Seattle‘s ’Green Jobs’ Stimulus Success… Wait, Isn’t This A Massive Failure?

Seattle’s Mayor Mike McGinn was so proud to be invited to the White House last year by VP Joe Biden. McGinn’s city, Seattle had been chosen to be one of the 25 communities to receive a $20 million dollar slice of the $452 million dollars allocated through the Stimulus program as part of something called “Retrofit Ramp Up.”
Retrofit Ramp Up is a program from the Department of Energy that was spending Stimulus dollars to have houses insulated and made more energy efficient. The plan was to funnel cash into local economies with the intent to create good-paying green jobs while simultaneously reducing energy consumption. Just over a year later, we are starting to see the results of the program.
Seattle’s $20 million dollar allocation was projected to create some 2000 “green jobs” and retrofit at least 2000 homes. Mayor McGinn’s website calls the program “Weatherize Every Building” (WEB) and when the stimulus award was announced, the mayor made a strong prediction:
WEB Initiative will create nearly 2,000 living wage green jobs, and will leverage the grant funding seven-to-one with local investments in energy efficiency.
Just over a year later, the facts on this “Green Jobs” project are not exactly encouraging. Seattle TV station KOMO4 reports:
But more than a year later, Seattle’s numbers are lackluster. As of last week, only three homes had been retrofitted and just 14 new jobs have emerged from the program. Many of the jobs are administrative, and not the entry-level pathways once dreamed of for low-income workers. Some people wonder if the original goals are now achievable.
The entire KOMO report is here:
Only three homes have been retrofitted or insulated in a year? One report claims that only 337 homeowners have stepped up and applied for the program, with only 14 gaining approval.
The effect that the program has had on Seattle’s unemployment is also questionable. In April of 2010, when the $20 million dollar block grant was announced, Seattle’s unemployment stood at 9.0%. As of June 2011, Seattle had a 9.3% unemployment number.

The city of Seattle has the money available to spend and the grant is good until 2013. Seattle’s City Manager for Community Power Works, Joshua Curtis says in order to create 2000 jobs, the city needs to retrofit 100-200 homes each month. According to the KOMO report, they have yet to reach double digits in total.
Over a year since the announcement, the city of Seattle has created 14 jobs.
The lack of jobs is no surprise to local Green Advocates. Go Green is a community organizing group that says it works for the environment and social justice. Got Green’s director Michael Woo (as seen in the KOMO report) says:
“It’s been a very slow and tedious process. It’s almost painful, the number of meetings people have gone to. Those are the people who got jobs. There’s been no real investment for the broader public.”
Even the Greenies see this as disaster.
Epic Fail.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 11:59am20 million divided by 14 = $1,428,571.00 for each job. Even with the cost of retrofitting each of those 3 homes, the money left would be a big salary! Where can I apply. What a great use of stimulus money. Who are these 14 new millionaires?

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 1:06pmLet’s do the math their way,
Report Post »$20,000,000 divided by 2000 jobs created = $10,000 per job. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t that a low paying job? Even at $400 a week on unemployment you would earn $20,800. You do the math.
The reason this story came up is because they are back to get mo money because they could get so much more. Now the fed money has run out and the program just got pushed to the state.
azmomof6
Posted on August 17, 2011 at 1:21pmWas the money supposed to go both to buying materials and paying wages? If no money was spent on supplies for the homes at all and there were really 2000 jobs created, doesn’t make each job worth only $10,000? A $10,000 job will not get a family through a year. All of their numbers are bogus! $20,000,000 is not enough money for 2,000 families to live on, especially when much of that money probably has to be spent on supplies. Didn’t the city have to provide a plan when filing for this stimulus? You know, with questions like, how many houses need work, how much will each home cost, how many people will be needed to do the work. Aside from the fact that these numbers don’t work, maybe we should ask the question of whether or not our money should be taken from us to fix up other people’s homes. I’m certain that is not why taxes were originally put in place in this country. And I know I absolutely would not vote to have my taxes used this way. If government is going to take people’s money, they ought to have a darn good reason, like defending our boarders. That 20 million could have made a difference on our Southern border here. These people who cannot prioritize should not be in government! Stop taking our money in taxes for your own wasteful projects and let us stimulate the economy ourselves. Better yet, let us learn to save our money and acquire wealth!

