Scarborough on Gingrich: ‘Newt…Thought I Was Too Conservative for My District’

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich
GOP presidential contender Newt Gingrich stunned some politicos when he churned out a win in South Carolina on Saturday.
(Related: Ann Coulter tears into Newt as “least electable”)
Of course, following his victory, the former House Speaker found himself the subject of discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” today. But Gingrich, who continues to tout what he sees as a staunchly conservative record, may not be very happy with what host Joe Scarborough had to say about him.
Mediaite has more:
On Monday morning, Morning Joe‘s Mika Brzezinski reported that South Carolina’s GOP exit poll has primary winner Newt Gingrich ranking highest in electability, with 51 percent of the vote versus Mitt Romney‘s 37. And as the candidates look ahead to Florida, Romney is launching an offensive, labeling the former Speaker a “failed leader.”
Host Joe Scarborough responded, characterizing Gingrich as a “mixed bag” and drawing back on his own experiences working with (or, as it happened, against) him.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough
According to these same exit polls, among those calling themselves “very conservative” in South Carolina, 48 percent voted for Gingrich, with only 19 percent choosing Romney. Clearly, Gingrich fared better among more ardent proponents of conservative values than did his fellow contender.
When it came to weighing in on Gingrich’s past record, though, Scarborough had some noteworthy comments to share outside of simply dubbing Gingrich as someone who has had both successes and failures in his leadership. He said:
“Listen, Newt was a mixed bag. He’s always a mixed bag. You look at what he did getting up to actually becoming speaker and he was a great revolutionary out in the field. Newt Gingrich was able organize and put together a winning team. And Republicans took control of the House for the first time in a generation.
I mean, I didn’t even believe — I remember the results were coming in and we were talking about this before. And somebody shouted when I won — I wasn’t supposed to win. Of course, just for the record, Newt was working against me the whole time. He thought I was too conservative for my district. Nice call, Newt.“
Scarborough went on to say that Gingrich working against him actually helped him capture the majority of voters in his district.
Watch this dialogue, below (Gingrich commentary starts around 2:30):
In December, Scarborough made some other noteworthy comments about Gingrich, calling him an “extremist.” He said:
“I have to step in here as a consistent, small-government conservative and say Newt Gingrich is extreme, but just read a George Will column and find out he’s not an extreme conservative,” Scarborough said. “He is an extreme ‘Newtist.’ Whatever Newt is thinking that day, he will take to the extremes. The New York Times this morning talking about his extreme vision of a doomsday scenario involving nuclear weapons that experts say isn’t really going to happen. Newt is an extremist, but as George Will said, he would’ve made a marvelous Marxist.”
You can read the Will column he referenced here.

I am and always have been voting for RON PAUL, even though I am a Mormon. However, it is very obvious to any rational thinking person that what happened in South Carolina was a result of what the pastors all decided to do.
Romney’s vote count remained about the same in the process, but Santorum and Perry’s voters decided to vote for Gingrinch instead. Romney didn’t lose any votes there, he never had those votes for obvious reasons. Yes, he is human. He’s made mistakes, but he would cut Obummer to shreds in a debate. I recently read ‘The Pact: Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and the Rivalry That Defined a Generation.’ This book helped clarify the rumors and untruths flying. Nobody is perfect. That said, I feel Newt is the best suited out of the Republican candidates. He doesn’t embody all a tea party conservative like myself would like to see, but we must pick out of the crowd we have. ‘Mitt’ Willard Romney gives me the willies. Posted on January 23, 2012 at 12:06pmOh my God, this is clear evidence that the establishment is running scared of Newt! Consider the sources here. First of all, Romney is turning up the heat because he’s beginning to feel his overconfidence being torn to shreds. He also knows that his money will not BUY the election as he had anticipated, so he is making unfounded attacks against Newt. To call him a failure and a fraud is utterly laughable, considering his political career has been characterized by misleading and deceptive lies, half-truths and flip-flops. For all the errors that Newt has made, he certainly has not descended to such depths.
Furthermore, to employ these hirelings from MSNBC, such as Joe Scarborough and his sidekick, it is clearly a sign of utter desperation. Since when has Scarborough been a beacon of conservative values? Morning Joe, the Turncoat, has absolutely NO CREDIBILITY in the conservative camp so, again, consider the source. IRRELEVANT!
These people are wasting their money if they think it’s going to make a difference. The spin and hyperbole in their rhetoric is becoming more transparent. American’s are not stupid! We are able to see through it all, so why doesn’t Romney just stick to the issues and define exactly where he stands. Believe me, we do not want another John McCain to be our candidate. If you can only rewind for a minute. Had not Sarah Palin entered the race as a “conservative” VP, Obama would have swept the floor with McCain. That’s a fact!

