Scarborough Laments New Media Outlets That Claim ‘Glenn Beck & Sarah Palin Are Persecuted’

Recently, MSNBC morning show host Joe Scarborough gave a candid assessment of his take on the pitfalls of new media.
In a video posted by Accuracy in Media and described by the group as a private “town hall” event in Charleston, South Carolina, the “Morning Joe” host assessed the contemporary media landscape. Aside from lamenting the negative influence he believes modern forms of news and communication are having on the electorate, Scarborough went on to mention Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin as being continuously portrayed as faux victims by various outlets.
As you know, new media outlets, like The Blaze, the Huffington Post and Politico, exist online and, as technologies have progressed, these outlets have grown exponentially in popularity. But for Scarborough, new media outlets are a major barrier to rational debate, as he said during the event that they’ve done “more than anything else to stop compromise in Washington, D.C.”
“I think the biggest problem right now has to do with new media — and I’ll just say that. We’re in a transition,” Scarborough explained. “I wasn’t a big fan of when we just had three networks…sort of a voice of God…and three networks, the New York Times and the Washington Post. They decided what the narrative was and they shoved it down our throats,” he continued.
Here’s where he really delved deeply into the current dilemma he sees with media:
“I think the bigger problem now with new media is that people can select what they want to hear at all times and go searching for a media outlet that conforms with their ideology 100 percent, so they wake up in the morning and they turn on a news channel — a cable channel — that repeats everything they believe and doesn’t question any pre-existing prejudices.”
The phenomenon he’s speaking about here is selective exposure — the notion that individuals expose themselves only to the information that meets their pre-existing views. While this may hold truth to some degree, there is a irony here, as MSNBC, the network Scarborough works for, would qualify as one of the “news channels” he’s targeting. Of course, he wasn’t done describing his qualms, as he continued to delve into the problems he sees with selective exposure.
“And then, if they’re like my mother, they will, at night, just sort of surf the web — for her it’s right-wing web sites that say that poor Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are persecuted and that Joe Scarborough’s a socialist,” he continued.
Watch his comments, below:
The Blaze does not yet have a full version of his address, but based on these comments, Scarborough seems to have some major issues surrounding the way in which news is consumed. In terms of Scarborough being dubbed a “socialist,” we’re not sure who, exactly, he’s referring to.
This isn’t the first time that Scarborough has mentioned Beck. Back in February 2011, Scarborough said, “[Beck's] bad for the Republican party. He’s bad for Fox News. It’s that simple,” referring specifically to Beck’s work to uncover the socialists, progressives, and unions behind the unrest in Egypt and Wisconsin.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 2:28amWhile It is obvious that the liberal media is biased it is no less true that so called “new media” also carries bias (most of it). What he was saying about people picking a news source that meets their ideology is true. When that news source inevitably lies, omits, or stretches the truth the consumer of that media is duped because they don’t question their favorite sources.
I think this is equally a failing of ourselves as it is a failing of the media, and shame on us for not doing our own homework. It’s easy to attack the liberal media because their bias is so obvious to us. The bias that plays to our own ideologies and fears is much harder to admit.

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 4:09pmI actually see his point here. The reality is that the internet and demographic focused cable channels have enabled us as consumers to watch and/or listen to exactly what we want to here. Over time this reinforces are perceptions. However, I would argue that the left is the party of anger and lies. As a conservative, I have no problem debating another person’s viewpoint, but what I see only too often is bitter resentment. The left has MSNBC, NPR, and pretty much all the main stream media outlets to get their information. The right has FOX, GBTV, and most of talk radio. My point here is that I agree with Joe about the divide being caused with new media, but I would argue that it is more divisive on the left than it is on the right.

Why would you assume that the big three TV networks as well as the NYT and WaPost ever gave you any real diversity in opinion? One could easily postulate that these entities provided as much objectivity 30 years ago as they do today. Basically, they’ve always promoted a center-left agenda and only the emergence of new media was able to break apart this group-think monopoly.

The truth is never the first priority when it comes to news. It is all about spin. And, we’re getting better at recognizing spin. We’re more jaded. Who watches a commercial and believes it at face value? Who watches a news report on politics and believes it at face value?
Sadly, mis-information/partial facts are the standard around the globe. I watched a BBC story on pollution in Beijing. The conclusion was that China‘s pollution is a result of the USA’s consumerism. Right.
The MSM could remove of the appeal of Fox or GBTV if they would play both sides of the fence. They won’t. It is ‘sexier’ to spin the stories. They have an agenda. Unfortunately, when they begin to fail, they‘ll be determined to be ’too big to fail.’ Then, we will officially have state-sponsored media… and as a result, the end of alternative news sources.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 1:31pm@ We are Americans_ I have no objection to vetting candidates. You have quite a selective memory. Bush had a DUI conviction in his twenties. Do you remember the anal exam he endured when that was discovered? Obama, by his own admission, used cocaine in his twenties, no exam. Palin had a downs syndrome child who the media speculated was actually her daughters baby. How is that vetting? She was also vilified for outsourcing her maternal obligations to others. Not a peep from feminist groups. And the outrage over her the price of her wardrobe was truly mind boggling. Michelle Obama has a wardrobe that would rival that of royalty, not a word! Dan Quayle was ridiculed mercilessly for misspelling potato, to this day he is characterized as an idiot. Obama is commander in chief and doesn’t know the proper pronunciation of the word CORPSMAN! The MSN never even mentioned it! You argue we’ve heard the negative stories about liberals, yes we have. Not through the MSM, but through alternative sources. But for FOX, talk radio and honest internet sites, we would all be in the dark. The point being, the news and the way it’s presented is no longer the sole property of the leftist spin machine. And they are NOT happy about losing their ability to shape opinions as they once could.
