MYFOXNY.COM – A local news reporter from Washington, D.C. ended up getting covered in what is probably the remnants of raw sewage as he delivered live hurricane reports from Ocean City, Md.
WTTG-TV reporter Tucker Barnes was providing live updates for stations around the country as a wall of what he described as sea foam poured over him.
Barnes was on the boardwalk as Hurricane Irene hit the coast of Maryland
He noted that he had immersed himself in organic material. That “organic material” was most likely the effects of raw sewage pouring into the water during the storm.
“It doesn’t taste great,” he said.
Reporter Gives Update Covered In Sea Foam: MyFoxNY.com
Gawker:
The mystery “sea foam” was mostly likely made up of raw sewage that had poured into the water during the storm and then mixed with cyanobacteria, causing it to foam up. You know, kind of like the nasty top layer that forms on your Frappuccino after you neglect it for a few minutes and the whipped cream starts to melt into the icy brown part. Except toxic.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 5:17pmI am SO conflicted….is this nasty tasting foam indeed evidence of the catastrophic “restless earth syndrome” (formerly known as global warming) as cited by ECURBYY or is it indeed a mammoth corn dog batter spill as was reported by WENEEDRUBIO? Personally, I think it is Oobleck….you know as was foretold in by the amazing Dr. Seuss in “Barthomew and the Oobleck”.

Posted on August 28, 2011 at 9:33amSeriously – sea foam can be caused by a number of things including sewage. This writer is not out of touch and perhaps has done a little more research than you have.
“Like a bathtub full of bubbles, sea foam needs two ingredients,” said Dr. Elizabeth L. Venrick, a marine ecologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., “something to increase the surface tension of the water, like bubble bath, and something to froth it up, like water running into the tub.”
In the ocean, the “bubble bath” is usually dissolved organic material, she said, and strong surface winds or the breaking of waves on the beach stir up the water with air to make bubbles.
“The organic material comes from a number of sources, usually a concentration of biomass, like the phytoplankton bloom that causes red tide or a fish kill,” Dr. Venrick said. (A bloom is an increase in the numbers of some species or complex of species that then die or are eaten, releasing organic material.) The material can also come from sewer spills and other terrestrial runoff, she said.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 1:03pmActually, New York City dumps its waste directly into the rivers…ony a few miles from shore – I would be willing to wager that there is quite a high degree of fecal matter in that foam, which is still toxic, regardless.

Posted on August 28, 2011 at 7:48amI don’t know whether to laugh or puke. These guys (especially Geraldo) try to look brave facing a storm. Thet only succeed in looking stupid. They create situations showing how dangerous it is and how brave they are (remember Geraldo acting like he was dodging bullets when he was actually miles away from the action).

Posted on August 28, 2011 at 10:42amAgreed. They really look more like idiots putting themselves in situations that could ‘really’ be dangerous and expect the audience to see this first-hand idiocy. Too dangerous and often in the way of rescue personnel. We don‘t need to see someone in harm’s way for every storm. Not smart or funny.

The good side of this is that now Obama’s crowd will get serious about corn dog regulation. There are millions of fish gagging as we speak, it is a world wide calamity caused by human corn dog consumption. Posted on August 28, 2011 at 6:30amAs I’ve been following this hurricane in the news we keep seeing “journalists” out there showing how dangerous the storm is. If it really was dangerous, why are they out there? Don’t they realize the mixed messages they are sending. I was watching one journalist interviewing some teens who were out on a pier and got swept off it by a wave as the storm approached. The interview gave this guys 15 minutes a fame for stupidity and then they wonder why, during the next storm their will be more kids out doing the same thing. All they are doing is encouraging acts of stupidity.

Posted on August 28, 2011 at 5:44amI am so sick of hearing about this stupid hurricane. It is a category 1 hurricane, and that isn’t that bad. I rode out Hurricane Isabel in North Carolina in 2003, and I spend most of my time sitting with my head out the window watching the clouds move, and that was a bad enough storm they retired the name. All these media idiots will do whatever they can to dramatize and make it seem horrible. I am in Colorado now, but I wish I was there to ride it out just to prove what pansies the liberals and media are.

Posted on August 28, 2011 at 7:58amTommy I agree with you, I live in Florida and went through Charlie and other weaker storms.. Charlie was some nasty stuff.. If you saw the aftermath of charlie, New York would look like a nuclear attack had taken place had a storm hit like that. This is the government and FEMA ramping up the rhetoric so anything that resembles something bad will constitute a government takeover. A category one metaphorically speaking is similar to a 3 year old blowing bubbles. A category 5 is take cover, stick your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye. It is real simple, turn off the TV! Now more than ever. In a few weeks you will feel much better without it. Get your information elsewhere.
