Security Guard Describes Having to Shoot Fla. Gunman: ‘I’m Not a Hero’

Mike Jones, the former police officer who shot Florida school board gunman Clay Duke, hosted an emotional press conference on Thursday, admitting that the decision to fire back at Duke was an agonizing one and saying, “I’m not a hero.” He explained that he was not supposed to be in the meeting that night, but felt he should go anyway:

A hero is one who does the right thing without regard to his own well-being. This man’s actions were heroic, without a doubt.

On another note, I am dismayed that this is causing a lot of talk about changing security procedures for meetings like this. Doubtless, Mr. Jones will not have his gun with him at the next meeting.

I guess that just makes it alright for us to be victims instead of heroes in the future.

Sounds like he carried a gun all those years hoping he would never have to use it. I found it touching that he was worried about the legal ramifications of shooting the shooter in the back…

On a broader note (and realizing that he wasn’t going to be there originally), I wonder if anyone has had their minds changed on armed vs. unarmed guards.

And someone is already looking to tighten the gun laws in response to the perpetrator. Any opportunity to chase an ambulance…

    Merry Christmas… RT

Is it fair that he gets ALL the credit?

He deserves credit, but what about the idea that the government has restricted our ability to bear arms to the degree that one of the brave people who sat calmly staring down the barrel of death couldn’t have popped up behind that bench and hit that big fat stupid wide target a solid 3 times before he hit the ground, and all those people who could’ve died were solely dependent at the time on one lone elderly security guard?

One can easily determine by watching the video that Mr. Jones, in fact, advanced and attacked the gunman in the face of continuing fire directed at him. In the video, as the gunman went down after being struck by Mr. Jones first few rounds, he raised his weapon and continued firing toward the rear of the room where Mr Jones was positioned. It was only after that occurred that the gunman realized his event was over and he put the weapon to his own head and fired.

Mr. Jones, you are in fact a hero in this case. You placed yourself in peril to defend the lives of others. There is no higher calling of a man in any circumstance.

Yes.. you may stop someone from killing others or yourself, but you have to live with the emotional, legal, financial and social consequences of what you’ve done. We’re fortunate there are many Mike and “Mary” Jones in this nation. They‘re the nation’s silent guards that keep us all a little safer by counterbalancing such situations .

DTitus: What Stevsea is saying is that there is a reason why things happen. It was not a coincidence that Jones went to that meeting despite being told he didn’t have to. His purpose for going, cosmically, was to stop Duke from killing innocent people.

Whether you believe in God, or have some other spiritual belief, it is human nature to find reason in things. As a Christian, I call what happened in that auditorium a miracle. At point blank range, Duke missed. At that range, an average marksman can easily bullseye a coke can, but he missed. Then, a man who had no reason to be present ended the confrontation without loss of life, except for that of the gunman himself.

Some would call it a coincidence, but as for me, I think only one person was meant to die that day, and that person was Duke. So, I guess I agree with Stevsea.

The handbag hitting was liberal. It’s not the handbag lady that is necessarily liberal; she was actually very brave. My husband said, “She should have used a bigger bat.” The liberals want good guys to not have guns. They want us to either not fight back against the bad guys (”Let’s rehabilitate him.”), or the liberals want us to use other things for weapons, or we are supposed to sit on our hands until the police surround the building and decide to not come in, yet. Does that help you to see why the handbag hitting was the only thing the liberals leave as an option? With laws restricting gun ownership, only bad guys have guns. So, yes, the handbag hitting was liberal. The good guy stopping the bad guy was the better thing.

If you’re trained in responsible firearm possession, when the time comes to defend yourself or another, the act of having to do so won’t be as mentally agonizing. Proper training allows a person to make the correct choice (whether to shoot or retreat) in the event of an emergency situation.

The guard did his job, and should be acknowledged for taking the correct and necessary action. Period. The fact that the gentleman is being humble about the whole event is icing on the cake.

      Bottom line:

      Responsibility (1)
      Progressive Irresponsibility (0)

Anytime you shoot someone, even if justified, the police will have to take you in to get the story. You may even have to endure a lengthy investigation and court proceedings according to state law in criminal and or civil courts. When you take a conceal carry class and I encourage everyone to do this, you will be exposed to all kinds of scenarios and learn how the law looks at this in your state. If he had mistakenly hit one of the other people, then he might have been sued civilly for wanton-endangerment. Obviously the board members were thankful that he did what he did and he was legally justified in taking action that protected others from immanent harm. I am sure Mr. Jones, having been in law enforcement, was well aware of all these specific laws. It says alot for his professionalism and intelligence that he was able to even process the scenario. Way to care about other first, Mr. Jones…….and go lady with the pocket-book! Yep, I’m proud to call them my American brother and sister.
