Scenes From The National Action Network Annual Convention: National Black Anthem, ‘We Have a Race Problem & No One Wants to Talk About It’

The National Action Network, a civil rights organization founded by Rev. Al Sharpton in 1991, began its annual convention last Wednesday with an address from Attorney General Eric Holder.

“Each April, this convention provides an important opportunity — not only to observe the anniversary of Dr. King’s tragic death, and to reflect upon the lessons of his extraordinary life — but also to consider where we are, as a nation; to examine our values and priorities; to take stock of our progress; and to take responsibility for the work that remains before us,” Holder said.

He continued:

Only when it is dark enough, Dr. King said, can you see the stars. Well today once again, it is dark enough.
…
[I’m] optimistic about the path that we are on…many obstacles lay before us, and there are dark skies overhead, but if history is any guide and I believe that it is, positive change is frequently the consequence of unfavorable, not favorable circumstance, progress is often the product of darkness, not the light.

The Attorney General wasn’t the only official from the Obama administration to attend the conference. Other major speakers included Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis (as covered by The Blaze), Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, to name just a few.

Among the topics discussed during the four-day convention were economic disparity, D.C. statehood, social justice/injustice, “How the church can be utilized to re-elect President Obama,” and the Trayvon Martin shooting.

The following video, taken last Wednesday and produced by Jeremy Segal, is a collection of responses from conference attendees who were interviewed on the subject of “Justice for Trayvon”:

“If fifteen of these young men in this building walked out on the street and stood by the White House for 20 minutes — just stood there — somebody would call the cops just because of their color and that’s the problem. We have a race problem and no one wants to talk about it but that’s the real deal here,” one attendee said.

“I think if there were a verdict of innocent,” one attendee, a lawyer, said in reference to George Zimmerman, “I think it would say something about the justice system in the state of Florida and the state of Florida has some problems for a whole lot of different reasons but I couldn’t really speculate on that until really all of the evidence has been presented in the trial.”

“Justice for me,” another attendee said, “would be would be served with a conviction. He [Zimmerman] has made awful choices and he made awful choices on that day. Should he be punished for it? He most certainly should.”

Another attendee said: “I will say that I can’t answer that fully unless I hear the evidence in the case. Without the trial having happened, how I would feel at that the verdict would be premature.”

The next day, the conference started with the singing of “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing,” more commonly known as “The National Black Anthem”:

The National Anthem was not sung.

Later that day, while participating in a panel discussion on “The Church: Becoming Spiritually Fed & Feeding the Hungry,” the Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III had this to say:

…when you talking about what’s going down with [Rep. Paul] Ryan’s budget, it’s because for 40 years the right-wing has successfully marketed the poor people as political piñatas. They make them negative. And so, as the political piñatas, it’s okay to beat up on poor folk.

But why don’t we take that back? Because…Paul Ryan better know, if he’s going to make it into heaven, he’s got to have at least one poor person as a reference on his résumé…

    Any black person who does not call out the obvious race baiting and civil unrest caused by the NBPP in the Trayvon Martin case has NO credibility. This reminds me so much of the “ moderate ” Muslims today who do not speak out about the suicidal killers in their religion. People of peace must stand together, but apparently today the people of evil are in control. And these evil people are using race , politics, and religion to cause what they were created to create : destruction. All wrapped up in a package of ” social justice.”

      i agree completely with this. Now consider the fact that like the Muslims you would be lucky to get even 10% of the black population to speak out against the radicals that claim to speak for their race. really, you would be lucky to get even 1 in 10 to simply give Zimmerman the benefit of being innocent until proven guilty. What does this really say about the state of race relations in America and does it really offer any hope of improving?

One doesn’t “make it into heaven”with a resume, of because respects one man over another. He “makes it” because he accepts the shed blood of Jesus Christ as atonement for his sins and invites Christ into his heart and asks forgiveness. All who do so will be saved and thus “make it into heaven”.

      The kind of damage these “reverends” are doing is not only severe and unnecessary, but is blasphemous besides. There’s a commandment that says “thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain”. That doesn’t just mean cussing,. It means attaching His name to something he never said or misrepresenting His word, which is a representation of Himself according to John 1: “1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… 14And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. ” If twisting the Word and lying about it to advance a political agenda isn’t misrepresenting God, I don’t know what is. Methinks it is not Mr.Ryan the good Reverend ought to be worried about “making it” into heaven, but rather ought to perhaps consult a mirror.

      -Google search “civil wars in the world” then research each individual civil war and you will find one common combatant in 90% of them: Muslim extremists.       We do have a race problem no ones talking about. a race that makes up 15 %-18% of the population is committing 65% of the violent crimes,using 48% of al the entitlement programs, and 40% of the entire federal work force.
      Basicly that race is burdening the system through increase taxes needed to catch,trial,and imprison them.
      Burden the system through abuse and over use of entitlement programs.
      .And burden the tax payers by filling useless positions that feed on tax dollars.
      That just the cost problem this race causes.
      If we look into the racism that this races civic leaders fuels.the legalized hate groups and race pimpers in this race. And the devastation this race has had on the quality of our public and college educational systems.
      We could literally go on and on .
      The reason no one talks about is because you can’t without being called a racist.
      Call me a racist DON‘T CARE If seeing things from as they actually are is racist then I’m guilty.
      BUT
      YEAH WE HAVE A RACE PROBLEM.

