See the Exchange Over Race Between Gingrich and Juan Williams That Led to a Standing Ovation

We’ve already given you the debate in 100 seconds, but one clip getting a lot of play on Tuesday morning is the slightly contentious exchange between Fox‘s Juan Williams and Newt Gingrich regarding racism and Gingrich’s comments about blacks. We highlighted the exchange in part last night, but below is an expanded version.
In short, Williams wanted Gingrich to defend his statements about food stamps and Barack Obama. Gingrich did, but in a way that dismissed the question as a “gotcha” — and in a way that drew jeers from the crowd for Williams and cheers from the crowd for Gingrich. In fact, Gingrich even secured a standing ovation.
Talking Points Memo explains (as well as has some of the transcript):
After the debate, Fox News commentator Frank Luntz — who was apparently in the room — was surprised at the crowd’s reaction. He said it was the first time he’d ever seen a debate audience give a candidate a standing ovation during an ongoing debate.
What led to such a response? This question from Williams started it.
“Speaker Gingrich, you said black Americans should demand jobs, not food stamps. You also said poor kids lack a strong work ethic and proposed having them work as janitors in their schools,” Williams asked. “Can’t you see that this is viewed, at a minimum, as insulting to all Americans, but particularly to black Americans?”
“No. I don’t see that,” Gingrich said flatly.
The crowd cheered for that one. But they really got going when Williams followed up with this:
I have to tell you my Twitter account has been inundated by all races, who are asking if your comments are not intended to belittle the poor and racial minorities. You saw some of this reaction dug your visit to a black church in South Carolina. We saw some of this during your visit to a church in South Carolina where a woman dad’s asked you why you referred to President Obama as the food stamp president. It sounds as if you are seeking to belittle people. The crowd booed Williams as he tried to get the question out. When Gingrich responded, they (according to Luntz) jumped to their feet and gave him a standing ovation.
“Well, first of all, Juan, the fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history,” Gingrich said. “I know among the politically correct you are not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable.”
Gingrich ended with a rousing, finger-pounding explanation that citizens are endowed by their “creator” with the right to pursue happiness and that he was going to find ways to help “poor people” in their quest for upward mobility. That set the crowd ablaze:
Some believe the exchange may have given Newt new life. Others, like our Blaze readers, were disappointed that the race questions fell to the only black man on the debate panel.

Mr. Gingrich singled out a specific race when mentioning food stamps. That is racist.
Poverty is color blind.
For Mr. Gingrich to single out a particular race when discussing government programs for the poor is racist.

It’s just not. All the PC bullcrap these days tells you it is, but it’s just NOT. If I say that more black people than white people have sickle cell anemia, is that racist? If not, why? Your problem is that the politically correct diet that you constantly feed upon has prevented you to recognize and acknowledge the truth – a pathetic shame, but you have plenty of company in your forlorn state of mind.
The truth is that fully 33% of blacks are on welfare of one form or another which in most cases includes food stamps. The next problem is we have a job killer as President who happens to be the Job Killer-in-Chief, and is fully supported in his askew thinking and policies by the literal kooks in the Dumocratic Party, and more particularly with the unflinching support of the Congressional Black Caucus, whose warped mindset and lack of understanding has done more harm to the black community than good, particularly when they will not acknowledge the breakdown of the black family, which incidentally can be directly attributed to LBJ’s The Great Society, nor will the CBC face the problems of the enormous number of out of wedlock births, which are a recipe for failure from the moment the child comes out of the mothers womb. Instead of whining and complaining about the lack of freebies, the CBC and the rest of the Democrats, with whom the conservative Republicans would work hand in hand, need to address the problems in the inner city with an acknowledging of those problems, instead of trying to sweep the truth under the carpet and clamoring for more money that never solves a thing.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 10:45amDon’t let facts get in the way of your Bigotry.
Uncomfortable Fact A far larger proportion of Blacks are on Welfare and Food Stamps than any other race. To explore the reason why is just to follow the facts it is not Racist.
To assume the qualities of one person because of their race is racist. Many did that here. There are many hard working Americans of every single race in every single occupation (though in Sports Blacks prevail that does not make those owners racist against whites).
To correct the problems many Blacks in America face you do need to be able to address them specifically. That is not racist. I have a problem with passing a Martin Luther bill that gives voting rights to ex-Felons because more blacks are convicted of crimes. The bill should address the reason they live lives that get them arrested. Correct that and the statistics will change. This bill is racist in that it just assumes that blacks will always get arrested because they are genetically inferior or something so it applies a bandaid by allowing ex-felons to vote.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 10:46amJZS – you’ve obviosly never taken a statistics class (or you have and you’re just dishonest) so let me spell something out for you.
Yes, only 37% of food stamp recipients are black. But as blacks only make up 12% of the population 37% is an inordinately large amount. To put it another way; 1 in 3 black families gets food stamps, as opposed to 1 in 10 white families.
Which is why any mention of cutting food stamps (whether race is mentioned or not) is immediately siezed upon by the Democrat Propaganda Division (AKA the mainstream media) as being racist. Kind of like any criticism of Obama is called racist…

