SEC Sues Six Former Execs of Fannie and Freddie for Civil Fraud

Fannie and Freddie Execs Sued by SECWASHINGTON (AP) — The Securities and Exchange Commission has brought civil fraud charges against six former top executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, saying they misled the government and taxpayers about risky subprime mortgages the mortgage giants held during the housing bust.

Those charged include the agencies’ two former CEOs, Fannie‘s Daniel Mudd and Freddie’s Richard Syron. They are the highest-profile individuals to be charged in connection with the 2008 financial crisis.

Mudd and Syron led the mortgage giants when the housing bubble burst in late 2006 and 2007. The four other top executives also worked for the companies during that time.

The case was filed in federal court in New York City. Lawyers for Mudd and Syron couldn’t be reached for comment.

According to the lawsuit, Fannie told investors in 2007 that it had roughly $4.8 billion worth of subprime loans on its books. The SEC says that Fannie actually had about $43 billion worth of products targeted to borrowers with weak credit.

Freddie said about 11 percent of its single-family loans were subprime in 2007. The SEC says it was closer to about 18 percent.

“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac executives told the world that their subprime exposure was substantially smaller than it really was,” said Robert Khuzami, SEC’s enforcement director. “These material misstatements occurred during a time of acute investor interest in financial institutions’ exposure to subprime loans, and misled the market about the amount of risk.”

Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee about half of U.S. mortgages, or nearly 31 million loans. The Bush administration seized control of the mortgage giants in September 2008.

So far, the companies have cost taxpayers almost $150 billion – the largest bailout of the financial crisis. They could cost up to $259 billion, according to its government regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Administration.

Frank, Dodd and friends prevented the proposed changes.

      The Goal:
      Increase homeownership rates.

Bill Clinton directed Henry Cisneros to develop:
      The National Homeownership Strategy
      August 1995
      http://www.huduser.org/publications/txt/hdbrf2.txt

      Here is a bit:

“MAKING FINANCING MORE AVAILABLE, AFFORDABLE, and FLEXIBLE. The
inability (either real or perceived) of many younger families to qualify
for a mortgage is widely recognized as a very serious barrier to
homeownership. The National Homeownership Strategy commits both
government and the mortgage industry to a number of initiatives
      designed to:

Cut transaction costs through streamlined regulations and
      technological and procedural efficiences.

Reduce downpayment requirements and interest costs by making
terms more flexible, providing subsidies to low- and
moderate-income families, and creating incentives to save for
      homeownership.

Increase the availability of alternative financing products in housing
      markets throughout the country.”

      “alternative financing products”?
      Wonder what that means?

      Anyway, it worked.
Homeownership rates shot up to record levels.

The FMFM deal should never have happened. This is not only a case where big bisness is useing the tax payer‘s money to line they’er pocket’s.One must reflect on the borrower as well and the fact that there is no way they could pay for the credit they seem to believe what they are told and that is with the help of the lender they can make it work.I mean they (the government)wouldn‘t support the idea with fund’s to stay afloat. But the whole deal was a trap that wayword borrower’s.Someone get‘s the money they lend it to other’s who can’t afford to pay it back. Then the government takes tax dollar’s,of witch the borrower is a party to pay. Then the lender follow’s through with the expected forcloser. So now when all the dust settles and the economy wiggles to a more favorable level and FMFM then sell’s it back to thoughs who trie to buy it back.GEE TALK ABOUT A DOUBLE DIPPING.This though is done right up frount because the wool has allready been pulled over there eye’s.And like sheep, they just go where they are lead.So this is all wrong and head’s should roll. But the fault is not only government because some of the blame fall‘s on the cittisen’s who have let them self’s be douped. So LET’S BE MORE CAREFULL and rememmber there is one born every minuete P.T.Barnom was right and like I said HEAD’S SHOULD ROLL.Even if it be one or two of thoughs running for the nommanation. What are your thought’s

I’m sorry, they must have forgot to add Barney Frank to the list.

The timing of this is quite interesting…almost a Friday docudump when the self-proclaimed one will be out of Washington along with all the corruptocrats in the DC swamp. Interesting also that neither Franklin Raines nor Bawney Fwank are on the list, oh, wait a minute, this is still all part of “We, the Dems, have done nothing wrong, it is all Bush’s fault.” Hmm, but there is still that pesky part of all the video and written records of Bawney both in Congress and in the lamestream media professing that there is not one hint, scintilla, iota of evidence that there are any problems with Fannie of Freddie. Could this be one of the real reasons why he is not running for re-election?

Add Barney Frank to that mix and everyone else who was attached to that debacle no matter what party they belong too. Then break them up, no more “too big to fail”.

Frank’stoo busy having his new deluxe orange jumpsuits custom made and designed by Gucci…lots of travel for fittings, selecting the right shade of orange, imported silk, monograms, appliques, special features, etc.
