‘Security Concerns’: Wisconsin Legislature Forced to Adjourn Over Protester Dangers

Wisconsin Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald reportedly moved to adjourn the Assembly Friday evening after Gov. Scott Walker urged caucus and staff members to leave the building in fear for their safety as protesters continued to march at the capitol building.
Fitzgerald told WisPolitics about Walker’s request after the Assembly ended a tense, 30-minute floor session.
“As the Republicans made moves to pass the controversial budget repair bill without Dem participation, a throng of thousands of protesters outside the chamber grew louder and louder,” the blog site writes. “There have been reports of threats against lawmakers throughout the week, and Fitzgerald was escorted out of the building by sheriff deputies.”
Nevertheless, the Republican legislators reaffirmed their commitment to pass the controversial budget measure next week.
“The leadership of the Assembly has decided to recess due to security concerns. We will reconvene on Tuesday morning and are confident that the security concerns will no longer exist. We are committed as ever to pass Governor Walker’s Budget Repair Bill and will do so next week,” the statement reads. “Millions of taxpayers spoke in November and we will not let them down. We have a fiscal crisis that can’t be ignored. We have the votes to pass the bill; it is only a matter of time.”
In the meantime, rumors are swirling that tea party activists are circulating recall petitions to oust absent Democrats who fled the state to avoid a vote.
Daniel Hunt of Kenosha announced that a group to recall Sen. Robert Wirch of Pleasant Prairie would file papers with the Government Accountability Board next week.
“We need to inform Robert Wirch that his hiding in Illinois is unacceptable to the voters in his district, and that we are taking the first steps to remove him from office,” Hunt said in a statement.
Meanwhile, an Eagle River-based group said it expected to file with the GAB by the close of business today. The group’s statement alleges Holperin “has failed to carry out his official duties in the state Senate,” and committee leader Kim Simac said activists would evaluate the recall effort over the weekend.
Both groups touted the abilities of local Tea Party groups to “mobilize thousands of people quickly and effectively.”

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 7:10amThe unions belong to the same party that just lost 63 of their own in the 2010 election, They are in panic mode, they will stop at nothing, they have yet to come to terms of that election. The left puts into action the very things they blame others for doing and of course with-out any proof. The chickens are coming home to roost! Just how violent will the union’s get? America will soon see the violence the unions are capable of and are willing to promote!

I’m also asking HIM to “put a watch before your lips”. That was a bit of family humor when we had teens in the house: their father would say, “LORD, put a watch before our lips” and hold his watch in front of his mouth. Of course, they would roll their eyes. That’s what parents and teens do. Guess you had to be there to think it was funny. However, it things get scary or rowdy, somebody do that….. just hold up your watch and place it before your lips. The battle is the LORD’s and HE is going to win it. We just need to stand. Will be with you in heart and spirit and prayer this day! THANK YOU FOR STANDING UP for all of us AMERICANS!!! GOD BLESS AND PROTECT IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN!

If every taxpayer refused to pay another cent in taxes, they would all be up a creek without a paddle.

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 7:47amI live in Wisconsin and consider our schools very good. (I have 3 teenagers!). This demonstration makes me extremely angry and I hope Scott Walker has the courage to stick this out. It is only the beginning of taking our country back. Almost every other family in America has been required to tighten the belt when it comes to spending. The teachers should not be exempt from helping to fix this economy in crisis. In the private sector, all these lying employees would be fired. But, you can’t even fire the bad teachers because of their tenure. I know plenty of people that would jump at the salary and benefits the teachers are being offered. (Average salary and benefits = $89K for 175 days of teaching. That equates to $132K for 260 calendar weekdays). My suggestion is to let them quit if they don’t like it (or fire them immediately), give a grace period for well qualified people to get their teaching certificate, and you will have better teachers in the long run. Teachers that want and appreciate their jobs.
When I spoke to a state worker this week, they shared with me that they were sick last year and had $200K in medical bills. They paid NOTHING in premiums, or deducibles, or co-pays. $0!!!!!! No wonder our state is bankrupt. Time to pay your fair share and join the real world the rest of us live in.

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 1:16am@Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra,
“By the way, why are unions good?”
The basis for Unions is that workers deserve particular things from their employers beyond not being mistreated. But the thing that’s wrong with the Union thinking is they somehow do not include employers as “workers”, and they also somehow don’t think employers deserve to keep what THEY worked for.
It’s a double standard.
And while they might have used the courts to bring their supposedly abusive employers to justice, the Progressives have actually screwed those up too so that the Judicial system is no longer about the principles on which laws are based, but about how easy it is to read different meanings into the words of the law.

The Governor should stay calm and be patient.
The Governor should gather info and evidence about teacher’s (and state employees) lying about being sick (violating their collective bargaining agreement), and seek to recapture (or not distribute) pay that was not earned. That will help the budget deficit too!!
The Governor should seek sanctions against the Union for an unauthorized work stoppage. That will help the budget deficit too!!

In New zealand, in the early 50′s, our watersiders unions held the country to ransom. They demanded outrageous concessions in order that our exports be loaded onto ships. The prime minister, after negotiaons were exhausted, sent in the army. We haven’t had that kind of trouble since.
Britian had a similar battle with the coalminer‘s union in the early 80’s and eventually won.
Both battles were traumatic on a national basis, but both had to be won for the sake of each nation. If Wisconsin gives up on this one, the battle will eventually have to be fought further down the track and it will be even worse.

