Say What? Allen West Wants to Stop Wasting Time Defunding Obamacare

He‘s Glenn Beck’s pick for president. He’s loved by the Tea Party. And he’s not afraid to stand up to hecklers. But what you might not know about Rep. Allen West (R-FL), he’s also bucking his party on Obamacare. For example, he just voted against defunding it.

“What?” some just cried out audibly. It’s true. West not only was one of only four Republicans to vote against a measure that week that would strip $100 million in funding for the construction of school-based health centers.

And it wasn’t a mistake, slip of the finger, or accidental oversight. According to his office, he‘s questioning the GOP’s strategy.

He “believes there are bigger funding issues to be focusing on right now including the numerous developments in the Middle East, concerning Pakistan and whether there is a link to [Osama bin Laden] and the recent unity agreement with the [Palestinian Authority] and Fatah and Hamas,” West spokeswoman Angela Sachitano told The Hill in an e-mail.

“He voted to repeal Obamacare, and it was dead on arrival in the Senate,” she added. “He questions what the goal is of chipping away like this if it’s almost certain that the Senate is not going to take it up.”

But according to The Hill, West hasn’t been completely opposed to all defunding efforts. A day before voting against defunding the school-based health centers, he did vote to strip funds from the state-based insurance exchanges created by Obamacare. The Hill says Sachitano declined to explain why he voted for one measure and not the other.

Earlier this year, West did vote to repeal the entire bill, and explained his decision in an interview:

While Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey can understand (slightly) what West is talking about, he sees a lot of problems with the Tea Party leader’s position. The biggest one? It could get him voted out of office.

“Tea Party activists warned that they would focus their ire on Republicans who got elected and then attempted to moderate their positions on ObamaCare, spending, and taxes,” Morrissey writes. “I wonder if anyone thought that one of the first they’d have to address would be Col. West?”

    West knows how to pick his battles, and when to fight them. We had two years of the Obamacare fight that froze the government out of dealing with other matters. The Dems, being the huge majority of both houses of Congress, kept their focus on that to the near-exclusion of all else. All the Pubs will get, doing the same as the Dems did, is nowhere.

    The main fight against Obamacare is in the courts. There are still two years until the thing becomes effective, so there is time. I see the main battle is for trying to win veto-proof majorities in Congress.

    We really don’t need the White House as much as we need a Congress operating under Conservative Constitutional ideals. That’s where the real power in Washington lies, as the People have chosen by the election of their representatives.

    De-funding Obamacare can come later, if needed; it’s not a cut-and-dried issue while court cases are ongoing against it. We’re not out of the woods, to be sure. But all is not lost, either.

      Well written, unfortunately Obamacare has already affected the system and has resulted in higher premiums and reduced choice of plans. The sooner this thing is derailed the lesser the damage.

      @liberalsruseless

      I agree O-care is the worst idea since giving 18-year-olds the right to vote. But the courts have it now, and we need Congress to get onto other matters. Long as Reid controls the Senate, O-care is a dead-end issue for Conservatism and the country as a whole.

      Politically, I want to see the Right winning more seats, hopefully to a veto-proof Congressional majority. Hopefully we can get a Conservative into the White House as well. We need, as citizens (or so I believe) to give swing-voters something to be for, instead of us being against things. Negativity isn’t a winning platform except among liberals. But they’ll vote for anything liberal, anyway, so they’re quite a lost cause in my book.

      For now, I’m content to let the courts handle O-care. Later, if we can win Congress in a big way, we can send O-care to the trash bin if the courts rule against us.

      Sorry, but Obamacare is a dealbreaker. Unless a member of the waiver-class, Obamacare is not two years away. It is here now, crushing people who are at the margin today, and only to get worse. It IS the top issue. Obamacare was passed as an incremental step to a single payor system and must be fought every step of the way in its’ implementation. If the future hinges on the courts and buying swing-voters, the country’s fate has already been sealed.

    There is no point in wasting time with Obamacare now when there is so much to fix. We need to get more conservatives in the senate, keep the house and elect a conservative in the Whitehouse in 2012.
    Then Obamacare can truly be a thing of the past without a lot of effort.

      By then Obamacare will be buried WAY TOO FAR into our system and virtually untouchable before it does the damage it WILL do.

      Every single day that passes right now while Obamacare spreads its roots… makes it increasingly more difficult to pry it out like the damn disease it is.

