What was supposed to be an enjoyable family outing at a McDonald’s restaurant turned into an absolute nightmare for the parents of the 14-month-old baby girl.

The parents, identified as Tevita and Glory, were getting seated at the fast food restaurant when their daughter suddenly began choking on a french fry. The 14-month-old apparently stopped breathing, causing the parents to rush the child to the counter in the front of the McDonald’s in Sydney, Australia to seek help from employees, the Daily Mail reports.

A number of staff members quickly surround the choking baby girl and attempt to assist the terrified parents by rubbing and patting her back, trying to dislodge the fry from her throat. Her mother can be seen crying hysterically while she watches strangers attempt to save her daughter’s life.

(Source: YouTube)

Restaurant Manager James Hatcher told Channel 9′s “A Current Affair” that the mother was screaming: “Save my baby, she’s choking, she’s not breathing!” By the time he had begun trying to save the child, she was already turning blue, he added.

McDonald’s employees were reportedly receiving instructions over the phone from emergency personnel.

One of the customer’s, Naomi Donovan, also stepped in to try to save the girl’s life. She recounted her experience.

“At the time I grabbed her she was limp, really limp, going blue she wasn’t breathing,” Donovan said. “She’s in my hands, I’m staring at her parents screaming and crying.”

After three minutes, which had to feel like an eternity to the child’s parents, the young girl finally starts to breath again.

Doctors said the 14-month-old girl had suffered from a seizure, which caused her to choke. She was kept in a hospital overnight for observation but was able to return home the next day.

The McDonald’s employees were honored with an award for their heroic actions. The incident occurred last month.

Oh God, why producest Thou so many idiotic parents? Why whisperedest Thou not into their dummy ears that it is not good to feed a 14-months young baby with junk food?
    Dear God, Thou disapponest me!

      Glad the child is ok.

As for the comments about punctuation and spelling………..I have been commenting since the conception of the Blaze; the spelling and grammar from the writers and the bloggers is horrible. If I were a troll following most conservative sites, all they need to do is post some of the reports and comments, they are atrocious (and I am sure some of you need to look at a dictionary to see if I spelt that right). Don’t attack me, I am not a teacher, but I make sure that my grammar and spelling are correct. Good grammar is a reflection of myself if I am to be taken seriously. Got Mr. Webster right next to me.

      @RESTORED ONE:
Thank you for a wonderful and comprehensive English lesson.

I’ll try to restore my damaged sight and my damaged lungs that prevent me from normal breathing and hinder me in concentrating on my writing and hopefully I will do a lot less errors in both grammar and spelling.

Meanwhile, I would appreciate very much, if you can write me in my mother tongue (which is Russian,) at least as bad as I write in English.

Thank you for your attention and criticism.
      Regards.

      @RESTORED ONE:

Is it possible that you took my joking use of Old English pronouns for grammar and spelling errors?
May be, you took even Biblical words for errors in grammar and spelling: “And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat”?

As far as grammer goes, is anyone else having a problem with the comments box glitching and you type something and only half of it shows up?

As to the OP, YES it is stupid to feed a 14 month old child WHOLE fries. At least if you’re going to give a child that young junk food, tear the fries up into bite size pieces.

Ill be you are a closet junkie! You eat all the junk food that you can and just try to make it appear that you hate it! Did you read the article? If you had you would have read that the baby had a seizure and that is what caused her to choke on the food. It has noting to do with it being junk food and who made you the food police anyway! Good grief for the days when no one cared what everyone else was eating and kept their comments to themselves.

      Dear Cat,
      1. I’m trying to understand your phrase: “Ill be you are a closet junkie!”
      What language is it?

      2. “Did you read the article?…the baby had a seizure and that is what caused her to choke on the food.” This your phrase shows that you have no slightest trace of knowledge of medicine and blindly trust illiterate journalists:
      a) There is no such thing as an abstract “seizure”. Seizures are of different types: cardiac, apoplectic, epileptic, etc.
It can be, though, a spasm of something (in this case – tonic spasm of oesophagus (gullet)).
Since the girl was choking, it means that a foreign material, in this case – fry, has jammed in the gullet and caused a spasm of it.
The journalist’s “seizure” didn’t occur out from nothing; it has been triggered by the food inappropriate for a 14-month young creature.
I didn’t call for “food police”. I just called the parents IDIOTS.

I am compelled to respond to all the posts about how stupid this mom is to let her 14 month (1yr and 2 month old) baby eat french fries (McDonalds or otherwise) . My grandson is 16 months old and because he had reflux when he was born we had to weigh down his formula with baby cereal when he was only a month old. This prompted his body and he cut 3 teeth by the time he was 3 months. He has a mouth full of teeth and has been eating table foods since before he was 1 yr old. He has gone from needing very small pieces to being able to bite off and chew his food. Every child is not exactly the same in development and what one child is doing at one age another may not. Also the article says the she had a seizure and that is likely what caused her to choke. Did that get skimmed over by some of the commentators? This reaction of what a crappy mom is ridiculous. I bet this scared that Mom so bad she will have to fight the desire to keep her child on pureed foods until she is 20.

The term anal-retentive (also anally retentive), commonly abbreviated to anal,[1] is used conversationally to describe a person who pays such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others, potentially to the detriment of the anal-retentive person. The term derives from Freudian psychoanalysis.

Feeding you baby fast food? really? Feeding a 14 month old a french fry? Really? Honestly, I wonder just how some people manage to raise their kids at all. Great job to the McDonalds employees for trying to help, but you don’t perform CPR on a chocking infant. The parents will probably lawyer up and sue McDonalds for not putting a bilingual warning label on the french fry.

@HI_DON — yo uare absolutely correct. CPR should ONLY be performed after certain criteria have been met. Chocking is not one of them. A swift, but gentle sweep of the mouth to start with, followed by infant heimlich. Never perform CPR on someone who’s heart is beating and the air way is blocked.

I agree everyone needs to know basic emergency response, but immediately beginning CPR is not the answer here. Looking at the video, too many folks all huddled around all trying to help instead of one person taking charge could have been a disaster. Along with no one clearly doing the right thing. You do not immediately do CPR if someone goes non-responsive, especially in this case where the issue is a choking victim. The right answer was to clear the airway, first finger swipe to try to move the obstruction, then infant Heimlich. Watching everyone lay her on the counter and take turns pushing on her chest isn’t the right first aid. The person who grabbed her up and and made some real attempts at thrusts saved her life. Doing CPR could have forced the object deeper and tighter as an obstruction. Not trying to be harsh if what you meant to say was immediately start the ABC’s of first aid, but can’t let anyone think you jump in and start the kiss of life anytime someone seems unconscious is the right answer.

      Posted on August 6, 2012 at 6:50pm

First and foremost, as has been prescribed by AHA for many years now, a person should never perform a blind finger sweep for any reason. The only time you finger-sweep is when the object is clearly visible. Second, the heimlich should be performed as long as the person (infant/child) is concious. Once the person becomes unresponsive, CPR should begin at once in order to keep the heart beating and blood flowing throughout the body. Chest compressions will not only keep the heart beating but has a strong chance of also disloging the object.
