Scientists Investigate Inflating, Potentially ‘Super’, Volcano

You may have heard about the huge underground volcano that’s reportedly rising at a rapid rate, relatively speaking, in Yellowstone National Park. Well, there’s another nearly 20,000-foot-high volcano in Bolivia that’s also rising — and before now, scientists thought it was dead.
Uturuncu is surrounded by super volcanoes, which Our Amazing Planet reports, are not just a classification of size but of because of how much they spew:
[...] they typically spew out 1,000 times more material, in sheer volume, than a volcano like Mount St. Helens. Modern human civilization has never witnessed such an event. The planet’s most recent supervolcanic eruption happened about 74,000 years ago in Indonesia.
As of right now, Uturuncu is in the same classification as Mount St. Helens, but, according to Our Amazing Planet, with its rise of one to two centimeters each year for the past two decades, scientists are wondering if it could be the next supervolcano. Researchers are figuring out what exactly is happening now and what it means for the future:
“I call this ‘volcano forensics,‘ because we’re using so many different techniques to understand this phenomenon,” said Oregon State University professor Shan de Silva, a volcanologist on the research team. [...]
“It’s one of the fastest uplifting volcanic areas on Earth,” de Silva told OurAmazingPlanet.”What we’re trying to do is understand why there is this rapid inflation, and from there we‘ll try to understand what it’s going to lead to.”
Although the researchers do not think this, or Yellowstone for that matter, will erupt any time soon, Uturuncu’s magma chamber is growing 10 times faster than other volcano systems of similar size. What de Silva says is important to find out is how long the volcano has been building up its magma stores, as other volcanoes in the area seem to erupt every 300,000 years.
Since they only have 20 years of data for the volcano, scientists are looking at other factors, such as slant in lake bottoms surrounding the volcano and GPS data. The Geophysical Institute Quarterly publication reported that scientists are also “listening” to the volcanic activity through seismic technology and hope to learn more about how to predict super eruptions.
The publication reported researcher Mike West as saying, “They are kinds of eruptions that when they happen, ‘massive’ doesn’t really describe it.”

This whole thing sounds a bit like Manifest Destiny. You know where people who were religious thought that land was ordained to them by God enabling them to murder and sacrifice for God thos who didn’t believe in the God they did. So if you think about it this way, land has value then the rich were the Native Americans and Mexico and the founders of America were taking from the rich(the Native Americans) and distributing to the poor(them selves) America was founded on socialist ideas. I will include things like moral stories when something bad happens and say it was because they refused to worship whatever. Then in 2000 years people will look back at my book when looking for ancient things and say it was accurate in locating such things! See my point here people? The bible includes the “meida” of its day. They took historical events, and stories passed down to them and twisted them into moral and other stories. So its a history book in essence, its what? 2000 years old, of course you can use it to find ancient things. But to totally discredit Science which is only about 300 years old is retarded. Im an athiest but I think when looking for things of this nature you have to use both religious texts and science to find a conclusion. To discredit one or the other just on principle will only lead to a half truth in history.

This was my comment previously to another story and I think is very helpful here:
You have a possibility of 50% that the heaven and Jesus are both real. When you are making a bet on a negative outcome (Heaven is not real), 50% is not high enough. You don´t feel so confident with your bet. When you are making a bet on a positive outcome (Heaven is real), 50% is not so high, but it helps enough. After death, if there is nothing there, we didn´t lose anything (I mean those who believe in Jesus). We never had it, so we didn´t lose anything. We just die. But if there is a heaven and Jesus is waiting for us after death, you are losing an eternity of life and joy (I mean those who don´t believe in Jesus).
With those numbers and possible outcomes, which do you think would be the smartest bet? (Please note that we are using your brain, not your heart or your soul. I didn’t use “Faith”).
Plus: When you have a Jesus in your life, you live in a different way, and it is just better.
Challenge: Can you find anything said by Jesus that is clearly against love or justice in any way? Can you? Can you find him demanding us to do harm to others? Can you find even just one hateful word?

I’m a religious person and I agree about the science vs religion debate.
Religion is meant to address moral issues.
Science is meant to address observed behavior.
The trouble comes when people try to interpret one as the other.
example 1 religion jumping to erroneous conclusion
Bible takes a few paragraphs to describe the creation (but not how it happened).
Religious people then interpret scientific data -presumably with some human error in it- that contradicts what they imagine the creation looked like. They then feel morally obligated – not by doctrine – to reject that science. This would be in error to dismiss without further evidence…which the bible does not provide.
example 2 – atheist
Hypothetically, if someone traveled back in time to 0 BC with a high powered telescope and observed the star in the east and discovered a large comet or short lived super-nova, etc, then some scientific people would see it as proof that it was NOT divine in nature. Just a “natural” event that local superstition made into something else. The data collected does not prove that theory. Sure, the conclusion of divine nature is not part of a scientific construct – something that cannot be observed/measured cannot be science, but that does not pre-determine that an observed phenomena is or is not divine. It is an imposition of moral belief by the atheist that it must not be. And it is an imposition of moral belief by the believer that it must be.