      We are in trouble if we can not get thsi done in the short term. 2012 is too late I truly believe.

      thank you for the honesty; it’s quite refreshing here. Seems like we have plenty west-bots crying the majority of the day that Glenn‘s favorite ’anti-obama‘ isn’t even going to run. If only you guys would do the research. You would come to the same conclusion I have. I’ve spent time every single night since 2007-2008 researching economics; history; self-sufficiency; and trying to figure out why the teachings of Jesus are so at odds with the so called ‘conservative christian Republicans (e.g. Santorum, welfare,warefare state)’ …. The man whose writings moved me to a real enlightment on America, liberty, economics and the war – Ron Paul. He is the only consistent one. Those who disagree with Paul need to read more of his work to better understand his position – it’s the constitution. I was stuck years ago being a big government conservative and was concerned about ending the wars, and ending the drug war… but it’s all about the rule of law, preserving our constitution and keeping the balance of power out of the executive branch; and non-intervention.

      Well, Allen West’s vote against defunding part of Obamacare was both surprizsng and puzzling until I heard more on the story. He’s right you know, it really doesn’t make sense voting against something that the Democratic controlled Senate will kill when it gets to them. But on the other hand why not vote for the defunding in order to not let the Democrats think that the GOP isn’t serious about their oposition to Obamacare.
      There are a LOT of serious issues to be considererd and voted on, but MORE SERIOUS than the take over of America’s health care by Obamacare, no I don’t think so. If Obamacare could by some miracle be overturned completely it would break the progressive socialist’s plan for socializing almost every aspect of our life in America. If it continues to be the law of the land, there‘s no limit to what the Democrats under Obama’s leadership will push through Congress and the Senate.
      I think I’ll stick with Allen West for President in 2012 until I see what he has in mind and how he hopes to acheive it. He’s the only possible GOP candidate that poses a real threat to Obama having another 4 years in the Whitehouse. All the other possible candidates are nothing more than the “same old same old ” weak rhetorical opositions we’ve seen over the past several years from the GOP.

      Okay, now this does make more sense in the light of the information given:

      Allen West voted for repeal of the Obama-care tyranny law; so in the case of partial defunding, his vote actually posts notice that, yes there are bigger issues to deal with, the defunding should also be in one full measure as well…do it all or do not do. He has his vision and eyes on the greater goal, to undo the damage done in so many areas, and make it happen.

      Go for it Mr West.

      Cain and West were held in the sidelines by God, for the people of the land cried out for change and they got what they wanted. Obama became POTUS, and is changing everything he can in this land of ours; I feel the two, Cain and West, are being brought forth to show just what God wants of us, and to work with Him to change and restore the nation for His purposes on the world.

      I can agree with West’s position. He is a man of action, and would have little use for games. Defunding Obamacare cannot take place until we have bulletproof majorities in both the Senate and House, so a vote to do so now is only symbolic. We should not reject him for this stand. I doubt if anyone here honestly believes West would not like to see Obamacare relegated to the dustbin.
      A few of my choices for the next administration:
      POTUS — Alan West
      Veep — Herman Cain
      Sec’y of State — John Bolton

So, rather than waste time and energy on something that they will not be able to get done till Obama is out of office or the SCOTUS rules it is unconstitutional, he would rather turn his attention to something that has a chance of getting fixed.

      Yes, repealing the whole thing is the ultimate and preferred goal. However, realizing the senate won’t concur to any repeal, including piecemeal defunding, does not mean you don’t do all you can to repeal any part of Obamacare. Sending a message with this vote? Perhaps the wrong one. It takes no longer to vote ‘yes’ than ‘no’ as far as I know. How is he allotting more time to more serious issues by voting ‘no’ rather than ‘yes’? I would rather hear from him than a spokesperson as to his reasoning before I chalk this up against him.

      Obviously Obamacare disproportionately benefits blacks. It‘s hard to find a black that isn’t for it. I just hope we are not being “played like a fiddle”. We’ve just had 2.5 years of a black president who said one thing and then showed us his true agenda with policies to advance his race. You don’t believe in doing your own homework? “Herman Cain, former Chairman and Member of the Board of Directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, flippantly denies the need to Audit the Federal Reserve while hosting the Neil Boortz Show on 12/29/2010…”

      Look it up, Cain is the enemy. A man, woman, black, white, whatever you can think up, all can be the enemy. If no one is willing to look into the background of candidates, the next president will without doubt continue the same policies. Watching their ads, reading their web sites, or allowing Glenn to decide your vote is not doing your homework. In all fairness I don’t know what Beck thinks of Cain. I’m in Ringgold Georgia and my town was devastated by tornados. We are just now slowing down enough to watch news instead of making it.

