‘Second Revolution’ Hits Egypt as Thousands Show Up in Tahrir Square

CAIRO (AP) — Thousands of protesters returned to downtown Cairo’s Tahrir Square Friday for what they called a “second revolution,” calling for Egypt’s military rulers to speed up the pace of democratic reforms in a country that is still charting its political future.
Protesters carried banners reading the “Egyptian revolution is not over” and chanted the slogan.
Christians and Muslims took turns praying in Tahrir Square, as they did in the protests that forced the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak in February. Sectarian clashes have turned deadly since the revolution.
The ruling military warned that “dubious” elements may try to cause chaos during Friday’s protests, and said it would stay clear of the protest area to avoid any friction.
Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian Nobel Peace Prize winner and a reform leader, said that he was “seriously concerned about the absence of security forces.”
The military‘s leadership of the country’s democratic transition has left many protesters dissatisfied.
“I came here because I didn’t feel that Egypt changed,” technician Raafat Hendi said, under huge posters calling for a new constitution.
Some critics accuse the military rulers of collaborating with the former regime and being too lenient in its prosecution of Mubarak, his family and regime members. Mubarak now faces trial on charges of conspiring to kill protesters.
“Our biggest fault is that we left Tahrir Square before seeing Mubarak inside a courtroom being tried,” 24-year-old salesman Ahmed Shawqi said.
Two days before the protest, the prosecutor general ordered Mubarak and his sons to be tried over charges of ordering the killing of protesters during the uprising, along with other charges.
The step was seen as a way to prevent protesters from returning to Tahrir Square.
The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s best organized political force, opposed the protest and called it an attempt to drive a wedge between the military and the people. The Brotherhood’s absence will test the ability of liberal and secular groups to launch their own sustained opposition movement.
Some liberal groups are calling for planned parliamentary elections, now set for September, to be pushed back so that they will have more time to prepare. The Brotherhood, however, stands to make major gains and wants the vote to go ahead.
The protest movement wants to oust the ruling Armed Forces Council and replace it with a civilian council. Protesters accuse the army of using excessive force in cracking down on peaceful protesters since Mubarak’s ouster, sending thousands to military tribunals and detaining young protesters.1
A joint statement by four liberal and secular groups called for postponing the September elections, drafting basic principles that guarantee that Egypt is a civil state and ending military tribunals.
The statement reflects worries of many political groups that the Brotherhood is poised to win a big portion of parliament.
Some protesters are demanding a new constitution prior to elections, a divisive issue.
“We can’t go to elections without having a constitution first,” accountant Ezz Eldin Hamid, 29, said. “You put the plan first then go to the game, not the other way around.”
A referendum that passed in March with the backing of the military and the Brotherhood paved the way for parliamentary and presidential elections. It mandated that the country’s new constitution will be written by a committee selected by the new parliament.
The protest movement fears a growing convergence of opinions between the Islamists and the military.
The Brotherhood, banned in 1954, became a political force after renouncing violence in the 1970s. Eventually it became the most formidable opponent to Mubarak’s regime, though it was still banned as a political party.
When Mubarak fell, the Brotherhood stood ready with a huge network of social services and supporters.

Will some of these countries become radical Islamic states; maybe. Is Egypt heading for a military junta; probably. At least that’s what AFRICOM is planning for.
But let me get this straight. Democracy is good as long as we are handing out with an invasion and as long as its Israeli approved. Anyone else does not get to have it.

There are no moderate Muslims if you cut their Egyptian skin. Mubarak knew this and he surrounded the potential troublemakers with superior force. There can be no democracy in Egypt by revolution. The natural outcome of revolution in Egypt is a military dictatorship or a theocratic military dictatorship. For now, the military out weighs the theocrats. Show trials may be next to satisfy the crowds, but show trials will not feed their bellies. Egypt’s governmental infrastructure is still manned by the kleptocrats that Sadat and Mubarak empowered. If and when they collapse, the real chaos begins. And the Copts had best head for non-Muslim territory.

