‘Scientific’ Study Boils Conservatism Down to a Brain Problem

A group of British researchers believe they have found why people are conservative: it’s a brain disorder of sorts.

Scientists at the University of London say that conservatives have an enlarged “fear” area in their brains, and smaller areas associated with courage and optimism. The London Telegraph reports:

Scientists have found that people with conservative views have brains with larger amygdalas, almond shaped areas in the centre of the brain often associated with anxiety and emotions.

On the otherhand, they have a smaller anterior cingulate, an area at the front of the brain associated with courage and looking on the bright side of life.

The researches say there is a direct correlation between the sizes of those areas and one’s political views.

“We were very surprised to find that there was an area of the brain that we could predict political attitude,” Prof Geraint Rees, who led the research, told the Telegraph.

He added: “It is very surprising because it does suggest there is something about political attitude that is encoded in our brain structure through our experience or that there is something in our brain structure that determines or results in political attitude.”

But there’s just one problem: the research only studied a total of 93 brains — three politicians and 90 students.

The website Gawker gives the study the treatment it‘s due in a paragraph mocking the scientists’ conclusions:

So there you have it. I don‘t think it’s wildly extrapolating or jumping to any conclusions to say that this study definitively proves that conservatism is a brain disorder. I think that’s been proven by this 90-person study. Conservatives are all stupid brain-damaged idiots who are stupid and brain-damaged. And idiots.

It ends with an appropriate one word sentence: “SCIENCE.”

Wesley Smith over at First Things points out a couple more flaws in the study:

Notice “normal” brain structure is always the liberal.

Besides, what is “conservative” in the UK, may be middle of the road in the USA.  Does that mean our conservatives’ brains are even more convoluted?  And again, some people become conservatives after being liberal.  Look at Ronald Reagan and First Things founder, Fr. Richard John Neuhaus.

And while he contends political views are largely shaped by experiences, he wonders what might happen if the study’s conclusions actual gain traction:

But, if its all in our hard wiring, we’d better make political views a suspect category for civil rights and hate crime protection. After all, we shouldn’t punish or discriminate against anyone for being who they are.

UPDATE:

Tommy Christoper over at Mediaite notices the study was commissioned by actor Collin Firth in a “light-hearted” attempt to discredit conservatives, and it has yet to be peer-reviewed.

“I took this on as a fairly frivolous exercise: I just decided to find out what was biologically wrong with people who don’t agree with me and see what scientists had to say about it and they actually came up with something,” Firth admitted.

It’s probably fair to say this is a case of an already-held conclusion (not simply a hypothesis) searching for evidence.

      Because they are afraid of their country being attacked, their citizens being harmed, and families burning alive. They take action to prevent all of that.

      Really though, even if this study is found to be legit it’s a good thing. Fear is healthy. And like the article says, there’s no baseline for “normal”. Of course, the libs will just twist it their way just like everything else… but that only proves how dirty they are.

      I have an idea: Go in and remove this section of brain and see what happens. See if it’s more or less valuable to us. See if there are more or less deaths.

    Even though this is an absolutely pathetic study, I’ll still humor it: Fear is a survival tactic. Self-preservation and independence absolutely rely on it remaining intact. Animals that lose their fear die. Or in the case of humans, become naïve slaves who unquestioningly obey their masters in the government.

      Here’s the first tip off. Correlation. Correlation is not causation, any good student of science knows that from day one.

      Secondly, note the bias. “smaller areas concerning courage and looking on the bright side of life”, to paraphrase. Ok, who wants to be the first to note that a majority of conservative types served in the military, voluntarily, and often in life threatening combat situations, with honor and courage? Does it thus make sense, to anybody really, that they’d *lack* courage as a biological trait?

      Third, the study was conducted on some students. Students! And what, 3 politicians? ~90 some people, in one non-peer reviewed, non-reproduced study that can only claim “correlation” to its findings, and from this the articles/study draws the conclusion that people not on the left are genetically/mentally deficient?

      Is this a joke? I suppose it’s meant to make liberals feel good about themselves, and given the low intellectual bar required to do that, probably succeeds at its mission.

      I’m eternally optimistic about most things in life, and can’t recall flinching in the face of real danger. Most on the left I meet, and I mean the vast overwhelming majority, are easily convinced of conspiracy theories, live in a state of near constant paranoia or delusion, are easily led by the nose and also contain a very, very hard and fast kernel of bitterness and anger that reaches to the very pits of their souls.

