Seattle May Day Protest Turns Into Black Bloc Gone Wild

Seattle is infamously the home of several of the more violent protests against globalization and capitalism. If May Day’s protests are any guide, the same people are anxious to preserve their reputation.

What started as evidently a peaceful protest spiraled out of control around noon today, as anarchist demonstrators smashed shop windows, attacked banks and even staged random, unexplained assaults on innocent people in cars. One local news station referred to the whole event as “leaving a trail of broken glass and smoke”:

The targets of these protests were not entirely predictable. While banks were attacked, a few of the more novel targets included a “Nike Town” shoe store, which was attacked by an army uniformly black clad protesters, some of whom wore masks, marking them as members of the infamous “black bloc”:

So pervasive was the black bloc presence in that particular attack that one reporter noted, bemusedly, that the number of protesters who were in plain clothes and weren’t interested in violence were the minority.

Nike wasn’t the only seemingly random target – one set of protesters converged on a small white car and began bludgeoning it with unidentifiable objects. The car was reportedly damaged by the incident, with no explanation whatsoever for why the car, or its owner, was targeted. Again, news stories noted that those responsible were “anarchists”:

The chaos got so bad that Seattle’s mayor, Mike McGinn was forced to go on local TV and announce that he was using his emergency powers to expand police power in a 6 minute speech. You can watch below:

“I am issuing an order for the limited purpose of giving the police authority to confiscate items that can be used as weapons. This will be for the duration of the scheduled activities through May Day,” McGinn announced. “We are concerned that the group currently gathered at Westlake may choose to march again, and when they march, and if there are individuals in the crowd who seek to do what they did this morning, it can be difficult to prevent them from doing it, so having this order will allow us to approach people before the march begins in order to confiscate items that can be used to cause property damage or to cause injury to others.”

Mayor McGinn specifically fingered “anarchist or black bloc type individuals” as the people who had made his exercise of emergency powers necessary. “This is something that we are not seeing only in Seattle,” he added ominously.

    The secret to stopping this kind of thing lies with the parents. I told my daughter that if I see or hear of her being involved, I would cut off her tuition payments and cut her out of my will. I worked my whole life to provide her with the benefits she has. If she wants to throw it all away, it’s her choice. It seems to be working. She hasn’t left home all day.

      @SoyBomb: excellent idea. The part now i wonder about is as the mayor has enacted an emergency and thus expanded the police powers how far will this go, will the chaos grow to where Obama can do the same on a national level and if so how long until his dictatorship is complete?

      This month will determine which way we will go as a nation – freedom or serfdom.

      from what i understand the fed govt has been preparing for national martial law and detention camps for years. I remember hearing something about this during Bush’s last year in office. It is basically run through FEMA or something. Do you remember Obama’s 2007 campaign speech when said we need a domestic force just as strong and powerful as the military?

      The structural design of the “proposed” FEMA “camps” entrance zones is disigned in a way that is very condusive to not only speed of deployment, orderly entry, and effective crowd control, they could be easily turned into mass killing depots with the people entering being unaware of what to expect until they are out of options. .

      @KAYDEEBEAU, exactly right. People get so wrapped up in a certain mindset that they can’t break out. Common sense says “don’t hit people with your car.” If you are surrounded and in fear for your life, and your car is all you have, USE IT. Whether you have to drive through someones lawn or run over the threat to get away- just do it. Hammer down, tires squealing, exhaust howling, engine bouncing off of the rev limiter, and if necassary dirtbags bouncing off of the windshield.

      They signed authorization to fund and man the FEMA sites this year. They are re-tooling closed military installations, the one in Northern Michigan is one of them.       There should be ordinances that prohibit masks during demonstrations, making it an crime. Also the police should be spray painting the protesters with permanent indelible ink for instant identification should they run to avoid arrest. It should be sprayed with enough force to penetrate their clothing and permanently stain their skin.