Look at Africa, the richest continent on Earth in resources and yet the populations there are dying of disease and starvation. There are some pockets of sub-Saharan indigenous peoples that are still preliterate and many still in a stone-age existence. You cannot blame the welfare system and the FDR/LBJ social engineering for all the black’s woes.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:25am@Diomasach Ah yes the convenience of using the percentage rather than the absolute number to make ones point. Another great abuse of statistics. Clearly no one would argue that as a percentage there are more black families that live in poverty than white families. A figure that would be indicative of economic and social policies more so than some racial characteristic. Access to an equitable education might be a good place to start. Newt’s so called facts are not a revelation, but rather a continued indictment of the lack of investment in the inner cities and poorer communities. Every child in the US needs to be provided with a solid education through high school. Beyond that college assistance should be provided based on merit. The US is in the shape it is in because we have wasted tons of money in wars and overseas involvements as opposed to investing in ourselves. The government provided $72 billion in food stamp assistance to “Nearly 75 percent of SNAP participants are in families with children; more than one-quarter of participants are in households with seniors or people with disabilities.” In contrast the US spends $600 billion on defense per year and and additional $100 billion on our current wars. Which one is the problem.

My father made a statement during the debate last night. “Newt will never get elected because there’s too much in his career that can be taken out of context.”
We live in a society where bearing false witness is so commonplace as to be mundane. We’ve abandoned the ninth commandment.
Newt’s career is extremely long.. He was the big idea guy for the Republican party for years. The truth is that you can cherry pick votes and quotes to support almost any argument you want to make, but that doesn’t make it true.
Legislation is an amalgamation of many things and sometimes you vote for or against it due to other portions of the bill. Furthermore, conservatives live and learn like any other group and the best thinking in 1990 does not necessarily jive with our understanding in 2012.
This is why the ACU conservative ratings are so valuable. They take all of this into account. They pick legislation that isn’t weighted down with other issues. They judge this against the best conservative opinions OF THE DAY. Newt has an excellent score with these people. He wasn’t the most conservative politician of his time and he certainly had (and has) his flaws. But, overall, he’s scored well.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 11:55amDiomasach, maybe you haven’t taken a history course. Within my lifetime blacks were discouraged or prevented from voting, from living in a neighborhood with good schools, not allowed to work at any but the most menial jobs, and pushed into the poorest neighborhoods with the worst schools where many or most have remained. Still there is plenty of bigotry, and invisible walls to success of blacks, particularly in the South. You’d like to think that the cultural and socioeconomic forces from 200 years of slavery and predudice simply vanished with the Civil Rights Act or whatever, but think again. You might believe that a child raised in poverty with uneducated parents has the same chance of success as someone born to priveledge, but you’d be wrong.
Actually, thanks to the Republicans, upward mobility in the United States (rising to a higher level of income than your parents) is lower than most industrialized nations.