Report Post »Exactly. My Dad was a union member all of his life, in the early 80′s, he was being laid off, knew it, and 2 months before his union dues for the year was due, the union came in as “Gauranteed him a JoB”. But for him to get that job, he needed to pay his dues for the year. Now my dad, his dues were based on the salary he made, a percentage, and being as he was about to be laid off, it would be a few thousand dollars. Real money in the 80′s. He pressed his union rep on what the Guarnteed job is, it just so happened a job in Alaska working on the Pipeline. That is the same job my Dad had turned down years before and had no desire to take. But all the union wanted was their money, they didn’t care if they were taking money or food away from him or his family, they just wanted their money. He got a job in another state, without the unions help, and after he took that job, 2 months later, guess who came knocking on the door, even though the job wasn’t union…..you got it, his old union. Their pitch is, even though this isn’t a union job, and a right too work state, we are going to come in and unionize…..If you are smart, you will pay your dues and be our union stewart. He refused, the workers refuted their attempts, and after a year, they still came back wanting their dues. Growing up, all I ever seen the union as is legalized Mob Bosses. They will strong arm the little guy, strong arm the bosses, and pay off politicians who will dance to their tune. In the 30′s, we called them Nazi’s, in the 50′s we called them commies, now, they are just Czars.

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 6:05amOK, I think I’ve got it now.
Employees have to vote for collective bargaining every year. If less than 51% votes for it you can’t collectively bargain.
You cannot collectively bargain for anything except your income, that excludes perks and side benefits, I suppose.
If you vote the union out, they can’t come back in for another year.
Agreements are limited to one year.
You don‘t have to pay dues if you don’t want to and you can still be included in the collective bargaining. (My god! No wonder the unions are so upset!)
Certain occupations are exempt (Cops, fire, etc)
There, I think I’ve cracked it. Perhaps we need lawyers after all… Oh perish the thought….
Report Post »nzkiwi
Posted on February 19, 2011 at 6:35amTo sum up; they have not banned collective bargaining, but they have eviscerated the unions.
And that is no bad thing, in my humble opinion. Now the unions will have to prove their worth on an annual basis, and they can’t hold your job to ransom in demanding their dues.
Oh, I forgot. Employers can no longer be required to pay your dues for you. Another nice touch.

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 1:04pmIn 1987, I took a better job (welder/machinist) that had more to offer. They said I HAD to join the union to take the job. Never been a union member before. On several occasions, I was informed to slow down on my fabrications, that I was working too fast. I worked the job for one month when I was ‘laid off’. Never got any calls from them regarding getting my job back, but I was getting frequent notifications about continuing my union dues. When I found out that they had brought in someone else to replace me, it became very clear that what they were doing was increasing the union membership. The next time I was contacted about union dues, I told them to ‘stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.’
Never been a member of a union since, never want to be, never will be. They can kiss my arse. I saw very clearly what the union is, was, and want to be.
I do pray that people wake up and realize what the union is and what their goals are. Union members are nothing more than ‘puppets’ and they will cast you aside for one fleeting second of momentum gain.

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 1:06pmI assume the concern is for those protesting from the left, namely the union activists (and the homeless people they have hired to fill their ranks.) The Tea Partiers have the right to counter protest, but I’m afraid they will be blamed if anything goes awry. This will be the argument: “Until the Tea Partiers showed up, everything was fine.” and it will be a narrative most on the left will believe. The Tea Partiers should protest elsewhere or stay away all together. The protesters are making the case for us with their stupidity and hateful rhetoric, and most of America is sided against them.

Thank you brother. I have a much better understanding … much better than any news source has provided. I wonder why this was so hard for me to find … I suppose “internet noise” on the subject. I was even on the Wisconsin Legislature‘s website and didn’t find it … so I thank you.
I don’t think “Union’s-rights” are mentioned anywhere in our constitution … and had they been mentioned, it would have been to limit them. Upon this, we would all agree.
A thought for the union members: … We citizens have a contract with our government and it’s to uphold the constitution and the rights granted to us by our creator, and to limit the reach and power of the government which is granted solely by we who are governed (i.e. “us”). Our contract pre-dates yours. Grow-up. Put your “skin in the game” as your fearless leader says.

Posted on February 19, 2011 at 6:23pmAll the big unions in the past use to be under the control of organized crime. Now they‘re under the control of Communist’s. Don’t the people who are members of these unions realize that? If they do realize it then they are Communist’s and are my enemy. I am an American and a Patriot and I am ready to cancel, by force, their citizenship.

Wisconsin, and America for that matter, can absolutely not afford to lose this fight.
Do not give up, Wisconsin. Nothing less than your whole economic future depends apon it.
I 100% agree with you. This is like a mother telling her four-year-old “no” 3-4 times, then finally giving in to stop that kid from throwing a fit. What does that child learn? If he screams loudly and often enough, he gets his way. What SHOULD have happened was what my mom would say: “keep that up and I’ll give you something to cry about!” And guess what? It worked. I learned my mom was no one to fool with, and no meant no. The Governor should NOT be patient, but instead punish those responsible. Like Reagan did with the air traffic controllers. Fire every single teacher calling in sick without a legitimate doctor’s excuse.

Posted on February 20, 2011 at 4:07pmIsn’t it just like Socialists to want to ram their agenda down your throat when they have power, but want to take their ball and go home when they can’t have their way? Sort of lends a new meaning to the word: Coward.

Happy to help. Sorry about my mental ramblings. One small point; it is not “our” constitution, it is yours. I’m a New Zealander.
In my humble opinion, it is the finest document ever written and the sole reason while a nation of only 320 million people is pre-eminent in the world.
Protect it with everything that you have.
