Scientist Tied to Global Warming Being Investigated for ‘Scientific Misconduct’

JUNEAU, Alaska (The Blaze/AP) — A federal wildlife biologist whose observation in 2004 of presumably drowned polar bears in the Arctic helped to galvanize the global warming movement has been placed on administrative leave and is being investigated for scientific misconduct, possibly over the veracity of that article. Newser has more:
Charles Monnett is being investigated for unspecified “integrity issues” apparently linked to his report that polar bears could face an increased threat of death if they’re forced to swim farther as Arctic ice recedes.
Monnett, an Anchorage-based scientist with the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, or BOEMRE, was told July 18 that he was being put on leave, pending results of an investigation into “integrity issues.” But he has not yet been informed by the inspector general’s office of specific charges or questions related to the scientific integrity of his work, said Jeff Ruch, executive director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.
(Related: New study of NASA data may debunk global warming predictions)
On Thursday, Ruch‘s watchdog group plans to file a complaint with the agency on Monnett’s behalf, asserting that Obama administration officials have “actively persecuted” him in violation of policy intended to protect scientists from political interference.
Monnett, who has coordinated much of the agency’s research on Arctic wildlife and ecology, has duties that include managing about $50 million worth of studies, according to the complaint, a copy of which was provided to The Associated Press.
The complaint seeks Monnett’s reinstatement along with a public apology from the agency and inspector general. It also seeks to have the investigation dropped or to have the charges specified and the matter carried out in accordance with policy. The complaint also says that investigators took Monnett’s computer hard drive, notebooks and other unspecified items from him, which have not been returned.
A BOEMRE spokeswoman declined to comment on an “ongoing internal investigation.” Ruch said BOEMRE has barred Monnett from talking to reporters.
Documents provided by Ruch’s group indicate questioning by investigators has centered on observations that Monnett and fellow researcher Jeffrey Gleason made in 2004, while conducting an aerial survey of bowhead whales, of four dead polar bears floating in the water after a storm. They detailed their observations in an article published two years later in the journal Polar Biology; presentations also were given at scientific gatherings.
In the peer-reviewed article, the researchers said they were reporting, to the best of their knowledge, the first observations of polar bears floating dead offshore and presumed drowned while apparently swimming long distances in open water. Polar bears are considered strong swimmers, they wrote, but long-distance swims may exact a greater metabolic toll than standing or walking on ice in better weather.
They said their observations suggested the bears drowned in rough seas and high winds and “suggest that drowning-related deaths of polar bears may increase in the future if the observed trend of regression of pack ice and/or longer open water periods continues.”
The article and presentations drew national attention and helped make the polar bear something of a poster child for the global warming movement. Al Gore’s mention of the polar bear in his documentary on climate change, “An Inconvenient Truth,” came up during investigators’ questioning of Gleason in January.
In May 2008, the U.S. classified the polar bear as a threatened species, the first with its survival at risk due to global warming.
According to a transcript, investigator Eric May asked Gleason his thoughts on Gore referencing the dead polar bears. Gleason said none of the polar bear papers he has written or co-authored has said “anything really” about global warming.
“It’s something along the lines of the changing environment in the Arctic,” he said. Gleason said others put their own spin on research or observations.
The complaint alleges Gleason and Monnett were harassed by agency officials and received negative comments from them after the article was published. Gleason eventually took another Interior Department job; he didn‘t respond to an email and a BOEMRE spokeswoman said he wouldn’t be available for comment.
Ruch also claimed the investigation is being done by criminal investigators with no scientific background, even though the case is an administrative matter.

