BRISTOL, TN - AUGUST 25: Tony Stewart, driver of the #14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet, races along side of Matt Kenseth, driver of the #17 Valvoline NextGen Ford, during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series IRWIN Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 25, 2012 in Bristol, Tennessee. Tony Stewart used to have an image as the bad boy of NASCAR. Lately, he’s toned it down. But on Saturday he may have regained his throne after he got into an accident that ended with him tossing his helmet at the other driver.
During a race at the notorious Bristol Motor Speedway, Stewart and fellow driver Matt Kenseth were fighting for the lead when they started bumping each other. One too many bumps led to a wreck that essentially ended both of their chances at a win.
Whose fault was it? According to Steward, it was Kenseth’s. And we know that because as Kenseth was traveling down pit road later, Stewart took off his helmet, wound up, and heaved his helmet right at the hood of Kenseth. “Perfect strike,” as the announcer said:
And just in case Stewart hadn’t made his displeasure clear, he vowed after the race to “run over him [Kenseth] every chance I get for the rest of the year.”
As for the helmet collected by NASCAR officials on pit road? “The hell with the helmet,” he said.
Kenseth was confused with Stewart’s anger, claiming he gave Stewart room earlier to avoid a wreck and Stewart didn’t do the same.
“I guess he just wanted to do all the taking, so that’s where we ended up,” Kenseth said, adding the two had incidents this season at Sonoma and Indianapolis, and Stewart refused to speak to him about the Indy accident.
“I just said `OK, that’s fine. I’m just going to race you the same way you race me,’” Kenseth said.
As for Stewart’s threat to wreck Kenseth the rest of the year, Kenseth didn’t seem concerned.
“Look, Tony is probably the greatest race car driver in the garage. I don’t really have anything bad to say about Tony,” Kenseth said, adding he was expecting the helmet throw.

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 4:02pmThis is one of the reasons i don’t bother watching NASCAR anymore. Tony Stewart is nothing but a spoiled little *****! I‘m looking forward to one of his childish tantrums ending with a good beat down from some other driver who’s also fed up with his arrogant, childish attitude. He behaves for a while, than pulls another stunt like this, and NASCAR lets him get away with it every time. Also, when he does this crap, he’s wearing sponsor logos, and i for one will remember who’s paying him millions in sponsorship funds when i go shopping!

At least give the NHL credit for not doing the same to Tim Thomas.

Nothing will come of this just like the Nationwide Race where Austin Dillon wrecked tow different drivers and one had to be intentional because you could see him turn his wheels to him.Nascar is great at picking and choosing, therefore they are no different than wrestking.

Way too many immature ego’s out on the track. Trouble is, the rules allow all the bumping which leads to wrecks – which causes injuries and sometimes death. Need a full revamp.

As far as NASCAR, I don’t watch any more either. Since the Car of Tomorrow they are all the same, just different decals. I loved the days of old when the frames bodies and motors were based on the named manufacturer. Further, Dodge is pulling out of NASCAR again. Just as well, it is a Fiat now. Come to think of it, Fiat, just like our currency and constitutional republic.
We need to take our country back, including NASCAR.

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 12:18pmFirst off, NASCAR is not racing! I have not a problem with fan enthusiasm for this spectacle, but for the love of all that is holy, it is NOT racing…this proves it.
Secondly, actually take the time to candidly talk to a driver and the frustration oozes from their every word. These men were meant to race, not set themselves up for wrecks…which is how this event is meant to unfold….nothing more than glamorized demolition derby…..who the hell bumps during a contest and calls that “racing”….WTF?
NASCAR is the antithesis to actual skilled racing; it’s where F1 drivers go to retire….again, no disrespect to the fans.

I have.
I have also taken the time to research actual driver thoughts and opinions on the way the “sport” is set up. They are pissed. They are there for the paycheck, but they are still pissed at the way the “sport” is engineered for sponsors and viewership. It is dangerous and that has very little to do with racing, but rather the gimmicks that are imposed on these men and their teams.
That makes it not only a joke, but a very serious and dangerous joke. Every new imposition put on these teams sends them through the roof with indignation and fury.

I have talked to track owners, team owners, pit crews, drivers, etc. and am on a first name basis with many of them. THEY LOVE THEIR CAREERS. Every single one of them. They love everything about their sport from top to bottom, with a very few exceptions which are meant to keep the races competitive.
Knowing this as well as I do causes me to doubt your credibility. I think you are an elitist blowhard who is fabricating anecdotal evidence to back up your arrogance and contempt. I also think you‘re jealous of NASCAR’s popularity, and it bothers the hell out of you that more people don’t see it your way.

