Seattle Atheists Erect Holiday ‘Knowledge Tree’

Seattle atheists say they are celebrating “human knowledge” with the erection of a “knowledge tree.” But their cryptic message will likely be lost on many passersby as the not-so-uniquely atheist symbol bears a striking resemblance to… a Christmas tree. Via the Spokesman Review:
OLYMPIA — With little fanfare or complaints, Seattle Atheists have erected a decorated tree and a sign on the Capitol campus in honor of not-Christmas.
A tree? As in, a Christmas Tree?
Not exactly. The group calls it “A Tree of Knowledge” — although it’s unclear if they’re unaware of the Biblical implications of such a title, or co-opting it.
But their tree looks suspiciously like a Christmas Tree, considering it’s about a 6-foot conifer with decorations hanging from the boughs. No toys or angels or smiley snowmen for the atheists, however. Their decorations consist of pictures of famous scientists like Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein, covers for books like “Cosmos” and a small copy of the Periodic Table of Elements.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 8:28pmThey put pictures of Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein…….really….Neither embraced atheism. Can’t they find their own scientists. They have to co-op a symbol of Christmas and use the effigy of scientists who never disavowed God to make their point of what exactly?

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 11:27pmNot so much a religion. I am an atheist and my belief system revolves around reason. For more reasons than one, I have trouble with the concept of faith. I like having concrete reasons to explain my answers for how the world works. The world is constantly adapting, and science is adapting to it. Want to know what ****** off an atheist? the arrogance of the faithful. The reason science uses the word theory, is because we can only prove what we can observe and reproduce. For something to be a scientific fact, is a great feat. evolution is the theory that makes the faithful annoy me the most. If evolution does not exist, can you please explain for me how a virus/disease becomes drug resistant? For another theory that some people bring up, relativity. This is still a theory, as scientists say, but we used this “theory” on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I’m pretty sure they would call it proven law. heck gravity is still considered a theory

In your haste to discredit believers you failed to realize that viruses do mutate to adapt to changes, however, they DO NOT mutate into completely new species. Micro-evolution exists and can be easily seen and understood as survival. That does not prove macro-evolution exists. You assume.

There is nothing scientifically provable about the existence of God, although there are a lot of very strong hints sprinkled throughout His creation. In my view Christ’s words advocate a way of living and interacting with people, and groups of people that bring the world closer to peace and something like coexistence although that seems like a distant goal.
I also don’t believe there is a single finding of science that necessarily conflicts with Christianity or any other religion for that matter. In my opinion, God, if there is a God, didn’t give humans brains and inquiring minds to test their faith. He gave us minds and logic to think, to learn, to understand the world. If He gave us a test, it was to save the world or destroy it, and whether to create something like Heaven on Earth, or to give the wealth of the world to the powerful few, a vision in contradiction to my view of Heaven.
No comment on whether I believe in God or not.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 9:18amI am an extremely odd duck, I guess: a bonafide conservative atheist. It strikes me as interesting that in an article about a “tree”, that “christians” take to name calling and insults about atheists. Quite honestly, I really don’t care what you call me, because I am confident about what I believe, and I don’t care what you think about it. But, I’d just like for you to look at yourselves and your “christlike” responses about this tree and ask yourselves why you are so offended. Do christians have a patent on trees? If you’ll notice, the article states:
“With little fanfare or complaints, Seattle Atheists have erected a decorated tree and a sign on the Capitol campus in honor of not-Christmas.”
Where does it say that this was done to spite christians? What harm was done by putting notes on this tree? As far as I see in the article, there is no one standing there with a gun, making you walk any where near the tree, much less read any of the notes.
For some reason, many christians seem at times to feel very threatened by atheists. I am who I am. I don’t hate christians. I don’t begrudge christians their beliefs and their holidays. I don’t call christians names because of their beliefs. To each their own. What is it about tolerance that you are afraid of?
Just as there are many kinds of christians, there are many kinds of atheists. Like most christians, most atheists mean you no harm and will respect your right to believe what you want. Who am I to tell you what to believe? On the other hand, many atheists hide just because they don’t want to be abused and called names (as is evident in the comments to this harmless story).
What’s with the vile comments and the name calling? WWJD? Shame on you.
BTW, a sincere MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of you christians, and to fellow atheists, be proud of your beliefs, and respect others’.

