See Joe Biden Make the ‘Sign of the Cross’ In Front of…1,600 Conservative Rabbis

Vice President Joe Biden is known for his verbal outbursts, inappropriate commentary and occasional factual flaps. Over the weekend, he referred to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney as “President Romney.” This, of course, is only the latest example that we’ve shared. As The Blaze’s Jon Seidl has noted, he’s made other epic gaffes here, here, and here.
Earlier today, Biden added yet another odd gesture — one that was likely intended to be a joke — to his arsenal of odd quips and gestures. Before addressing the annual convention of The Rabbinical Assembly, an international organization comprised 1,600 conservative rabbis, Biden made the “sign of the cross.”
As the individual introducing him spoke about the more than three decades Biden served in the U.S. Senate, the vice president, who was standing behind him, made the sign of the cross. The audience subsequently erupted with laughter, as Biden walked over to the man introducing him and said, “Thirty-six years…that’s a long time…I’m getting old.”
Considering that this gesture is Christian in nature — and in seeing that Biden was in front of a massive audience of Jewish faith leaders — it’s certainly a noteworthy occurrence. Now, either Biden considered the context and forged on or he made the hand motions without thinking. Either way, it’s entertaining to watch.

During his address, Biden defended Israel and claimed that the Obama administration is working feverishly to come up with mechanisms to contain Iran.

Many American Jews are not Zionists, they don’t object to Israel, but they have no interest is being anything more than a tourist to Israel. Israel doesn’t define their faith or their lives or their loyalty. A lot of the people who “stand with Israel” the most, only do so because the Bible tells them (or at least they‘ve been told that’s what the Bible says) that Israel must exist for the Messiah to come back and rescue the good Christians from the Apocalypse. But those same people don’t really know any Jews and they fail to understand how Jews think (which usually scares Jews plenty, evoking as it does the history of their persecution).

The Catholic church has a history of forcing conversions, a fact that is a sensitive area for those Jews whose ancestors came from Eastern Europe (Polish and Russian anti-Semitism is legendary and in pre-Revolution days, the Czar forced Jewish boys who were drafted into the army to convert or be jailed as traitors.) I’m sure the rabbis were gracious, but this is another Bidenism that qualifies him as a doofus on display.

This Jewish audience knew he was Catholic, they also know that as a Catholic, he appreciates tradition, ritual, and liturgy, just like they do. I get on quite well with Jewish groups and many Rabbis that I have known have found kindred spirits with Catholic priests.

I attended Temple with them for decades. I’ve had some very, very interesting discussions with both Jews and Catholics, Rabbis and Priests. There is a great deal of common ground between the two groups, tradition, respect for ritual, liturgy and nuance of faith. If the Rabbis weren’t offended, why were you?

Admiral Mike Mullen, also a Catholic, put his hand on his shoulder and told him to keep it up until they were landed on the ship. Mike Mullen also supports Gays. He was behind the withdrawl of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. I have it on good authority, that he used to invite the partners of Gay staffers to his home for parties and dinners with the same hospitality as he gave to straight couples.

Catholic and Jewish issues, living in a mixed marriage as I do, are one of them. My daughters are proud to be CAshEWS, but they attend Temple on Fridays with their father. I grew up on the West Coast, in small towns. I attend Mass each week. I have a Bachelors in History from a state college. I used to teach, and I spent ten years living on military bases in Asia. The love of my life is a nice Jewish boy, a bit of a nebbish even, my college sweetheart. Now, if you can show me where I have said something different, please, by all means post it. Show everybody where I am lying. I don’t lie; it‘s too hard to lie and it’s a sin…the Catholic Church taught me that.

I happened to attend the Navy Expo, where I heard Mike Mullen speak (I was about 100 feet from the stage in a huge ballroom.) I am not a political operative. I am covered by the Hatch Act. My living in the Beltway has allowed me to see quite a number of things for myself. Including the 9/12 rally. I have visited Congressional offices on a number of occasions…it’s a Metro ride away.

When I was in Junior High, I learned that the ancient Romans and Egyptians had laws against abortion, but they also had methods of inducing them. Women have been choosing abortions for as long as there have been women and pregnancies. Most women never have an abortion. Most women that I know, never really wanted one, but chose it as a last resort, the least bad of the choices at that time. I don’t know what is in their hearts; it isn’t my place to judge them. And the women that I know who made that choice, know they will have to answer for it sooner or later. I would never have an abortion, I raised two daughters and they would never have one, either. Catholicism and Judaism both place a great deal of emphasis on the formation and discernment of conscience and taking responsibility for the choices one makes in life.

Well, yes, you do have to pass a bill to find out what will go into it. You might want to watch Schoolhouse Rock and listen to Bill. They did not use reconcilliation to pass Obamacare, it passed on a straight vote. And if you find “Deem and Pass” so objectionable, why don’t you ask Mitch McConnell and John Boehner why the Republicans used it so often? Same thing with the Senate Filbuster. I was on The Hill the day before Obamacare passed. I saw and heard some really ugly stuff coming from TeaCons. I talked to staffers. I heard about how rude and nasty these upstanding, patriotic, Christians were being. There is a YouTube video where a Congressman wipes his cheek and walks away. When Obama signed the bill into law he crowed about it coming in under $1trillion per the CBO. And only recently the CBO released a revised report saying it will now cost $1.76 trillion. In roughly two years the costs have nearly doubled…and the “treats” haven’t even kicked in yet.
How about this one? Obamacare penalizes physician owned hospitals if they expand or build new locations. Why TOKYROSE? Perhaps the AHA (American Hospital Association) -read: heavily unionized..bringing us back to you TOKYOROSE- and their input has something to do with it? Wonderful idea, take away patient choice and kill jobs at the same time.

Most Catholics who know me, think I’m a good Catholic, and most Jews who know me, know that I am a sincere student.
