The incredible image taken above captured the city of Christchurch, New Zealand just seconds after a massive earthquake hit earlier this week, and gives an eerie glimpse of the devastation that would ensue. Additionally, security footage from inside some local convenience store captured the quake as it rocked the city:
Rescuers fanned out into unchecked areas of New Zealand’s quake-devastated city Thursday looking for any remaining life in the rubble, as the death toll rose to 98 with “grave fears” that many of the 226 missing are dead.
Police said up to 120 bodies may still lie trapped in the tangled concrete and steel that was the Canterbury Television or CTV building, where dozens of students from Japan, Thailand, China and other Asian countries were believed buried when an English-language school collapsed along with other offices. Twenty-three bodies were pulled from the building Thursday, but not immediately identified.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 6:16pmNew Zealand has not aligned with China, what are you thinking “@republic” ? It’s a democracy, capitalist with a slight socialist bent. Australia has helped a lot as they are the closest neighbor but you won’t read that in any American paper or website, try Sydney morning herald…

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 11:04amThis is not a political event, as yet, except to say that the POTUS is again silent. This is just a natural disaster that needs a response to assist those in need, whether that be prayer or aid. Guess we will have to see if the US gov. response is as agressive as for those in Haiti. Certainly there are private and non-profit organizations that will mobilize, and may God provide for them through people like us. My prayers go out, even now.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 10:36amI have friends in New Zealand and hope and pray that they are OK. As to being aligned with China it seems almost like we are also. Everything you pick up is made there. They almost own us.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 10:27amNew Zealand is not the safest place…there are several active volcanoes there as well. If it were me, I think I would consider moving to Australia.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 8:42amHow much aide has Obama promised New Zealand? Where are the ex presidents lined up to take donations for New Zealand? Where are the telethons for New Zealand? Has the POTUS even mentioned it? Is there not enough pigmentation in the New Zealanders to garner Obama’s sympathy?

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 9:06amThis reply is not intended to take away from the need for help, but I believe that politically speaking New Zealand has aligned themselves with China, so I will be interested in seeing what China does to help.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 9:23pmThe only alignment New Zealand has with China is a free trade deal. How long have we been waiting for a free trade deal with America? over 20 years?

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 8:01amMy God, to see such devastation is bad enough; I could never imagine what it must have been like to go through, and then the rebuilding to take place in the future. I wish them the best of luck and may the Lord look after them, and grace them with his blessings in the days and months ahead.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 8:12amNature has certainly been busy this last year and there are times when I wonder if God is bowing His back in response to what is going on in the world. Pray for all who are still missing, for the parents who sent their children to school in good faith, only to have them snatched away, and for the rescue teams who have amazing strength to do that job.

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 8:29amGrandmaof5, morning, all is good here, finally getting the place back to normal after new rugs put in on tuesday. The earth indeed is shaking and groaning, it may be this is one more sign of the return of the Lord will soon be at hand, That is a thought both thrilling and chilling at the same time, thrilled to be close to the time, and chilled for what still is to come in the world.