Yep, he’s a garden variety idiot.
We were working on a project for Northrup that had been dismissed by General Atomics because the formula’s never added up to the desired finished product. The Government agency, we’ll call them fido, said that it’s a strict window that must be done according to the data provided by some lame brained government agency mathematician. We looked it over for about a month and told them to scrap the machine idea off of the modeling parameters given because the predetermined information was wrong. We went on to collaborate with an independent agency and built a working model of what the government wanted, just to see if with correct data it could be made to work.
It‘s why I’m not real worried about government infotecsecurity. They are a house of morons who know less about proper data and applications than my dog.

Orificially, (issued from an orifice not normally used for communication) declared a “supervolcano” because our funding is due for renewal soon? Gotcha. The only spew I’m worried about is from faith-based climate change mouthpieces like these ass-hats.

A glimpse of the master plan

Posted on October 21, 2011 at 3:15pmI watched a show on the Discovery channel last night (it was DVR’d) about How The World Will End and it showed 5 different scenarios. One of them was Yellowstone erupting. If what they showed was true, it would effect the entire globe and within a short time over 100 million people would die. The dust cloud would cover the globe and blot out the sun, making it impossible to grow anything. A very sobering thing to consider.

Scientists never said that the Bolivian volcano Uturuncu or Yellowstone was “dead” as you implied. The article above mentioned that scientists thought it was dead, but that point was written by the articles author – Liz Klimas, and I have no idea which scientists she was referring to about saying it is ‘dead’. I believe that Liz Klimas either misunderstood something or someone or else fabricated that statement to make it sound like ‘bigger news’ then it actually is. I have been a geologist for decades and don’t know of any geologists who have thought that either one of these two mentioned volcanoes were dead. Dormant, yes. Dead, no.

For an educated person, you don’t seem to posess a lot of self control. It is possible to express a well thought out and intelligent thought, as you did, without calling people names and being snide. All you’ve done is guarantee that nobody will take your posts content seriously or even read beyond where you called the OP stupid. In other words, you defeated your own intentions with making that post.

Posted on October 21, 2011 at 4:16pmThere is no such thing as a dead volcano, just dormant ones. They claim Mt. Hood is a ‘dead’ volcano yet it rumbles from time to time. When Mt. St Helens rumbled and had a small eruption a few years ago, so did Mt. Hood, when Mt St Helens erupted in the 80s, Mt. Hood REALLY rumbled. Lesson learn, if its a volcano sitting on any lava chamber, it can erupt.

Well, when the libs run out of other people’s money to spend, which should be shortly, I expect most of them to either starve to death or be murdered, since most of them live in the cities and that’s where the riots will be. Can‘t say I’ll shed a tear.

Report Post »GhostOfJefferson
Posted on October 21, 2011 at 3:27pmOr not.
The Mayan calendar works on cycles. The ending of a major cycle doesn’t mean the calendar ends or predicts the end of the world, that’s not how cycle calendars work, it means that a new cycle on the calendar is starting. Thus, Day – 1 for “doomsday” will look exactly like Day +1 after “doomsday”. It’s silly how little people know about something they invest so much fear in, really.
Report Post »US_SOLDIER
Posted on October 21, 2011 at 5:42pmAbsolutely righ Ghost, Not once did the Mayans, or Nostradaumus say “the end of the world” The Mayans merely have a calendar that runs out on December 2012. My guess, they had to stop somewhere. And Nostradaumus merely talks of catastrophic events and follow them up with a great suffering. Not the end of the world. If someone is twisting it into that chances are they are going to ask you for money lol

Posted on October 23, 2011 at 3:20pmon the Mayan calendar: yes, December 2012 is the end of a ‘day’, not the end of the world. But there is more to it than that. The calendar is based on cosmic fluctuations, the 25k year day being the greatest of those fluctuations. This predicts major shifts in gravitational forces, which would induce things like worldwide volcanic activity. Spiritually, they saw this as a time of human change, a time that humans would either evolve to a higher level of understanding, or fail to do so and be destroyed. I don’t know enough about the cosmology they based their predictions on to judge it likely one way or the other, but I will point out the consistency of this worldview with Christian Revelation.