BHO helps the uprisings by telling Mubarak to leave, then K-daffy, then attacks Lybia (without approval from Congress).
Now, as the MB moves in on the opportunity grab power in this countries (and others), BHO fans the already established hatred for the Jews by bringing up the 67 borders….this is manipulation by BHO to help organize the MB under a well established rally cry. This call by BHO on the 67 borders makes it much, much more likely that the MB will gain power, as it solidifies them, and adds those that share in the hatred of the Jews but otherwise would not have joined in in the MB movement.

Uh… you should realize that the Bakken Field “500 billion” estimate was completely wrong. In 2008 (under the Bush admin, which wanted domestic production, remember), the USGS said there’s about 3.65 billion technically recoverable from there. And we’re already drilling it.
There’s certainly a lot of shale oil in the US, but even assuming high growth assumptions and then overcoming legal and environmental barriers, we’re still 20 years from getting anything decent from it. The US demands oil TODAY, hence why we’re in the Middle East TODAY. Hopefully in 20 years it’ll be different.
Control? Hardly, unless it’s attempting to control oil we can access immediately.

Even Obama’s speech where he vowed to support democracy in the ME was bull; he came right out and said “our short-term interests may conflict with this long-term goal.” Any president will eventually use a justification for their military actions, but the actual reason isn’t ideology, it’s economic benefit for the US.

I fear that I might have been wrong, but I still bear the highest hopes for Egypt. Villians rush to take personal advantage in any area of instability. A vacuum sucks in the good and bad on a tide of opportunity. But this may still turn out well.
The Egyptian military has, for the most part, been trained in and by the USA. This is a big plus and I see sensible restraint (at least in middle terms) from their armed forces, and the potential for a civilised result (again in middle east terms).
I think the the general population is wide awake to the danger of the muslim brotherhood and will, at the end of the day, rebuff them. This is not to say that they are not a potent political force but I think that the media is overstating the risk.
Intelligent people will see the danger. It is the young and ignorant that are been pushed into play by those that would bend religion to their own ends. It will take courageous people to save their own country. They are there, without a doubt, but are there enough of them?

Posted on May 27, 2011 at 2:53pmGenerations of tyranny and oppression. Generations of tribal warring and Islamic dominance. Overthrow the governement of the day, then return 3 months later to cry foul that you dont have your democracy yet? You have no idea how to create a democracy, to build a country where you have real freedom. It takes much more than a few street protests. Its HARD WORK. It takes a life time. These people have no clue. Thats why this will end up in more oppression.

As for Egypt itself… eh. Huzzah for Democracy, but I’d like to see the US sit this one out and let them figure it out for themselves.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Egypt is a democracy?
Huzzah for Democracy? How about Huzzah for a Contitutional Representative Democracy?
Every pure Democracy has failed. Many of us believe the attempts to turn America into a pure Democracy is leading to failure.
America, we must repeal the 17th ammendment, and re-instate the electoral college in the states where they’ve shut it down. We must reinforce States Rights and create a structure where “cooler heads” can prevail.
Posted on May 28, 2011 at 1:20amIf this is what democracy looks like to the left we know they are nuts. This is not democracy you liberal idiots. Would you like it if we pulled this kind of democracy on you lefties? Acting like out of control dirt bags is not anything like democracy nor will it ever be. You ether learn to get along with out killing each other. or one of you got to go. Its just plain nuts to try and get men who act like savages to agree with anyone. Liberalism is a mental disorder just like these “see it my way or ill kill you Muslim nut jobs”. They both need to be controlled or killed for the protection of others. That’s just the way it is. They kill not only Americans but their own people. Sometimes you got to do things you don’t like just to keep your freedoms. Freedom is never free. Its paid for with the blood of people who gave their lives so you could live a cushy life and be free to walk around safe. God bless our troops and this nation. With out them both, there is no freedom.