Posted on December 18, 2010 at 10:06am@ Criticalpuppy I agree with you, that name calling is just silly and that we all have a right to believe as we choose. But I think you are not looking at the real issue folks take with these kinds of actions. Of course there is no harm in putting notes on a tree. And it is the right of every American to express themselves as they see fit. But the idea that atheists are JUST expressing themselves as atheists is a little disingenuous. To choose this time and symbol, is NOT about atheism. It is clearly responding to the Christian Holiday in a way that conveys contention, not the tolerance of which you speak.
I think there is an inherent problem with a belief system that, in a large part of its definition, identifies itself with what it DOESN’T believe. I would think that a tolerant non believer would “let them have their fun” and just not participate. But actions like this seem to point out that atheism NEEDS others with a belief in God to have an identity.

I agree that likely atheists are like all other groups of people–some are likely brighter, more intelligent than others. But unfortunately this may actually mean that some of them are stupid–just as any other group of individuals we may find stupid people.
But this particular act–regarding the “tree of knowledge” – - well, my first reaction was to think the ACT is stupid–and I still do. In my opinion, it’s stupid.
OK, perhaps it makes some kind of statement (lost on most because they‘ll likely just assume it’s a Christmas tree), but what other purpose does this serve? To me it also shows anger and hostility towards those who simply are enjoying a holiday and a God in Whom THEY believe. Truly–what is it harming them?!? They can ignore them if they like–big deal. They don’t have to erect Christmas trees themselves or attend Christmas parties, services, exchange presents or whatever. And if they want to, that’s fine too.
Just seems like grinches and scrooges out to spoil enjoyment for others–joy-killers. I’m not “opposed” to atheism. Everyone has rights to believe (or not believe) whatever they wish. But if some atheists want to ruin fun for others, even a sort of mocking them with the use of decorated trees–then IMO they are going out of THEIR way to be mean and deserve any criticism they may receive for their ACT–not their beliefs (or non-beliefs ;-) ).

Posted on December 19, 2010 at 1:41amI would have to describe myself as an atheist since I don’t subscribe to an established religion. But I’m the first to say how idiotic the activist morons that wage war against anything related to christianity are.
Atheist simply means that you don’t follow a religion. I have no interest in denying anyone their perrogative to practice their religion. That’s not being atheist, it’s just using a term in an attempt to justify your hate for a religion.

Actually, we should be talking about both. To understand why, we need to understand the scientific mean of the words “law” and “theory.”
We can use Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation to calculate how strong the gravitational pull is between the Earth and the object you dropped, which would let us calculate its acceleration as it falls, how long it will take to hit the ground, how fast it would be going at impact, how much energy it will take to pick it up again, etc.
While the law lets us calculate quite a bit about what happens, notice that it does not tell us anything about why it happens. That is what theories are for. In the language of science, the word “theory” is used to describe an explanation of why and how things happen. For gravity, we use Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity to explain why things fall. Your snarky comeback was seven seconds on wikipedia or some crash course in christian apologetics to refute my post. Go read the post i was responding to. The simpleton who wrote it may be looking for a friend. You two will get along weel with one another.

They need company as in the saying of old,,misery loves company. Its more than just that of course. Evil needs to destroy good and all that. But I am trying to get more focused on the real meaning of the season and I am not going to let these lost people rain or snow on my parade as it were.

Posted on December 20, 2010 at 7:09pmI don’t know too many atheists that I would categorize as stupid, and I can’t bring myself to care that a group of them wanted to put up a tree of knowledge. I get the outrage at the “You Know its a Myth” board, that was a bit over the line in my opinion, but this? There’s no reason for us to get angry every time an atheist asserts their atheism, just like they have no reason to get angry when we believers assert our Christianity. My nativity scene is not an affront to an atheist’s values, and if he thinks it is, tough. Likewise, I don’t see any reason a tree of knowledge should be an afront to mine. Though I wonder if Capitol Campus would be as forgiving if it WAS a Christmas Tree.