      So if the population of blacks in America is 17% and 80% population of blacks are in our occupying our jail system when do they start taking responsibility for their actions??     These people want to know why there is a race problem? THIS IS IT. They insist in stirring a fire that could have gone out a long time ago. If their generation of Blacks had insisted on good schools instead of just letting their political leaders give lip service to the problems, they could look proudly at a generation of young Black people ready for the work force and the modern world we live in. They created the culture they live in, they can’t blame me.

      It’s the story of how the teachers union has destroyed the American Dream.

      Class mobility, the ability to move up IS the american dream and inner city schools kill that dream by not teaching the children.

      The narrator is a black man, Geoffrey Canada, who grew up in the ghetto and decided to start a charter school to save children from the failure factories of the public schools. But the unions have blocked any and every change possible to help the children.

      We know the problem. We know the solution. Get rid of the teacher unions and let people who care clean up these failed schools.

      The politicians say it’s about the children — No it’s about the unions.

      Watch the movie, it’s short and you will see the despair. Young parents know their children have no way out and it is killing them to watch their kids fall in to this union enforced failure pit.

      Hear this, only people of colour can be racist. It does sound bizarr. Growing up , we were taught “if you’re black-stay back, if you’re brown, hang around, if you’re white , you’re alright, if you’re yellow, you’re my kind of fellow (male or female). White people can be “bigots”, predjudiced, etc. but not racist that has always been reserved for us now it has been changed. THE N—– word was a word used by us as a loving word or a loathsome word but it was our word. Study your history or better yet ask mom or dad if need be ask grand dad and grand ma.

    Let’s make sure that all these churches involved lose their tax-exempt status for political activity. If a white Christian church spoke out about the government, the IRS would be all over them like stink on sh*t. And our national race problem is that these blacks think they deserve special consideration just because of their race. Affirmative action isn’t enough, nothing short of putting the white race “in its place” is enough for these people.

    When the KKK and the Aryan Nation and other white supremacist groups start making their come-back, thank Sharpton, Jackson and the NBPP. I do believe that they actually want a race war, because they have brothers in the president and AG.

      I agree .. and they see that this may be their last summer with the White House and DOJ .. AG and all … they are racheting up daily .. Today in Tampa they had a “meeting” about “Standing your ground law” .. in a black church (they want it ended now .. because “whites are killing blacks” they fail to mention that when a white kills a black it is usually to stop being murdered, robbed or raped) .. I agree they should lose their tax exempt status … I am sick and tired of the double standard .. they are using Tampa (even though the killing was outside Orlando and the kid was from the Miami area) because the Republican Convention is there in August .. they are trying to get Republican volunteers to work it .. I am south of there and wouldn’t go near Tampa that week (or this summer) for all the money in the world.

      Uh, I got some serious questions about churches that believe one brings a resume to Judgement Day. (Works based righteousness?) I’ve also got some questions about ordained ministers who believe they know EVERYTHING about anyone else. (omniscience, anyone?) And I have questions about ministers who feel they are qualified to judge what criteria is on this supposed resume.

      The only person who is qualified to determine who is admitted into Heaven is God the Father. And no matter who one has on the reference section of the resume, only one name counts – Jesus Christ, Savior and Lord. The rest is just wood, hay and stubble.

I remember when dr King was killed, many black leaders brought that exact thing up and the media covered it for a few days, but quickly buried it. The media also won’t tell you about how dr King did not like al sharpton…and indeed had him removed from several meetings because of his hateful attitude. Now, this racist ass pretends he was dr Kings best friend…sickening.

      I’ve been waiting for someone to say it! I wrote a post yesterday but didn’t send. Holder says we’re cowards for not discussing the race issues in this country. Okay! We have a serious black crime problem in America. The prisons are full to bursting because a subset of the 13% black population commits most of the crime, and the so-called black leadership would rather blame whites then try to come up with a solution. I wonder if there is one. Blacks have access to education. They have equal access to jobs, military service, and the voting booth. (Unless they’re too stupid to get a $15.00 I.D. Card.) We’ve been throwing money at the innercities and minorities for decades. Still, black crime is out of control. So is there something we haven’t done (besides burning white babies at the stake in the middle of a south central L.A. St) that will fix this. Or, are we destined to keep living in fear because it’s a cultural or biological thing. Blacks are naturally more inclined to commit murder, rape and robbery?

Hell you have smeared the great names of our righteous founders. Thomas Jefferson did not even father a child by a slave girl. There is still slavery in Africa. We see your sincerity by the way you do nothing about it. We outlawed slavery 150 years ago and in current times many nations have only recently outlawed it. God get a grip.
