Jeremy Stoppel is man enough to admit that he deserved getting a ticket for squealing his tires in the school parking ticket. But he has a problem with the order that came down from school security — no more American Flags. He told KMGH-TV:
“She said I should take my flags down. She said this is a school that focuses on diversity and she doesn’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable,” Stoppel said. “How do you suppose anyone would feel uncomfortable in America with an American flag? That‘s where I’m confused.”
Jeremy and his dad told the station they are looking for an apology:
“To me, she’s just threatening him, hoping that she can just bully him so he‘ll just take ’em down and just put his tail between his legs and say, ‘I’m done. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.‘ And that’s just not gonna happen,” said Dan Stoppel, Jeremy’s father.
The principal is promising to look into the matter. Stay tuned.

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 12:49amPatriotism is a great virtue but I don‘t think flags suffice to prove you’re a patriot and we will be in grave danger when external symbols of patriotism become more important than forming objective opinions about your country and its policies. That’s the patriotism that the founders wanted for this country based on enlightenment principles.
Patriotism is far dangerous when it becomes nationalism that hides a feeling of supremacy for the people of this country over every other human being for some inane reason. Exactly what I see expressed over and over in these comments.

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 7:01amOh I’m not for stopping you doing anything. I’m mostly a libertarian and I respect my constitution despite everybody trying to label me liberal to avoid the debate.
But the smug attitude of ‘greatest country ever conceived’ that guys like Sean Hannity keeps repeating not only goes against the christian principles of humility but also makes people here feel their country superior to any other. And history can teach you what happens when a country goes too much down that path: Pharaons, Romans, Napolean French, Nazi germany, and Japan pre WW2.
The sooner we learn humility and drop our superior attitude the better we get our country on the right track to be truly great.

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 11:37amRush, you speak with an elegant pen sir and with enough libertarian jargon to cloak a progressive ideology IF you were one. I will not presume either yet. What is clear, you are not a moron. This post of yours above has enough half truths in it to gain my approval… IF I didn’t firmly understand where my principles sprout from.
“EXTERNAL symbols of patriotism become more important than forming OBJECTIVE opinions about YOUR COUNTRY and its POLICIES… That’s the patriotism the founders wanted… based on ‘Enlightenment Principles’.”
There is nothing inherently wrong with patriotic symbols, especially those that remind us of OUR ‘enlightenment principles’ and the grave price paid for those beliefs. But your use of ‘objective’ opinions, while speaking in the context of one’s country and policies, seems to imply only Foreign opinion possesses objective perspective. I would categorically reject such a notion that a Patriot, wrapped provocatively in a plethora of patriotic symbols, could not form ‘objective’ opinions… ESPECIALLY about our country’s policies!
“Patriotism is far dangerous when it becomes nationalism that hides a feeling of supremacy for the people of this country over every other human being for some inane reason. Exactly what I see expressed over and over in these comments.”
It‘s your second paragraph where I get a better feel for what you really mean by ’Enlightenment Principles.’ You assert, when a Patriot rightly recognizes the uniqueness of these United States and the extraordinary righteous accomplishments never before seen in human history, that we Patriots will forget the providence behind those moral ends and assert the credit belongs onto ourselves. That we, not Him, made this nation the miracle that it is. Such recognition does NOT lead to the dreaded Nationalism of which you fear sir, nor to hubris. Such recognition Honors the One that provided it.
History shows it is the various forms of a ‘ruling class’ that twists peoples’ pride, who are not firmly rooted in the Truth of the source of Righteous Providence, into racial supremacy over other groups. Those ‘would be rulers’ that would take credit are the ‘dangerous patriots’ you should be vigilant about. I do not see such assertions being expressed here. So Rush, I am deeply offended that your assertion otherwise implies we’re all racists and demand an apology sir.

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 2:39pmHONORANDOBEY,
On “objective opinions”: I‘m in totally agreement with you that being a patriot doesn’t mean you can’t be objective about your country. After all, MLK, Noam Chomsky or Jane Fonda are all patriots in my mind, and dared to express their opinions while loving their country nonetheless.
I was referring to the dogma that says if you’re a patriot of this great country, then you should put american exceptionalism above anything else. As I mentioned, Sean Hannity, but also Glenn and Rush and other on the right paint any criticism or lack of “flags” and ‘banners“ and ”pins” as unpatriotic (that’s why all our news channels compete on who uses more flags than the other), which is utterly stupid.
On racism: I don’t think I labelled anybody as racist. I was talking about “race” superiority, but “identity” superiority. For example, all the people opposed to the international criminal courts, think that “Americans” should not be held accountable to any human standards of law. The same rules we like here (nobody is above the law) we consider inappropriate when people from other countries are involved.
And when I referred to “comments”, here’s an example just few entries above this one: “Diversity DOES NOT MEAN SHOVING OTHER “LESSER” COUNTRIES DOWN OUR EXCEPTIONAL THROATS!!!”
Do you see what I mean? “Lesser” countries? really?