We will tax you very heavily to force you off your crazy energy consumption and we will give that money to the less fortunate –namely themselves– and that will fix things.
I guess when you’re hammer, every problem is a nail. Not only their assertions are ludicrous but their solutions are right down delusional. I tell you what commies YOU CAN GO TO HELL!! Did it occur to anyone that, if the polar bears in question were found drowned after a storm, the storm may have had something to do with their deaths? Has the entire U. S. community of scientists been corrupted by this global warming/climate change scam which is being promoted by the Socialist Culture of Death Elitists and their big money backers? Report Post »Chrono_Sleuth
Posted on July 28, 2011 at 10:56am@smith…ok, why didn’t you? No one is stopping you from posting something “amazing.”
@wayner…yes, volcanoes eschew more toxic gas, more sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide (not actually bad for the environment unless levels outpace O2 by 1.x:1 margin or higher, because oxygen breathers cannot break down CO2 effectively not because it “causes” global warming, which it doesn’t). Lots of Carbon Monoxide, silver nitrate, etc. etc. etc. is released into the air. Don’t forget about the ash cloud too, which suffocates thousands to millions of animal species while the force of the volcanic explosion wipes out hundreds to thousands of acres of plant life. Of course in the end the soil is enriched and the land is quickly repopulated.
Anyway I find it sad no one here actually read the end of the article. It was rather important. The man never claimed polar bears were dieing due to global warming. So something else is going on here for the very system that used his research to push global warming, now climate change, to turn on the first star they wanted to label. Maybe some research of his went against his initial claim? Who knows, what we do know is he still believes the ice caps are receding, when in fact they have cycles of recession and growth due to fluxuations in climate…what causes that, oh ya, the sun.
In a greenhouse, plants create heat much like humans (walk into a rainforest, it’s pretty warm under the canopy), oxygen burns, light also causes heat..

“…polar bears could face an increased threat of death if they’re forced to swim farther as Arctic ice recedes.”
Has anyone watched the discover channel enough to see a polar bear try to walk? They walk like 70 year old Bull Riders! They are sea mammals essentially spending the majority of their lives in water. I doubt an extra half mile swim to land is going to make these amazing animals die from exhaustion.

Posted on July 28, 2011 at 11:02pmSeals? Why do they also hate the whales? Hasn’t anyone else seen the footage of whales (Beluga) being trapped under the ice in colder years? They are forced to congregate under one small opening that the bears exploit. Some days you eat da bear, some days da bears eat whales. Jus sayn.
How many glaciations/interglacials have there been in the last 5-10 million years??? Yet polar bears still exist? Seems they may be more adaptable than our “finest” scientific minds can account for?
All I know is that when I gave a bunch of 6th graders an overview of the biogeography of the last 5 million years, there was an audible gasp of relief in the room when it dawned on them that indeed they weren’t killing polar bears and penguins by their own mere existence. It is a shame – the guilt trip that biased scientists who profit from their own funding are laying on the next generation.

If a storm roils up and is large enough. It can drown many creatures out there, especially a Polar Bear. These Bears have been known to swim for almost 50 or 60 miles. If they get turned around and head out to open sea, how often does that happen? I suppose when they are 70 miles from land and too tired to continue. But with their great fat layers Polar Bears are extremely buoyant and impervious to the cold. It would take something quite extraordinary to have multiple Bear drownings within the same period of time.

The slide-rule factor of error. Western spotted owl needing old growth conifer forest to survive. When this debate occurred, experts outside government/world preservationist-no access mentality, were dismissed as being with a tainted mind. The Western spotted owl, as it now is accepted, was being murdered by what appears to be a nature westward migration over the Rocky Mt’s by an aggressive Eastern Barred Owl. Solution in the work, by government, hirer shooters to eliminate the barred owl.
Private biologists insisted, without recognition, that the spotted owl had several (geographic) sick communities that needed study, and that they could show that this owl did very well inside of second growth regeneration forests (both private and government).

See according to evolution scientist man statrted out a a plain ape that needed to stand up right a high to see over the tall grass for preditors and food. Posted on July 28, 2011 at 8:34amNow observe that in all the propaganda of the ecologists—amidst all their appeals to nature and pleas for “harmony with nature”—there is no discussion of man’s needs and the requirements of his survival. Man is treated as if he were an unnatural phenomenon. Man cannot survive in the kind of state of nature that the ecologists envision—i.e., on the level of sea urchins or polar bears . . . .
In order to survive, man has to discover and produce everything he needs, which means that he has to alter his background and adapt it to his needs. Nature has not equipped him for adapting himself to his background in the manner of animals. From the most primitive cultures to the most advanced civilizations, man has had to manufacture things; his well-being depends on his success at production. The lowest human tribe cannot survive without that alleged source of pollution: fire. It is not merely symbolic that fire was the property of the gods which Prometheus brought to man. The ecologists are the new vultures swarming to extinguish that fire. “The Anti-Industrial Revolution,” Return of the Primitive: The Anti-Industrial Revolution, 277. Ayn Rand