The one thing I really liked from Newt was when he said on election night that he was going to show the comparison between ALINSKY beliefs of the Obama Admin. and ours – which would be more than fantastic b/c he would be the best to do that in an articulate way on a national scale since he has that platform now. It would bring that knowledge to a lot more people who are still clueless about what’s going on with Obama & Co….even other liberals/Progressives. Also concentrate on getting Tea Party people in the SENATE, as well as the House. It’s not only the President — and if we get a “moderate” in there, if we have the Congress, they’ll keep him in check.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:59amThose who say Newt’s sins are forgiven because he became Catholic should think again:
First, until the Democratic Party became Pro-Choice, Catholics were overwhelming Democrats. Historically, there were few Conservative Catholics, that has of course started to change. Even today, must Catholics are really Blue Dog Democrats even thought they may say they are republican.
Second, the Catholic churches stance on illegal immigration runs against GOP orthodoxy, In fact many Catholic Nuns supported Barrack Obama in 08.
Third, the Church has actively suggested that the United States bail out Europe, and ironically the Church supports the International Monetary Fund.
Fourth, Catholics do not generally discuss political matters at Mass or in Church. Generally, Catholics will only get involved in politics at the personal level.
Fifth, If you don’t agree with the Church you are not really Catholic. The Catholic Church does not let you pick and choose matters of faith. You cannot say that the Pope is wrong or I don’t agree with this, or that goes to far.
Catholics on average do not seem to be as concerned with Israel or biblical prophecy as Christians.

You know, I’ve been wondering the same thing. These Washington elitists should be careful slamming Newt because they just may end up reporting to him. Wouldn’t want to be in their shoes then.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:39amPut the ideology of Paul, with the speaking and explaining of Newt and the professional look of Romney and you have a candidate that would destroy Obama.
But, instead we have candidates that all have major flaws that diminish their chances of beating someone like Obama. Santorum is not the answer either, as he has significant big government leanings, questionable ethics regarding legislation for donors, and a promotion of social conservatism that would not fly for half the country, especially when people are looking for economic centered platforms, not socially centered platforms.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:35amIts absolutely amazing how many people are being fooled by Newt.
He is not a good debater, he simply throws out “bumper-sticker” lines with a degrading tone. He only uses emotion rather than facts and logic. This is the same playbook democrats use.
Forgiven or not, Newts life legacy is a mockery to the sanctity of marriage. One of the consequences of living a life like he has, is to lose the right to lead the party of family values. His example will be used by those who seek to destroy the importance of marriage as a tool to further their agenda.

They can’t look past the end of their nose when it comes to winning the general election.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 12:02pmHe invokes emotional responses and unfortunately, too many people make decisions based upon emotion, not logic. He riled everyone up into almost a mob frenzy when he attacks the media. Obama is also a master manipulator of emotion. So, when he says he can go toe-to-toe, he is right. They both use the same deceptive and manipulative tactics to get votes. Emotional response often results in rash decisions and regret.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 12:27pmAnn Couter is so FAKE. She supports that Progressive Blue Dog Democrat Chris Christie who believes in Global warming and REFUSED to allow his state to sue/join in AGAINST ObamaCARE with the rest of the states in court.
And she now supports a PROGRESSIVE RINO named Romney.
AFTER Romney LOST IOWA but while he was still ahead of the polls (Before South Carollina) Coulter and Gretchen Carlson, Brian Kilmead, Megan Kelly, Bolling, etc were ALL FRANTICALLY PUMPING UP ROMNEY‘s POLLs by saying NOW that Iowa didn’t matter and that he will win in South Carolina ..and that South Carolina since 1980 ALWAYS determined who was going to be the Republican nominee.
YET, when Romney LOST South Carolina, not only did Fox News FOLD UP THAT DEBATE QUICKLY so GIngrich would not get more credit (You had to go to CNNr)
But ALL the Fox Anchors and Fox political commenteers (who are ALL BUSH LOVERS/Perino, Rove/Krauthammer, Coulter, etc.) said NOW that Newt Gingrich won South Carolina that S. C did NOT determine who the republican candidate would be.
Ann Coulter said AFTER the S Carolina debate that “S C. went back to its DEMOCRAT ROOTS” because they DARED NOT vote for Fox anchor/commenters’ buddy – MITT ROMNEY.
All FOX news talked about AFTER Romney Lost S. C, was that Romney would do better in Florida. ……….. Not that SANTORUM would do better in Florida – ——————-Only ROMNEY
Fox News anchor and poltical commetators are so in the tank for

Obama is the worst POTUS, we all know that, but Newt is seen as a corrupt DC establishment hack and won’t win a single state against Obama. The guy is a joke, and a liberal to boot. Posted on January 23, 2012 at 11:44amIt’s not about who is the best at a debate. It’s about if you can actually say what you mean and mean what you say, and doing what you really believe in. Newt does not, and will not do that. It’s like playing a sport on a video game and being good at it, but when it comes down to atually playing the sport, you suck.