It should be obvious (and it is to other patriots) that the symbols we display not only show our devotion to the principals and ideals that they represent, They serve as reminders for those that are the benefactors, of those that have paid the price for our freedom, that they are the luckiest people on the planet. Please don’t mix liberals with communism, you’re just making your arguments instantly weak by those egregious statements. And i’m not even a liberal, I don’t need to defend them. Please “beat” me with SENSE and LOGIC.
As for diversity, I just have to point to the declaration of independence:
- All men are equal
- They all have unalienable rights, of which are: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
You can think whatever you want, do whatever you like to pursue your happiness as long as it’s legal and does not conflict with my pursuit of happiness and does not harm me. The bill of rights obviously more specifically lays out those rights and liberties.
I can’t tell you whether you should believe in god, bear arms, start a militia (christian or muslim or jewish btw), smoke marijuana, abort your pregnancy, commit suicide, speak your native tongue, or anything else.
Diversity is the respect of others’ differences and their right to be, think and act differently. It’s in the essence of the founding of this country.

But your insistence on minimizing people’s comments is starting to get annoying. This wasn’t a parking lot security guard that did this, it was the principal of the school, who holds a significant amount of authority with respect to what goes on in the school (which many abuse). I am always amazed when someone like you tries to play down encroachments on freedom (ah, it’s just this, or it’s just that, what difference does it make?) until something happens that takes away something that you like and have a right to do. Incrementalism is how all of this is done. Nobody would dare ban free speech all at once, but if they can do it little by little, with cases like this, or speech codes, or laws agains so-called “hate speech,” they can achieve their goals without people noticing or caring until it’s too late.

Posted on September 5, 2010 at 7:18pmJeremy should paint his car/ truck as an american flag! I would cover my car in american flags, I would buy an american flag shirt and wear it everyday! And the first moron that said they were offend by it I would toss them in my american flag car drive them to the airport and ship them off with a one way ticket to cuba or North Korea! I say we all mail a picture of the american flag to this wonderful patriot of a principal at Jeremy’s school. maybe she’ll be offended right out to the airport for a flight to north korea.

Posted on September 5, 2010 at 7:36pmSounds to me like the boy should install a 25’ pole extender in the back of his 4×4. When he arrives for school, the tall poll and flag go up, and when he leaves, down they come. He could probably even make it telescopic and or foldable, that would be tall and safe.
Personally, I find that cars with Colorado license plates on school ground represent HATE speech and are disruptive to the learning environment.

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 2:28amI live in Colorado and work in a school district as a teacher in New Mexico. I have flown an American flag for two years from my car and have NEVER had this problem, along with stickers and in BIG BOLD red letters the words FREEDOM ROCKS across the back of my car. This is an isolated incident of someone trying to pick on a kid and would not be surprised if there is more to this than what we are told on both sides. I actually got pulled over one time, but that was for a red sticker across the windshield that was illegal (and I failed to check the law before putting it on my car).

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 11:01amHe should sue the Guard ,for trying to violate his civil rights.
We know, whats going on here, we’ve been living under Liberal law. They always bring up Diversity, thats code for do it our way….!!! We need an organization to fight for the American people.
The ACLU says it fights for civil rights..but they only do that if your black, sorry to say that! But it’s true. They don’t think, if your white you can have your civil rights violated. It’s time to form an Organization that will help US CITIZENS with issues, like this one!
Or when someone says, take down your cross or, God Bless America Sign. We need an Organization to help us fight back…

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 11:49amGnomechomsky, you should look at it this way. It might be mandatory to fly the communist regime’s flag in a communist country, but they would also certainly outlaw the flying of the flag of a previous government. That’s what they are really trying to move us towards today, make us feel ashamed to display the flag, make us lose our pride in our Nation, and try to demonize any who would defy them. Fortunately for all of us, it really is back firing on them.

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 12:46pmWe should all be flying our flags, especially this weekend. It seems many Americans have become ashamed of our flag and our country. Sure, we’re not perfect, but where else can the world go to find freedom?

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 1:27pmThat is why they are called government schools. This is where they are misleading your children and it has been going on since the 70′s as I had to deal with it when my son was in school. I can only figure it has gotten much worse.
Home school your kids if you want them to learn the truth and not be twisted into the government school mold. The marxist mold.

Posted on September 6, 2010 at 3:11pmGNOMECHOMPSKY…..I said is like to see it…not require it or make it a law! Wishing for people to have pride and want to display a symbol of patriotism shouldn’t be compared to communist ideology. I’m not sure how you even concluded an analogy from the statement, but I will agree with you. if you were required to display a flag, regardless of its origin, that would be wrong.

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 8:16amI hope this student tells the school to go to hell, and continues to fly the flag proudly. We all MUST start to stand up individually and collectively to all the PC garbage shoved down our throats. The hypocrisy is nauseating- their own perverted definition of “diversity” supposedly supports ALL points of view, all opinions, all beliefs-so how come when we want to celebrate traditional American beliefs and values, we are it may “offend” someone. We have to stop being afraid of “offending” someone. Some people need to be offended.

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 5:02pmGreetings,
I am a college student and have witnessed first hand communism ideals in a community college from all levels of the organization. It is amazing to me that most of our “Higher Educational” institutions feel free to teach their students about anything but AMERICA… Students are forced to read what the college administrators want and most of the time the reading is laced with Marxist ideas. The irony is that in order to get a good grade the students have to comply and fall in line with their indoctrination. Why is this?
Thank you for your time,
A concerned American

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 6:27pmIf the flag is a visual hazard, it should be removed for safety. That has nothing to do with politics. Safety, after all, is far more important than making a political statement.

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 6:03pmUnless Colorado’s motor vehicle laws do not permit the kid to have those flags on the rear of his vehicle that guard had no business telling him to have them removed. If this guard is in charge of security the school board needs to hire someone else who knows Colorado laws.
