MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) – A thief apparently looking to steal copper from equipment on the roof of a Miami-Dade school fell more than two stories, a debilitating plunge that left him unable to walk, apparently with a broken hip or leg.

The hapless Spiderman was captured by security cameras at Charles Wyche Elementary School in Miami Gardens.  He arrives, wearing a ski mask, and begins to arrange ropes he’s carrying for a climb up the outside wall of the school to the roof, more than two stories above.   Moments later a second camera angle shows the man falling to the ground – a drop of more than 25 feet – where he begins to writhe in pain.  The intruder dragged himself out on to a walkway and attempted to stand up, but immediately fell back down.  He then dragged himself on his belly out of the school, pushing a pair of bolt cutters in front of him.

MIAMI (WSVN) — A would-be robber who was wounded during a school burglary has been captured by police, thanks to tips from several 7 News viewers.

On Friday, police located 21-year-old Anthony Pepitone, who is accused of breaking into an elementary school to steal copper wires from the rooftop of the school.

Surveillance cameras were rolling as the masked bandit broke into Charles Wyche Elementary School in Miami Gardens, early last Friday.

According to authorities, Pepitone was on the second story of the building when he suddenly fell to the first floor. The video showed the burglar as he tried to get up and walk, only to fall shortly thereafter. The suspect can be seen slithering out of the school, clearly in pain. “Clearly not a repel master,” said Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief Charles Hurley.

    In Oregon, a few years ago, two idiots decided to steal copper wire from a power substation. They were fried. It knocked the power out for a few hours. Jack-smackers. At least the tax payers didn’t have to pay for their room and board!

    I can understand a lot of the comments posted here, but I would certainly hope after the young man heals his wounds and serves his time he learns that there are many other ways to make money, honestly . Hopefully, this is a positive life changing moment in his life.

    This is obviously the schools fault for placing those enticing cooper parts on top of a dangerous roof. Didn’t they realize that someone could get killed when they try to steal the copper? Do they think that copper tubing is worth someone’s life?     They shouldn’t have arrested this guy … until after he healed. With him in jail, he’s receiving the best medical care the taxpayers can provide. Idiots, you could very easily have arrested him once he was up and around on his own. Just because you CAN arrest someone does not mean that you MUST arrest them.

    Who ever wrote the sub line on the Blaze for this article should start using a dictionary. “Clearly he is not a repel master” The correct term is RAPPEL. The word is derived from French, meaning to recall or return.

    Stealing copper and the “scrapping” business (hauling metal to the junkyard for money) is pretty common with meth users. When people start getting heavy into meth, they are no longer able to maintain their job because the drug takes over their life. When they have no job, they have no money to support their drug habit. They then resort to crime to get money to buy meth. I scream when I hear the talking heads tell us that drug users should not be locked up. Drugs and alcohol are the common denominator in crime. Most people in prison…I’ll go out on a limb and say up to 90%…are there for a drug or alcohol charge, or drugs/alcohol has a role in their crime. For the guy in the video, I would predict he was stealing the copper for drug money. Using, manufacturing, and distribution of drugs has damaging and far reaching effects on individual lives and our society. When I hear people bring up the point about somebody smoking pot in the privacy of their own home is no one’s business because their not hurting anyone, it drives me crazy.

    He must have been pretty desperate to try this stupid crime. I remember hearing, oh, about 3 months ago or so, that thieves had stolen the copper off of the air conditioning units at the top of a Chicago animal shelter. He deserves all the pain that’s coming to him.

    When I lived in Houston thieves would steal air conditioners from the back yard in low rent neighborhoods. I showed a little old lad how to mount fish hooks on the frame… It cured the problem quickly.

      Hey, these thieves are targeting things with copper wire. When people go to sell this copper wiring the buyers need to be stricter on buying it. Thieves are stealing copper wire on our streets right out of the street lights.

    The next day a jury of his peer’s views the video and finds him guilty. That night while he is sleeping in his cell a guard fires one round into his head. The next day he is buried. Justice served. This nations existance depends upon the swift removal of it’s criminal element to survive. If we do not do the hard things, we will lose our country. Harsh? Not at all. Harsh is Russia. No peer’s review your crime on video, only a government official. A bullet to the head just the same, only we won’t bill your family for the bullet. Sounds fair to me.       the over crowding of our prison system.We would not have to make
      that many trips on the large cargo planes and clean out the prisons.