Do they love the industry that has provided that job? Hell yes.
But to say that these guys are all ga-ga over the stupid reg’s put on them and their cars is a crock of homemade doo-doo…..it’s not true if it ever was. Which when you state it as fact makes me doubt your conveyance even more.
And to state a difference of opinion from your own does not make me an elitist, but it sure makes a convenient hand full of mud when some one differs with you doesn’t it. No facts, just come out swinging with vacant insults…..right from the lefty play book.

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 2:03pmSorry, I call BS Florida. It is evident just from reading your post that you have no interest in NASCAR AND you don’t “research” the drivers. In it for the money? Are you kidding? Dale Jr’s manager (K. Earnhardt) came to him about his contract with Hendrick earlier this year. You know what he told her? “sign whatever they propose, I just want to race cars.” Ya, he is in it for the money. You don’t have a clue and you are of the same NASCAR intelect as the ones that say NASCAR is about driving in circles. These guys race to win the championship and as Kyle Petty once said, “Don’t tell our owners this, but we would probably drive these cars for free.”

I call BS, and say that you miss the point entirely just as wool did/does.
And to compare Petty to today’s NASCAR is plain ignorant and shows how little you have paid attention to the evolution (devolution) of the sport I grew up with and loved “as a child”…and for Junior’s sake, he is in a financial position to solely focus on his job, and not negotiations…he wins either way. Grow up.
You guys are way naive and defensive.

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 2:31pmOkay, all of these drivers come out every week for a paycheck. That makes total sense. Austin and Ty Dillon think about nothing more than making millions in NASCAR, not winning a championship in the premier division someday. Jeff Gordon continues to drive week-to-week in order to support his family. Elliot Sadler continues to work his way through the Nationwide series so he can someday collect a paycheck like Dale Jr. You are wrong. Money is a factor, but is not the driving (forgive the pun) force behind why these kids work their way into the NASCAR division. Danica Patrick did not throw away a comfortable position driving INDY cars to drive in NASCAR for the money. These guys and gals do it for the challenge, they love to race and they get paid doing it. If you watch the sport, the interviews, and are intimately involved as a fan, it is undeniable.

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 3:18pmwlc74,
I appreciate your reasoning. But I will take exception with a couple of your points.
1.) Dana could not make it in formula1 and demoted herself to keep the sponsors in the green. Not my opinion, fact. She was a marketing ploy, not a serious driver. I mean no insult to her fans, and I am in no way being sexist. She simply could not hang. Her stats bear that out.
2. )Also, to allude that any one of these drivers is working paycheck-to-paycheck is disingenuous, and you know that as well as I do (re: Jeff Gordon….please).
Look, let me peel back to the point. When I grew up with NASCAR, the guy with the fastest car won. No limiters, plates, or intrusive mechanical regulations . Excuse my sense of sentimentality, but that is racing, pure and simple. That is why I finally gravitated to F1. The guy with the fastest car wins. None of this crap about rigging the race to be competitive….that in my opinion is un-american. Just because you keep getting your butt handed to you, you do not change the rules! You get better.
F1 as an example. Ferrari kept devastating the field….what happened…everyone got better. Though Schumacher is racing for another team, he has not won in a while.
That is the sole reason I have such a negative opinion of today’s NASCAR. I love the fans, they are the most passionate around…that’s why I mean no disrespect. But when my childhood hero Petty crossed the line, it was not because he bumped and shoved everyone in a process of

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 4:44pmAll Pro,
I toally appreciate where you are coming from…NASCAR was never clean and pretty…but in the day, bumping and rubbing was incidental and considered part of the contest…BUT my exception is when it actually became part of the strategy because they had to compensate for all the mechanical “limitations” put on them….they had to drive different. They had to drive drive dirtier. When in the day did you see driver “pushing” one another? You did’nt.
Look, Im not being romantic, or trying to be an uptight purist (when the ideal never existed i the first place). My sole point is the BS that is injected into the “sport” for the sake of rigging it has degraded its intention. RACING. not everyone gets a trophy, and there are winners and losers…but everytime I see them circle the track 3-wide I weep for the sport.

Posted on August 26, 2012 at 9:22pmfande3rls, your specificity is welcome…but let me clarify…
When I say F1, i am most certainly NOT talking admirably of Indy…same dog different fleas.
I offer that true f1 racing on the European circuit is the most bare knuckles high end of high end sports on the planet. Some have offered that a chimp could navigate an indy car around the oval…i agree.,,now try that on a European run….not so much eh?
but take off the training wheels and try Monico, or Austria and some of the other human breaching tracks….no BS reg’s on the cars or drivers like NASCAR.
Did you ever see a NASCAR driver step up to F!….no, not ever….plenty an F1 driver has stepped down into NASCAR to supplement their retirement….
BTW, those supposed street legal cars in NASCAR are faux stock cars…come’on really? F1 not street legal and NASCAR is? truly you jest.
