Scientists Analyze Amazonian Tribe That Has No Concept of Time or Dates

Ever wish there were more hours in your day?  Imagine a world in which the time plays a very limited role in your life — a world where you’re free from schedules, calendars and the stresses of keeping up with the daily grind.

Enter the Amondawa tribe, a group of people scientists say have no concept of dates, times and the like.  Seem impossible?  Well, it’s not.

Scientists Analyze Amazonian Tribe That Has No Concept of Time or Dates

Scientists have analyzed this unique culture and have found that time is such a foreign concept that they don‘t even have words for ’day,‘ ’year,‘ ’week‘ or ’month.’  Chris Sinha, a professor at the University of Portsmouth, tells Mail Online that this “…is the first time scientists have been able to prove time is not a deeply entrenched universal human concept.”  Sinha says:

‘We can now say without doubt that there is at least one language and culture which does not have a concept of time as something that can be measured, counted or talked about in the abstract.

‘This doesn’t mean that the Amondawa are “people outside time”, but they live in a world of events, rather than seeing events as being embedded in time.’

In a way, the Amondawa lead simplistic lives.  Rather than focusing in on hours, their time is divided into day and night and their seasons are split into “rainy” and “dry.”  And guess what?  They’re ageless!  Okay, this is clearly an impossibility, but, unlike other cultures, the Amondawa don’t keep track of years accumulated:

Instead, they change their names to reflect their life-stage and position within their society.

For example, a little child will give up their name to a newborn sibling and take on a new one.

While scientists were certain that time was deep-rooted into our brains, the Amondawa throw a wrench into that theory.  As more attention comes to this tribe, one wonders how long they’ll be able to continue avoiding a concept the rest of us are so focused upon.

if you read the article carefully, they do exactly the opposite of the headline…they just use different tags for time…rainy season v. dry season…change of names at certain ‘ times ’ in their life…why do people have to create something out of nothing…

Because scientists are obviously “smart people”. We little folk are “dumb people” especially conservatives. Tribal people are stone age specimens to be poked, prodded and studied like lab animals. No one looks for the brilliance in their activity. Granted, some of the customs are really backward, but many things they do….many in modern society could learn from.

You can experience a timeless state. You have to switch your sense of self from the flow of thoughts to the actual sensation of your body being alive. It‘s like those optical illusions where you can see one thing or another but not both at the same time and it’s rather difficult to switch back and forth usually. Google search “optical illusion, the wife or the mother in law” your whole sense of self can switch like that.

I’m al lot like that. I’m always accused of not being able to be “on time”. My husband says I have no concept of time. When he retired something strange also happened to him. Now he sometimes asks me what day it is. Last week I had to ask him what year it was. The event we are always aware of is when the retirement check comes on the first of every month. We may not be too different from the Amondawa. I just hope scientists don’t try to study us. We are very private and armed to boot.

im sure they have terms or and idea of the past, and remember that past in specific terms thus completely destroying the premise of this “”"”"”“scientific find ””"”"”"”"

It was my understanding that many of the indigenous peoples didn’t have concepts of time. Particularly the Aborigines. This is really much more fascinating than the article leads on to. People don’t realize how much stress and anxiety comes from living with time. The pressures and so forth. People would have expectations like, one should have a home, family, and good career going by 35, for example.

SO much of everything that seems to technologically advance us, really inhibits our lives. However, with out the technology, our lives certainly wouldn’t be so long either. Since it took me a while to get life right, I guess I prefer the latter – Thanks be to God

I agree. I try to live in the moment and only get messed up when I find myself pushed about by the agenda of others. I have lived by my chickens time for years, up with the rooster and to bed when the chickens go in. On the topic of time, I have often wondered if the Bible time is based on our noon being the beginning of the new day. It is the only way it could be the same for all people no matter where they were. The Bible says the “evening and the morning were the first day” and so on. Well, evening starts as the sun passes the noon zenith. Morning begins as the sun starts its rise which is our midnight.