      I put forward that conservatives have more highly developed brains than their liberal counterparts. Conservatives tend to be more analytical and rely on cold, hard facts for assessments and decisions, where the liberals view the world emotionally, following their ‘feelings’ about the way the world is or should be.

      Wouldn’t it be wonderful living in liberal utopia la la land and not seeing reality. It must be kind of like a permanent vacation…lol!

      The report didn’t suggest that conservatism was a “brain disorder,” only that people with strong conservative views and people with strong liberal views had slightly different brain structures. The title of this story is highly misleading.

      The story implies that to be a leftist means that you’re more optimistic, happy and less fearful of things, and if you‘re not a leftist you’re more fearful of things, not happy and not optimistic.

      It seems to me to be insulting from the get go. Further, as somebody else already pointed out, what about people who start as youth as liberals and become conservatives? Their entire brain structure does not change, so apparently this “correlation” is only that, a preconceived set of ‘facts’ used to ‘prove’ a hypothesis that the ‘scientists’ had already decided the outcome of from the get go.

      I wish I could be liberal. I wish I could believe that everyone is entitled to everything and we can all live in peace, love, and harmony. i wish I could believe that big government could take care of all the poor and all the sick and make the world a better place. It sounds absolutely wonderful, for instance, that everyone will get free health care. It sounds absolutely wonderful, for instance, that the government can just print and spend without consequence. I’m sure all of us, liberals and conservatives alike, wish we could just borrow money into perpetuity and spend, spend, spend. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work.

      They seem happier and more optimistic because they live in a fantasy world where nothing is their own fault and everyone else is just keeping them down. The corporations ruin everything, in their world. I mean, they rant and rave about it all the time using their Macintosh computers while listening to their iPods. They’re right. Corporations like Apple suck. If it hadn’t been for Microsoft or AOL making the Internet usable by the masses, we wouldn’t even have to listen to them rant and rave. Hey, wait a minute, corporations do suck.

      Please, someone explain to me how it can work without destroying the very mechanisms that create the prosperity you wish to spread, and I’ll reconsider liberalism. It does *sound* nice.

      Liberals more optimistic and hopeful? That I can believe.

Fear is what gives us fight/flight. Fear is how we recognize danger. So I look at it this way, the liberals apparently lack an important survival skill. That is why they make such good “slaves” to the liberal agenda. They don’t have enough fear mechanism to realize the danger they are in.

      It’s funny but the study suggests just the opposite of real life. Conservatives are typically self reliant, risk takers who frequently join the military. Liberals (and yes there was just another study showing liberalism as a real mental “disorder”) are typically the cowards, who can’t take of themselves and have a dim view of others abilities to do the same. The study is obviously a fraud and/or they don’t really know what those areas of the brain truly affect. Think about it, most liberal men are wimps does this study support that observation?       Equally hilarious is the notion that the liberal brain is “normal.” Even in the face of historical evidence to the contrary, liberals still believe their policies work.       Lastly, this is obviously a joke but I’m certain many libs will be citing this “study” as proof that Conservatives are somehow mentally inferior. Just today, on FOX, I watched as John Stossel asked people on the street who they thought gave more to charity, Democrats and Republicans. Most people replied Democrats, even though it’s been shown to be the opposite (the usual reasoning: “Republicans don’t care about people.”) The new strategy on the left, media included, is to keep people uninformed and ignorant…and it’s working!       I have a theory – keep an eye out for this folks – based on a few stories recently, and the fact that liberals keep framing conservatives as “crazy, loons, etc.” that there will be a concerted effort to paint conservative viewpoint as being a thought disorder. I work for a local mental health agency. There is a way for an individual to petition to have another person undergo a psych eval to see if they should have treatment. It would not suprise me if the end game is to eventually come up with a named disorder, and work toward a way to place conservatives in institutions or put us on meds. I’m really not much of a conspiracy person, but given the last few years I would not put it past them to try…

      Among many other features, the two amygdalae (right and left), produce analytical/emotional and sequential/logical cognition relating to identifying threats. The emotion of fear originates there for everyone, but the complex process of reconciling fear between the right and left sides in a given context is subjective and complex, will vary across individuals and is not completely understood.