    Didn’t the mayor of Seattle just last year support the goals of the occupy movement? Seems to have come and bit him right where he sits. Where is the equality for the business owners and employers who just had their store fronts smashed.

    Maybe the liberals in Seattle will wake up before their city goes up in flames. Doubt it. I’m sure that they will blame the actions of the protestors at the hands of the right-wing zealots.

Oh for the record they were involved in occupy last fall – one was interviewed by a reported from a local TV channel. A couple listed their occupation was occupy wallstreet!!

      Yea the media tried to use GWB’s school records when he was running against Kerry, but they scrapped that idea pretty quickly when they found out that Bush‘s grades were higher than Kerry’s.     Could someone explain to me how this is going to convince small business owners to hire more people and pay them a higher wage ? Especially the shop owners that were vandalized.

    If the TEA Party protestors would have acted like this they would have been attacked with live ammo by the police.

    Next Occupy protest that turns destructive needs to be met with some brutal vigilantly justice.
    We could wear masks like they do, plus a arm band or some other form of identifying our own.

      You wish. It is a nice dream, but unfortunately we are talking Seattle Police, and not a Ranger Bat.

      The Black Bloc is a bit more militant, organized, and capable than the typical occupy loser. Unlike their occupy peers, they know precisely what they are doing, and why. They don’t fall down like lemmings to be arrested, nor are they pacifists. They fight back, and understand a bit about hit and run small unit tactics. And now that anyone can buy decent night vision for under 100 bucks, you can bet that Black Bloc soldiers will have the same advantages.

      Although certainly not up to the same standard as American Soldiers, these guys have a little more spirit, and seem a bit more practical than the Communist Utopia morons of occupy. Whatever they are, they are young, motivated, and having the time of their lives.

      Which makes them really dangerous. If any one group in this “army” has the ability to effect real change and usher in “real” violence it’s these cats. I take them seriously.

      NVG‘s arn’t as useful in an American city as they are in the woods or even in an Iraqi city. Too much residual light. All those street lights and lit up signs cause them to flare out. They do make helmet mounted thermals now, and they are pretty awesome if you don’t have to look through glass.

      I don’t know Lex. Any of your ideas seem valid. What I do know of anarchists is that they are close in nature to Terrorists at least in the same family. The goals are to cause fear and maximum chaos. They try to create the “EMERGENCY” that Glenn Beck likes to warn about. Whether they have any plans beyond the great “EMERGENCY” would depend on the individual anarchist, I suppose.

      I would think that any funding or association they have with any group, or individual would consist of many cutouts; to avoid inconvenient connections. It’s likely that any funding would be for very limited engagements.

      Think of this Black Bloc group as a more militant arm of Occupy. Remember that despite all of the screeching and shouting, Occupy did not endear itself to most Americans, and even with the media’s help they failed miserably last year. They accomplished nothing.

      It is my opinion that the powers behind the scene are probing. Trying different strategies with different groups. They will wait and see what made a good impression, or effect and then they will likely use that strategy for the summer.

      So if Black Bloc gets things moving in a way that they like, you will see more violence and anarchists. If not, then they will try somthing else. It’s going to be an interesting summer.

      Ranger, since you broke out the Tolkien reference in another post, allow me to refer you to John Milton, the poet/regicide. in Paradise Regain’d his Jesus thwarts the temptations and testings of a capricious Satan by doing nothing at all while the devil dances around trying to break Him. no reaction from the Son creates no results for the tempter and Lucifer retreats to Hell in frustration. the parallel is we should look out for ourselves while not getting sucked into these ows games. they’ll drive more people away from themselves with these shenanigans. as Takeda Shingen said, “the mountain does not move.” hopefully we can spend the summer watching these guys and obama make fools of themselves, not protecting ourselves from them. but, like you said, if one gambit fails, switch tactics, so you won‘t see me napping if this approach doesn’t pan out for the left. plenty of time to get back to the race war insanity.
