‘Scandalous & Outrageous’: Catholics Angry Over HHS Sec. Sebelius’ Georgetown Commencement Invite

It’s been a tough year for relations between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration. The two parties have had less-than-favorable interactions, as the former has accused the latter of restricting religious freedom and impeding churches’ ability to follow conscience. The debate has been so intense that it has exploded and slithered into media and entertainment discussion, among other sectors.
At the end of February, the focus seemed to move away from the church-state battle and toward Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke and the firestorm surrounding her spat with radio host Rush Limbaugh. At the center of all of this angst is a controversial mandate that is slated to force (although it has been slightly amended) many religious institutions to provide contraception free-of-charge to all employees.

And, alas, there’s a new associated controversy blooming — and just in time for spring. In an interesting twist of events, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius — one of the key individuals at the center of the mandate’s advancement — has been invited to speak at one of Georgetown University’s commencement events this year.
This move has angered conservative Catholics who hold her responsible for some of the drama surrounding the contraceptive mandate, which will force religious institutions (or their insurance companies) to provide contraception free-of-charge to all employees.
The selection of Sebelius is curious for a variety of reasons. To begin, Fluke’s overwhelming support for the mandate is noteworthy — and Fluke, as noted, is a student at Georgetown Law. While it could certainly be by chance that the Jesuit university has selected one of the key individuals overseeing the contraceptive mandate, the choice, considering the situation, is somewhat curious.

The HHS secretary, who, despite her more liberal views on the issues pertaining to the debate, is Catholic, is slated to address the policy institute’s graduating class on May 18. It is important to note that this ceremony is not for the general graduating class and that Sebelius will not be receiving an honorary degree — two points of contention that led to so much controversy when President Obama was invited to speak at Notre Dame back in 2009.
As Religious News Service notes, conservative Catholics are less than please with the decision to include Sebelius:
“The left-liberals who run the show at Georgetown have found a way to signal to the world that the nation’s oldest Catholic, and most famous Jesuit, university stands with the Obama administration in its war … against the Catholic bishops and others who oppose the HHS mandate as a violation of religious freedom and the rights of conscience,” fumed Robert P. George, a legal scholar at Princeton University and a conservative Catholic with close ties to Republican causes.
The conservative Cardinal Newman Society, which monitors Catholic schools for any actions it deems a danger to the faith, called the Sebelius invitation “scandalous and outrageous.” It set up a website and petition to push Georgetown President John DeGioia to rescind the invitation.
“Georgetown insults all Americans by this honor,” wrote the society’s president, Patrick J. Reilly. “The selection is especially insulting to faithful Catholics and their bishops, who are engaged in the fight for religious liberty and against abortion.” Other conservative Catholics have echoed Reilly and George on online outrage.

Screen shot from GeorgetownScandal.com, an effort by the Cardinal Newman Society
But it doesn’t appear that the university will be backing down. In a press release announcing the invitation, Georgetown praised the Obama administration member’s work in the health care sphere. And nowhere is her controversial work to instill the mandate mentioned in the brief biography that the university published:
Sebelius was sworn in as the 21st secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2009. Since taking office, she has led efforts to improve America’s health and enhance the delivery of human services to some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations, including young children, those with disabilities and the elderly. As part of the historic Affordable Care Act, she is implementing reforms she says have ended many of the insurance industry’s most discriminatory practices and will help 34 million uninsured Americans get health coverage…
While it’s possible that the university is taking a stand against the church in the battle over the contraceptive mandate, it may also simply be the case that Sebelius, a former governor (Kansas) and an accomplished federal official, is a viable choice for commencement speaker. Either way, the selection is certainly controversial — specifically among conservative Catholics who are already on edge regarding doctrinal issues and alleged unprecedented government intervention.

“. . . I will build my Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 KJV
This “type” of person is the person who wants to “cherry pick” what and when (s)he believes something and or wants to be a “cafeteria christian”! The don’t want to follow the teaching of the Church, because they don’t agree with them, or they feel CONVICTED by them or they have a misunderstanding of the purpose of the FULL TEACHING!
Remember, in John 6 which Jesus taught that His body is REAL BREAD and that His blood is REAL DRINK in the bread and the wine, He was to give us (canabalism to Jews), the passages goes on to report, “From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.” (John 6:66 KJV). As the “many” left, Jesus did not run after them to bring them back, nor did He clarify further! Rather he asked his Apostles if they believed and Peter testified that they had to, since “. . . You have the words of Eternal Life.” (v. 68b)
The Holy Catholic Church and our Lord desires everyone to HAVE THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE, but many find the teachings of the Church, “these are ‘. . . hard saying(s); who can hear it?’” to their detriment (v. 60b). It is their detriment and our loss, as we, with Jesus, love them!
Come back to TRUTH!

Have any facts to back this up? Most studies I’ve seen have shown growth in Catholic populations for the past few years and at least an equilibrium most recently. The reason for the decline in the US Catholic population several years ago was due to the sex abuse scandal. Since then the population seems to have come back and expanded.

No Sir/Madam, You are quite mistaken about this. Jesus transfers His authority to men and then works through them. Don’t believe it? Consider the following. The Jews had a priesthood and the ones that cared about their relationship with God respected them. Moses, was not asked by the people when he brought the ten commandments down from Mt. Sinai, “Where did you get your authority from to give these commandments to us?”. Or, “How do we know these commandments are from God?”. Jesus founded The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church upon St. Peter and it is responsible for the spread of the whole truth of Christianity throughout the world. The office of the priesthood was established at the time of the church. To *know* history is to be Catholic. Some things that we would not have without The Catholic Church are: The Bible, Western Civilization, The Scientific Method, and many many inventions. God is love, and will forgive any sin but frankly Protestantism is living dangerously. God does absolutely and utterly amazing things through His church and many are literally blind to it. I strongly suggest not to dishonor the Pope. It is a sacrilege to do so. This is coming from a Jew who became a Catholic 14 years ago.

Wow! I don‘t even know where to begin with what you’re sayin. Lets just agree to disagree.
In the 1500′s William Tyndale sought to translate the Bible into the language of the common people, English. He could not gain approval from the Catholic institution, so he worked as an outlaw on the run in Europe, translating the Bible. He was eventually captured, condemned and executed in 1536. It is because of people like these men, Tyndale and Wycliffe, that we have the scriptures today. If the Catholic religion had its way, we’d still be in ignorance about the Bible and enslaved to the pope.
We could argue this till Kingdom come…jus trust follow God thru Jesus. Do His commandments and forget about the Cathedrals. I say it in love-peace.

Jesus says that He is truth. Love by the way is not affirming what is incorrect just because someone claims they are Christian. It is love to fraternally correct other souls to understand the boundaries of this because their salvation is in accepting the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth in so far as we can understand. Jesus is also The Word Incarnate. Do you think that He needs the scriptures to communicate to men? Have Bibles just drop down from heaven? Is all of Christian belief founded upon The Bible(Maritin Luther started that – but who is he to say this?). Do The writings of actual Saints count for anything? Can a book ever be a *sole* source of authority? Can the Constitution of the United States stand alone without an authoritative body to interpret it? And what authoritative body is there to resolve disputes between opposing interpretations of the laws written within it? Which one of the 33,000+ bible believing denominational / non-denominational interpretations should we accept? Please give more credit to your Lord and Savior. He left us with rich traditions, that are extremely efficacious for souls. What happened to obedience of spiritual authority? Remember the angels that were cast out from heaven did not want to be the servants of man. There is no heresy that has not been addressed by The Catholics. See the story of Tyndale and English translations of scripture: http://archive.catholic.com/thisrock/2002/0212fea3.asp.