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 5:17pmazmomof6 – You have to understand how the liberal programs work. This isn’t about buying anything or paying anyone, it is about redistribution of wealth.
Report Post »Typical program. 20 Mil goes to advertising the program, printing paperwork, creating rules, laws and regulations, enforcing the program, and paying consultants and lawyers. This is supposed to stimulate the sheep to upgrade their homes, hiring contractors. The contractors then have to agree to comply with all the paperwork, charge less, earn less, and ask for tax credits which they will file for wrong and get rejected. If the homeowner opts to do the work themselves, they will have the same problem complying with the 30,000 pages of requirements and they get nothing as well.
As others said-if upgrading your home actually saves money, you don‘t need the government to encourage you to do it and you don’t need to spend tax dollars on it. It doesn’t CREATE jobs, pay wages or offset costs.

Who cares when the project starts, it still ads up to 2 thousand low paying, way below poverty level jobs. You need to grow up and stop listening to the left leaning green genies. Posted on August 17, 2011 at 11:42amGreen jobs is a RIPOFF. Let me give you an example…
The Director of Public Services in Cleveland, OH, in coordination with the Mayor and City Council, have implemented one of their Green Agenda trial balloon nightmares under the guise of a “pilot program” described as “free” in pamphlets issued to Cleveland residents.
It‘s a community recycling and trash pickup program touted as a way to reduce the city’s costs of garbage disposal by forcing residents to sort their trash (forced servitude – doing unpaid work the garbageman is paid to do) in order to be picked up by the recycling truck. The city then turns around and sells the presorted recyclables at a profit, while simultaneously hefting a secret tax on the residents by adding a $9 surcharge on garbage pickup to all residents ON THEIR WATER/SEWER BILL! The city then uses the revenue to purchase more cans WITH TRACKING MICROCHIPS to FINE YOU if you don’t comply with their NONMANDATORY “pilot program” – described as “free”!!
They put the hidden garbage tax on the water/sewer bill so that the people cannot vote on a TAX HIKE by law.
HERE COMES THE GREEN POLICE TO FINE YOU FOR NOT ADHERING TO THE ARBITRARY GREEN AGENDA LIKE THE AUDI COMMERCIAL!
Why do you think Rahm Emmanuel wanted to be Mayor of Chicago?
They try to use loose interpretations of city ordinance to coerce you into compliance with their “local rules and regulations”!
Not to mention, the garbageman is out of a job to a robotic arm

One of the many reasons why WA State now has floods…instead of removing the debris in the rivers that clog up the rivers, they now call it channel migration and natural for floods…they stopped removing (dredging) river debris in the late 70′s, then over-permitted for homes in suspect flood plane areas, homes on hillsides etc etc etc. Now they are having to buy out the homes that are hardest hit by the floods as they are afraid of a lawsuit…really…no kidding. And they don’t buy the house at the prevailing cost of building new or what you can sell the home for in the market.
And the FEDS, Corp of Eng who built the levees no longer maintain them…it was part of one of those cost reduction programs that the public wanted and the government granted. LOL They turned them over to the states and the states had no funds and nor did they intend on using the federal funds to maintain the levees…now that may have turned around over the last few massive floods throughout the US…

Not all “green” things are bad (I personally like energy efficient appliances, for example, they save me money on my electricity bill), the artificial non-market driven push for technology nobody is clamoring for is futile at best. There are small markets for these things, natural markets grown as markets should be, by consumer drive, but there is just no large segment of the population clamoring for this stuff.
Politicians simply do not, and have never grasped, the basic market fundamental of supply-and-demand. They‘re not very bright I’m afraid.

Posted on August 17, 2011 at 12:25pmI agree too… I was using CFL’s back in 1996-97 when I bought my townhouse. I did it to save money, those first gen bulbs claimed 7 years and died after 2, but it helps. I have a house now and the whole house as the regular bulbs went out, I replaced them, the 60 watts really don’t put out a good 60, and after 6mos to a year they dim, so I use 75watts – they are still around 14-17watts in usage, so it helps.
I’ve had one bulb where the base cracked open and I was a bit worried, it was a high hat, so I put a plastic bag over it and carefully removed it and put it into another bag to make sure it was save to throw out, the mercury issue is a big one, also what I hate about the bulbs is they all buzz/hum and its annoying at times.
I don’t do it for the planet, the green I go for is more green back in my wallet, if I’m using less energy for the planet, thats a nice by-product, but not my main interest. Same thing down at the pool, I have solar heater panels, not to save the planet, but to save me from several hundred in heating costs to heat the pool…. maybe when the GOP gets in, they can push Green the right way, to save people money first and foremost. If it helps the planet, hey that’s great too.

Now here’s the kicker – the reason the Prius exists is BECAUSE OF THE EV-1 !!! Toyota built it in response to the EV-1 that is thought GM would release. So 15 years and $50Billion later, what do we have? A car that costs twice as much as the Prius with 1/2 the performance and each one sold cost taxpayers $7,600 in sudsidies… nice, really nice…
Just think what the EV-1 would be today with a modern battery system and control module !!!