      It’s reasonable to think that larger amygdalae can produce more fear, but it is more reasonable to extrapolate that larger size allows for an aggregation of larger data sets and wider range of contexts to be assessed.

      It looks like their data might be right but their conclusions skewed.

      If conservatives have larger amygdalae, it likely means we have more capacity to aggregate sequential information and better understand the many dimensions of socio-political danger we are in. If anything, amygdalae deficient liberals cannot process as much information. Their smaller cognitive capacity makes them oblivious to threat information that is obvious to conservatives. Yes, you might notice more fear in conservatives, but only because we know more, are processing more information and are not walking around with our heads in the clouds singing kumbaya like most liberals. Fear is a good thing when it catalyzes reaction or preparation to defend against a threat.

      All I can say is most of what I am seeing in politics, economics and culture today makes my amygdalae bleed.

      Actually, it was a “joke” study commissioned by a very sad and bitter little man-actor, in order to make himself and his leftist cohorts feel a sense of smug superiority. Get it? It wasn’t actually *real*, in the sense of science. Even if it was a real study, it would not be a theory, at best it would be a hypothesis, and even that’s on shaky ground. More like data gathering (not testing, data gathering) against a specific as of yet untested question.

      Overcoming fear in a dangerous and or life threatening situation = Courage

      It’s a little ironic that “lefties” are actually more emotional/analytical “right brain dominant”. But that really makes sense. Their emotions predominate but because their amagdalae are smaller they cannot process as much information. Many liberals want a free ride on the wings of success of the rest of us and believe that in order to achieve that free ride, government must impose harsh rules which are essentially punishment of hard working Americans, in the form of progressive taxation and other schemes designed to divert personal wealth to those who depend upon government.

      Most liberals are intolerant and immature just as are spoiled children. In fact they are the adult version of spoiled children complete with certain sociopathic traits such as pathologic lying and distortion of facts in order to achieve their goals. One example of this is Al Gore’s bogus global warming phenomenon, the objective of which is cap and trade which would redistribute wealth while controlling most Americans through oppressive energy prices. Global warming has been disproved numerous times by real scientists without a liberal socialist agenda. Cap and trade has been tried in Europe and did not work. Now we are in the midst of one of the coldest winters on record!

      A second example of liberal lies is Obama’s heatlhcare debacle which is unaffordable and destroys any advantage our system has over that of other nations and which was rammed down our collective throats largely unread by members of Congress. The liberal Left propagated numerous lies which include “it will save money”, “it will provide care for uninsured Americans”, and “it will have no effect on your private plan”. Never mind the law did not address the most expensive burden on the heatlhcare system—tort reform. Never mind that half of the “uninsured” are voluntarily so. Never mind that competition of insurance companies across state lines was not an integral part of the law. This law is an exercise in control of the people by government pure and simple. Fortunately, we cannot afford it and so it is doomed to failure.

      Another example of liberal mental disorder is the liberals’ claim of tolerance for all religions, even those bent on destroying America. Their legal embodiment is the ACLU which strives to destroy the rights of Christians and Jews as well as desecrate the sacred symbols and celebrations of these two religions. Thus most liberals are intolerant, and worse than that, hypocrites.

      Liberals are peaceniks who believe if they disarm themselves, the rest of the world will too. This is reflected in Obama’s attempt to downsize our nuclear arsenal while ignoring that collectively there are many nuclear powers besides Russia which are greater threats to our existence. Naivety or stupidity, or both? Liberals deny that anyone would war with us if we seek diplomacy to resolve differences. They never learn the lessons of history such as the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and Hitler’s invasion of Europe resulting in the tragic annihilation of millions of innocent human lives.

      While the rest of the world including the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Iran and North Korea develops energy independence through mining of fossil fuels and construction of nuclear power plants, the Obama administration does not. Why not? Do liberals understand the equation between energy independence and national security? America is the most insecure energy dependent industrialized nation on Earth!

      Liberals mental disorder is characterized by narcissism, selective memory, irrational approaches to problems and denial of reality. Unfortunately, during the 2008 election, too many gullible dimwits voted those with severe liberal mental disorder into control of our national affairs and now we reap the tragic consequences which include a multi-trillion dollar debt which alone will kill our nation if not addressed immediately.