So, is it our job to bring them up to speed? I am so tired of America thinking we need to change the world. Next we will here these people live in poverty and we need to give them money to buy the things they need to be happy and productive. Frankly, I think these people are probably the richest people in the world and now that the world has found them they will start down the road to destruction. I see it starting now, those are not their native clothing.

I am speaking of all the do-gooders here that think we need to change the way other cultures live. It is just that these scientists have found people that have been found (probably missionaries) because these people are not wearing native clothing. I learned about these people when I was in college 30 years ago and they did not wear western clothing then. I am just upset because a family member keeps telling me how horrible people live in third world countries. Who are we to judge that people that have lived a particular way for thousands of years are living in poverty? If they are happy and productive why should they change? Who are we to judge what poverty is? I know this story is not about poverty, but it is about differences in cultures and where does it go from here.

oh thank God I have you out there to set me straight, how silly of me, finally SOMEONE around who is an expert….. perhaps you should now set the scientists straight, many still think we evolved too.

      sci·ence   /ˈsaɪəns/ Show Spelled
      [sahy-uhns] Show IPA

      –noun
      1. a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws: the mathematical sciences.
      2. systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.
      3. any of the branches of natural or physical science.
      4. systematized knowledge in general.
      5. knowledge, as of facts or principles; knowledge gained by systematic study.
      6. a particular branch of knowledge.
      7. skill, especially reflecting a precise application of facts or principles; proficiency.

There, now you can learn what science is and is not too! You will notice the definition contains the word “knowledge” several times, guess the scientists mentioned here missed that part. If you are having trouble comprehending maybe you can ask your mommy to explain it to you.

We measure time in events all the time – the ticks of a watch are events, too; They are just a more sophisticated measure of events which help a civilized people coordinate economic ventures.

The fact that these people don’t measure a lot of events just means that they are incredibly economically inefficient. This is a culture to be lamented and aided (if they want), not lauded.

Such BS, foundations grant $ for “studies” they have run out of topics for.
A “lost” tribe that uses tin cups, wears sweatshirts, t-shirts and jeans, but no idea of time ?
Go to haight-ashbury, they are a dime a dozen.
Hell, we have ‘em here in Portland Maine.

It would be different if they ran away from the “scientist” bare-a$$ed.
There are no more “lost” tribes or uncontaminated “cultures”

The electric wire with a lightbulb has taken care of that.
Those two things have broken the back of every culture they have been brought to.
They introduce the concept of DEBT, consumption, and a manipulated currency to pay for it.

I say Give ‘em a cell-phone, they will need jobs and be on the clock in a month.

Sorry to tell ya’ Huffpo and media matters do not constitute news…which completely illustrates the failing of your “arguments” – no substance only inuendos and attacks. Here is challenge for ya’ – try posting facts and figures to bolster you postion rather than name calling or opinions of other non-thinkers….

Why do they need to know time, they have no value for time. Just as when we go on vacation or to the beach. Sun comes up it morning. Then its Coffee time. Time to go for a walk. Breakfast time. Lunch time. Dinner time. Sun goes down it’s night time.

If there’s anything they need to be taught is to stay away from those who want to help.

You can not say they do not have any concept of time “Day time”, “Night Time”. And they also are aware of two seasons. dry, and wet. The article didn’t mention if they had any idea of when the seasons would begin. And I find it hard to believe that they do not realize they get older with each passing day.

Just because they do not have the vocabulary does not mean they are clueless about time.

There may be no need to keep track of time, for a lot of jungle tribes, because they do not plant anything, the jungle provides all the fruits, and the animals….which is why they probably know wet and dry seasons.

We aren’t born with the concept of time, we are taught… first by our parents, grandparents and other family members, and then by others. Our families teach us about time when they tell us of an upcoming event; like, “Tomorrow we will go to McDonalds”, or “ Your birthday will be here in x amount of days” then they promise us a birthday party and we anxously look forward to it…. counting the days. The things that we are promised etch the importance and a reason to look forward to something that we want. As adults, we are forced further into the concept of time by our jobs, the IRS or some other thing that would be unnecessary if we could only pick our food off of trees and wear no clothing.