      BTW…yes, I get upset with Glenn Beck from time to time. I’m very much a conservative. I learn A LOT from Beck, but I get upset when he behaves like the people he reports on by telling people to shut up about the birth certificate and such. This is America and no one should tell an American to shut up because they express an opinion.

      Don’t act like blind Obama followers when watching Glenn. Research everything yourself. Use your mind not Glenns to make your decisions. Of course I believe he tells us this

      All you folks have to understand that there is no way for the Republicans to defeat Obamacare, by defunding or any other means, until they can have the numbers needed in the house and senate to override an Obama veto. To try to do it at this time using legislative methods is just an exercise in futility. They need to concentrate on spending reduction and the budget now. If they play their cards right and attain a big enough majority in both branches of the legislature in the 2012 election, it will not matter what Obama thinks or does because they will be able to override his veto. In a perfect world Obama will not be president after Jan. 20, 2013 and his vacations will then be on his dime, not ours.

      Calm down people. Colonel West is right, there are quite few of National Security and Foreign Policy issues that need to be addressed and Congress is using up valuable time on piece-meal attepts to get Obamacare repealed. While the Constitutionality of Obamacare makes it way through the courts, West dpesn’t see the sense in trying to pass bills that simply get turned down by the Senate. Our government has to deal with many things at once, Obamacare is just one of them. So until we get the Senate under control we have to rely on the Courts.

      You will see and hear a big back-lash to West on this one because all Republicans think this is the ONLY issue they can win on. So once again, THEY ALL play politics while West moves on to the people’s business. I’m on his side!

      Fools all of you…….Damn you all make me so mad! You are so quick to give this man your wife…Please Mr. West take my wife. LOL, like a bunch of children. There are so many questions I would have for this man before he would have my vote. The Hard Questions that NO ONE will ask. Yeah he is Black let’s push him to the front? Obama…..The Blacks will vote for Obama again. It would be a mistake to put a Black man up against Obama, The divide in this country is greater then ever & most are no longer interested in unity & that means Black & White………What are your views on the NAACP West? Oh wait, that is a tough one, sorry………Ha, Ha, Ha………..

      West is playing you like a fiddle.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      And for what purpose? He’s not running for POTUS.
      And, he went into a lengthy explanation for his actions in his weekly wrap up in D.C. He mankes sense, Sinista; you don’t.
      @CaptGregg ~
      If your slate of candidates for POTUS, VPOTUS, and Cabinet makes it to D.C., George Soros would foul his Depends — for at least a week!
      I don’t understand his logic, if he would have voted against defunding planned parenthood would have that been a good thing? If he would have voted against defunding abortion would have that been a good thing? I was seriously looking at him as a VP choice for Mitt Romney now I am really starting to wonder and am in a wait and see mode on him now.
      He’s still got my vote. He’s right, the bill would just die in the Senate, so wait until 2012 when they are in charge of ALL three(House, senate, White House), THEN de-fund the Obamacare obscenity. West/Cain in 2012!!! Please Allen, YOUR COUNTRY AND IT’S CITIZENS NEED YOU!!!
      Listen,
      Allen West is a STRAIGHT shooter, not slightly angled, straight!
      Furthermore, you know if Allen West made this decision I support him, because…
      I have seen him in youtube videos gettin mad at muslims, and to be honest that makes me feel good!
      So what if he doesn’t know anything about Austrian Economics, or doesn’t have a clean voting record!
      So what if he does not have a stand on our monetary policy, and simply spits talking points!
      He is a MILITARY MAN, and that is what we need!
      Besides, Beck might be a little mad at him, but he hasn’t yelled at him yet. Maybe they are still friends? AND IF GB DOESN’T DENOUNCE HIM, NEITHER WILL I!
      - Typical Beckian
      Id sure love to see Lt Col West run for President and maybe have a Michelle Bachman or Sarah Palin run as VP. Now that would make a good ole down home Tea Party Ticket. I think we need a couple of people who arent DC insiders. I live in Richmond, VA so Im pretty close to DC. I cant stand going to the place because its so liberally twisted… we need some knew blood not that same ole sh*t
      Not if he is going to keep doing this! I really like the guy, but if we can’t repeal the health care law, the least we can do is keep it unfunded so we don’t waste more money while we are trying to get rid of it. Dumb choice Allen, better get back on track!
