The footage coming out of Japan is breathtaking. The Associated Press is reporting at least 60 dead and another 56* missing after a magnitude 8.9 quake rocked Japan on Friday. The death toll is expected to rise considering the 23 ft. tsunami that accompanied the rattling.
Japan even issued a state of emergency at a nuclear power plant after its cooling system had a mechanical failure. Trouble was reported at two other nuclear plants as well, but there was no radiation leak at any.
Below is footage compiled by the Associated Press showing the moment the quake hit Japan:
*The death toll as well as the number of missing have been updated.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 3:04pmAt 1:36 in the first film above… you can see a very touching moment in a scene of chaos.
A man appears to have his arm around an older man, apparently protecting the elder, while simultaneously appearing to support himself or support some object nearby from falling.
People helping people. Respect for elders. Very nice.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 1:31pm‘See Footage of the Moment the 8.9 Quake hit Japan” reads this headline but with this earthquake on Japan there looms another crisis that will directly impact the US.At around 850 Billion dollars, Japan is the world’s second largest holder of US debt. With this enormous crisis hitting Japan costing life and putting pressure on a tepid economy, I fear the worst that Japan may call for some if not most of the US dept be paid.
Report Post »If this happens, along with the Middle Eastern crisis, then any minuscule hope of a recovery will vanish, only to be replaced with a further rapid deceleration into a full fledged crash of our economy. The headlines could easily be translated to “The moment the earthquake hit Japan and the US economy”

Posted on March 14, 2011 at 9:52pmt’s “Jishin”. “ji” means the ground, “shin” means shaking. Pronounced, I believe, Jee sheen’, but not positive on pronunciation.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 10:50amThat first image reminds me of a song: “Shake, shake, shake! Shake, shake, shake! Shake your booty!”
That shaking brings back memories of two earthquakes I experienced in Ecuador and Colombia. We were literally shaken from our beds one morning at 3 am. It was so strong we couldn’t stand on our feet. When it calmed down, we went outside and the telephone poles continued shaking like reeds in the wind. It destroyed an entire coastal town in Columbia called Tumbaco. The other one, we were on the 7th floor of an apartment building. Someone told us to all kneel down and pray. I thought, “Wouldn’t it be better to seek cover or ESCAPE while we pray?”

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 10:16amPrayers to everyone in Japan and in the paths of the tsunamis. One thing that impressed me, The buildings sure seem built better in Japan than other parts of the world. If that quake hit in in the usa it would have leveled a lot of buildings.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 10:05amI read a story yesterday where scientists say that on March 18th Moon will be the closest to Earth than it has been in 18 years. The scientist say being so close can cause great earthquakes, tidal waves and bad weather due to the gravitational pull.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 9:54amWhen I was 8 years old I was in the 6.6 magnitude Sylmar Quake in L.A. 50+ people died. Most of those when a veterans hospital collapsed along with some freeway overpasses. Even though our house was in south-central L.A. and the quake was centered in the San Fernando Valley the shaking was quite strong. I will never forget the dimension of sound. Shaking and rattling in my bedroom and rumbling as far as my ear could hear. Very surreal.
I say all that to say this. An 8.9 quake is more than 100 times stronger than a 6.6! Japan not only suffered devastating damage from the main quake, but 15 aftershocks were greater than magnitude 6.0. The 30 foot Tsunami seems to have claimed the most victims, much like the 1964 quake that hit Anchorage.
Prayers for the people of Japan.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 10:03amYou simply cannot comment on a tragedy without plugging in some ridiculous b.s. about how the “left” will use this for their advantage. You disrespect the victims AND 1/2 the population with idiocy like that. But it’s what should be expected on this forum. Pathetic.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 1:15pmBut the Left will exploit it. Everything is exploited for political purposes by the left. It’s simply what people who use government to take from their neighbors are wired to do: All disasters are an opportunity to expand government diminish individual liberty. Just watch and listen. The day will not be over before someone blames this on petroleum production or global warming or something, anything, that calls for higher taxes and more government oversight.
Never let a good crisis go to waste.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 8:11am@GONZO ~~ Japan above all other countries is well built to withstand serious earthquakes. It this is doing that much damage there, you can know for certain that anywhere else in the world would already be flattened. GOD BLESS the people and the animals and the fish and the birds. I cannot fathom this level of destruction.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 8:08am@N37BU6 We have experienced a 6.3 quake which was enough! I cannot imagine the horror of one of this magnitude. Posted on March 11, 2011 at 9:45amI was in the 1989 7.1 loma prieta earthquake in San Francisco about a mile from the freeway that collapsed. It started out as a little bumping up and down which made us smile and then it cut loose and got extremely violent moving in one direction 4-5 feet and then the other direction. It was 21 seconds of sheer terror. When the one thing you can count on to stay in the same place everyday starts to move and you can no longer count on it to be stable it really messes with your head.
Report Post »In the case of that quake the media made it look like the entire bay area was destroyed which was not even close to the truth. Keep in mind they focus only on the worst damage.

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 8:09amEven with all the reporting and helicopter video, it’s hard to grasp the enormity of this. The scenes are only bits and bites of the damage. The scope is the entire coast line that’s exposed to the wave, not to mention other islands and even continents. This looks like it could make Katrina look like Saturday morning in the kiddie pool.

The answer to the last sentence is, NOT LONG! I’ve already seen accusations of another HAARP-caused event! However unlikely that may be, given what HAARP actually can do, such accusations are not entirely out of the question. We have reached levels of technology combined with such a low point in and human political perfidy, that it’s difficult for even sane, level-headed people to totally ignore such possibilities. God help us!

Posted on March 11, 2011 at 6:30pmokay haven’t read everything here so someone might of brought this up. Why are we talking about the possible hundreds that may have been killed, instead of the millions that weren’t killed by this 8.9 quake, the biggest since 1900 because Japan had built there infra structure to sustain it. Looks like there is something to be learned here.
