO a headed by The Weasel (Arafat) attempted a coup but were kicked out of the country. (Golly Sgt Catrter! I never knew that) Why aren’t you oinking about those displaced Arabs to be able to return? When the Arabs attacked Israel in 1948, many Arabs left on there on accord with the Arab promise they could confiscate Jewish property once the Arabs won the war. BTW, Arab countries expelled hundreds of thousands of Jews from their countries and the displaced Jews were accepted by Israel. On the other hand, Arab countries refused to allow many Palestinian Arabs into their countries and hence set up barbed wire cities such as Gaza. You also are ignorant on the goal of Muslims be it Palestinian Arabs or any other Arab country. No, it is not to compare Nazi Germany to Palestinians as Nazi Germany were only concerned with eliminating Jews, Gypsies, mentally deficient and other useless people. Muslims want to eliminate all who won’t convert to Islam. And unless you are a Muslim, that includes you! Stupid is as stupid does. I’d appreciate if the Blaze also posted a story about the reporting of some other news organizations on this topic. CNN, for instance, had as their headline: Israel pounds Gaza as death toll rises. Only in the third paragraph did they even mention that Israel was being attacked by rockets and even then it was only, “according to Israeli sources.” Further, the article was written by a Palestinian born journalist accused of doctoring photos to make it appear that Israeli soldiers were abusing Palestinians. It truly discredits CNN as a reliable source of news.

Well I looked a little into Disney. It’s publicly traded, and I couldn’t tell who was the majority shareholder was. While the CEO is Jewish, their board of directors is a hodgepodge of foreigners, a lesbian, and US businessmen/women. There’s one other Jewish person on the board. There’s a wide range of Corporate influence on the board. Banks, IMF, Nike, Starbucks, Google, Facebook, US Treasury Dept. etc.. So at least with Disney, I‘d say it’s more a bunch of greedy lefty corporate globalists, but I don‘t think you say it’s Jewish owned.

I saw on MSNBC this weekend (only saw a small portion) about the Palestinian non-violent movement. The absurdity of this movement is the Palestinian spokesperson took absolutely no responsibility for the violence of the Palestinians. He discounted the rockets firing into Israel as primitive and called Israel the aggressor without answering the question of why Israel went into Gaza in the first place. The program appeared to be a mindless exercise and the short bit that I saw did not really challenge the spokesperson for the ‘non-violent’ movement. There was one woman who did ask a tough question but when he didn’t answer the host, Chris Hayes, redirected without challenging the non-response.

Until those who support Palestine denounce the strapping of bombs to the chests of young men to kill innocent women and children, until they condemn the rockets being launched towards civilians in Israel, until they stop making excuses for hateful rhetoric and teachings being broadcast for the consumption of children in Palestine, then there will be no peace. Palestine could truly lay down their arms and there would be peace but the same cannot be said if Israel were to lay down theirs.

You make my point, Jerk – you make excuses for the violence – of couse children are going to die when Israel defends themselves – the Palestinians use children as homicide bombers and as human shields – of course Israel is going to contain the Palestinians, if they don’t bombs go off on school buses and markets. You never address the one point, however, as you make asinine comment after asinine comment as you troll the pages of the Blaze – if the Palestinians were to lay down their arms, there would be peace but Israel would be slaughtered if they lay down theirs. It is not the policy of Israel to annihilate the Palestinians but it is the policy of the Palestinians to annihilate the Israelis. How do I know my statement which you ignore is true? Because Israel has that ability right now and still they try to talk peace. Arafat was given far more from Begin than he would have ever received – Bill Clinton even acknowledged the failed 2000 Camp David Summit was a failure because of Arafat – and the Palestinian leader showed his true colors when after the failure of the negotiations, he launched a new round of terror acts against Israel.

Dstarr55, you confuse defense with aggression. Where was your argument when foreign Jews bombed the King David Hotel? Where was you argument when the Irgun hung, then mined the bodies of Mervyn Paice and Clifford Martin? You have a selected outrage when it comes to killing, much like most serial killers.

Israel was carved out of territory that was not theirs to take. People from America and Europe took the homes, land, and businesses from other people, once they had the power to do so. America endorsed this theft when the foolish, power seeking, political hack, Truman, began this ill-fated journey.

      @Jerk
Once again you choose your facts and make incongruous comparisons. For one, Irgun warned the British that they were going to blow up the Hotel (which contained a British MILITARY command post) an hour before the explosion and the British did NOTHING. Second, the Jews didn’t steal any land. They either purchased it or settled it when it had previously been unowned. Just because you live on one scrap of land doesn’t mean you can dictate who can settle the land 5 miles away that is otherwise unowned. And if Israel was so intent upon taking their businesses, why do many of them still own businesses?

And you can stop calling what Israel does to protect itself “ghettos”. What was the life expectancy of someone living in a Nazi ghetto? What was the birthrate? It is a fact that the life expectancy of those living in the disputed territory went UP after 1967 and that the population has more than doubled. I don’t see Israeli soldiers taking radios away or banning schools and music. Your comparisons are so farfetched that there isn’t an adjective to describe it.
