Schwarzenegger: ‘No One Cares If You Smoke a Joint or Not’

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says no one cares if you smoke a joint.

The Hollywood actor-turned-governor signed a law five weeks ago that made possession of up to an ounce of marijuana the equivalent of a traffic ticket. It carries a penalty of no more than a $100 fine and no arrest or criminal record.

He defended the law Monday, telling Jay Leno on NBC’s “Tonight Show” it is a good idea.

According to a transcript of the interview, Schwarzenegger says: “No one cares if you smoke a joint or not.”

On Election Day, voters rejected an initiative that would have allowed adults age 21 and older to possess and grow small amounts of marijuana.

The governor, who is wrapping up his final term, told Leno the ballot proposal went too far.

yeah, and look who he is married to.

and that one joint came up out of mexico by the TONS & TONS on the backs of the illegals who are so entrenched in America here that anyday now obama can trigger a massive nationwide slaughter-riot by the illegals, they are in every city and capable of killing millions of innocent AMERICANS. they already back obama.

we’ve all seen the hidden trailside vids, we’ve all seen the news every single day, these illegals in America are heavily armed with more weaponry and better armed than our military —and Joe Q Farmer down on the farm. we armed AMERICANS will go down fighting, but we already know obama will not defend us, this is what he and soros have planned.

and don’t forget the hundreds of thousands of Somali “immigrants” entrenched across America in the last 20 yrs who smoke dope and abduct 14yr old girls for prostitution. these are the same ones who are MUSLIM and will saw your child’s head off in front of you.

Funny how so many of us can rail against the San Francisco council for making it illegal to include a toy in “unhealthy” kids meals. We see that as a violation of our rights…that we the people are certainly smart enough to decide whether or not to feed our children McDonalds, etc… We understand that eating fast food is unhealthy, and are capable of enjoying it in small doses. However, we choose to jettison that logic when its comes to applying it to marijuana. Don’t be victims of years of rhetoric and unfounded aspersions. Of course long term use can be harmful. Seems to apply to nearly everything. But, as this is a natural phenomenon, and needs no help from man, I can’t help but consider its existence, for lack of a better word, “intended,” and we, as adults, can use our own judgement as to how and when we would like to use it. If you just get rid of the stigma attached to it, and apply the logic and reasoning we defend so many other things with, I think our cooler heads would prevail. Incidentally, I am not even a user, but I see no issue with defending the rights of those that choose to use wisely. I know far too many functioning, contributing, otherwise normal members of society who smoke small amounts to think some sort of “reefer madness” uprising exists. Its always been here…It always will.

Well, like much that comes from the left, that’s not exactly true. Law enforcement agencies “care”, employment depends on being ‘clean’ or companies suffer at the hands of federal government, many states require you to be ‘clean’ to receive social benefits. This doesn‘t mean you are UTI only that you have ’consumed’ over the last month. “No one cares if you smoke a joint or not.” is a personal statement that is unqualified and untrue.

This is not a simple issue. If you look at all the dynamics you will see that when we as people try to control behaviors thru laws and penalties you often get just as many more problems, waste money and people’s time.

Create all the laws you want people always smoked pot. So lets move past the principle that a law will stop anything.

I guess the big concern is how deep would pot penetrate into society. Not sure, but I could see good information lifestyle campaigns curtailing much of the feared penetration.

Bottom line is gov is not the silver bullet to control people’s behaviors and we need to stop running to them to create laws that have no affect asides from creating criminal markets.

Looking at these comments, I guess I am more Libertarian than Tea Party.
They should legalize growing a small amount of plants for personal use. They’re going to smoke anyways-legal or illegal. But this way there‘s no blood on their hands if they smoke what they’ve grown as opposed to buying it from the evil drug gangs that are decapitating people, etc. Legalizing small amounts may decrease the value and decrease the demand for marijuana illegally entering the US through our line in the sand Mexican border. If they sell it like liquor or any other legal drug, then tax it at the same rate as alcohol. Maybe they can generate some revenue instead of pouring millions of dollars into the failed drug war. I’d rather the government generate revenue than some murderous drug lord and gang bangers. If they were here today, wouldn’t the Founding Fathers be puzzled as to why marijuana has become illegal? There’s nothing wrong with someone sipping on a cocktail or a 6-pack after a long day’s work – the same goes for smoking a joint.

The enforcement and prosecution of the marijuana laws have damaged and ruined more lives than the actual use of it. It seems a lot of the talk against it assumes that users will be walking around stoned all the time if legalized. Who is more of a threat to society? Someone enjoying a joint legally in their living room or some sober person out running stop signs? The main reason legalization is so difficult is the government can’t find a way to tax a natural substance that people can easily cultivate and traffic, bypassing taxes and creating a free market. Any lawmaker who believes in liberty and is opposed to legalizing marijuana is a hypocrite.

Somebody has to explain to me how the government telling me what I can and can’t do when it comes to possession of small amounts of marijuana is NOT a violation of my civil rights, and thus not an example of government intrusion. I’m not the captain of the psychedelic express or anything, but I’ve always found this to be a hypocrisy with some of my fellow conservatives. It really is just a joint. Tower7femacamp has it right to compare this to the massive abuse of prescription drugs by our youth. Those drugs permanently alter psychological growth in children, and yet many Dr.’s see no harm in prescribing them, and the parents blindly do what they’re told. We need to truly, objectively see things for what they truly are, and not rely on one-liners and tired punchlines when discussing this issue. Or am I too stoned to know what I’m talking about? This particular drug causes paranoia, lethargy, irrational behavior and more. Some can handle it better than others, but long term effects are severe. Some will say alcohol and nicotine are similar, but I say we don’t need more “diversity”, we need more unity on creating a better society.

Based on what I heard, even those that support legalization of MJ didn’t approve of Prop 19 because it created a bigger burden on MJ use. I think the people of California are content with current laws and didn’t want MJ to be taxed extra which Prop 19 proposed.

There is an article about this on “Toke Around Town” web page. The reason the law did not pass has nothing to do with any anti-movement and everything to do with money. The law would have change the easy and big money the growers are enjoying today. The proponents did not get the growers to vote for it.

Your wrong. Progressives as you call them must support some kind of freedom or they would simply be known as statists. Some progressives may actually believe in free choice but the movement would move to kill that off along with economic rights. The truth is that one cannot have one without the other.
The reason they seem pro liberty is because they know the Christian right is always there to do the job they don’t want to. Making the right look bad and giving them something to run against. Even if they do think you should have the freedom to smoke, there social programs like health care will make it to expensive and push the argument into the realm of the collective. Where its no longer a personal matter because every one is the owner of your body, mind, and production except you.

      All drugs should be legal.
NOTHING should be illegal that does not infringe on the rights of another.
Freedom to make the right choice does not exist unless there is the freedom to make the wrong.
Before you condemn this you should really think. Is the purpose of law to serve the people or the state.