That’s not right. “35% of participants are white; 22% are African-American, not Hispanic; 10% are Hispanic; 2% are Asian, 4% are Native American, and 19% are of unknown race or ethnicity.” Wekipedia
Newt was addressing the whining by blacks about his promotion of work over food stamps. That whites are 35% of the recipients has nothing to do with this entire exchange, unless it is to be considered that only blacks whine about getting food stamps. Whites hardly ever mention it, probably because, unlike blacks, they’re glad to be able to get something that will help them.
“Juan’s question was carefully phrased. He said “can’t you see” that people view your remarks as offensive? The fact is, many, many people view his remarks as offensive. But Newt is color blind to that fact.”
The one racial group in this country who constantly lament about one matter or another, as if they’re the only victims in the universe, are blacks. And blacks are consumed with race and nothing else.
Numerically, there are far greater numbers of poor whites than poor blacks, but to listen only to the wailing and whining from blacks it could be assumed no one is poor but blacks. And blacks, incidentally, are poor, as a group, because they can’t succeed in a first world nation, because their group average I.Q. is 85, lower than any other race in the world

The Republican Party is in no way a barrier or a hindrance to the upward economic mobility of any person at any level of American society or culture. In fact the exact opposite is true, meaning the Republican Party Is a starter, innovator, creator of business and business opportunity and the commensurate jobs that come therewith.
The Democrat Party and it’s leadership are job killers and perpetuate the welfare, give me some Obama money mentality. It is just a basic fact that not only is undeniable but is a form of pathology that perpetuates the destruction of America through failed policies, programs, ideology and agenda.

No, of course not. You made that up along with the rest of your post. You say you know that all blacks are violent, welfare queens, stupid, hate whites, complain about race, under perform every other minority etc. Funny, that’s just what those hate groups said in the 50s to prevent desegration of food and water fountains. You think you’re making a case, but you’re just saying the same thing your kind have alway said about one minority group or another. You probably copied it from a hate pamphlet from 50 years ago.

I am a bit conflicted about his stance on illegals, wanting those with a 25 years or more of ties to a community, good work ethic and paying taxes, to be allowed to stay. Normally I would not agree with that, but he does qualify that with them not being ‘citizens’ with voting rights, so it might not be a bad thing, especially if the numbers are minimal.
I have always felt Newt was a staunch supporter of the Military, but I have not heard any of them speak to the issue of the recent dust up with the Marines, I would like to hear his take on that as well.

It comes from the real world, old boy. Only a bona fide idiot would fail to note every black appearance on t.v., radio and every article they clumsily try to write is about race. Almost everybody but a few rabid leftist geeks like you are unaware of it. Blacks are consumed with race, and here’s another strain for you: Blacks are concerned with almost nothing but other blacks the world over, even over and above their own countrymen. If you can‘t see black preoccupation with their own race and race in general you’re an absolute buffaoon.

Blacks are 12.6% of the population but commit 58% of all violent crime. (US Dept of Justice) On average, blacks rape 37,500 white women in any given year. (FBI Uniforn Crime Report) Black I.Q. group average is 85 for US BLacks and 70 for African blacks. (Murray and Hernstein, The Bell Curve) )Lynn, I.Q, and Wealth of Nations.)

No, most people on food stamps are white, but it is ONLY blacks who whine uncontrollably about being on welfare and food stamps as if they’re the only ones in this country who are poor. So, it is this constant whining that prompted the remark by Gingrich. Why do you find that hard to understand?

Every child in the US needs to be provided with a solid education through high school. Beyond that college assistance should be provided based on merit. The US is in the shape it is in because we have wasted tons of money in wars and overseas involvements as opposed to investing in ourselves.”
Our waste of money in wars overseas is no scapegoat for the waste of money on government interventions.
Contrary to what you suppose, it’s not a LACK of “investment” in inner cities that causes them to be poor, but rather an ABUNDANCE of government intervention in the inner cities.
Government interventions can only make people poorer, because there is NOTHING that government can do to help the economy. We all need freedom of mobility.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 7:34pmThere is a myth here about who gets more ad who gets less. Sure there are more whites on welfare than blacks but when compared to percent of population, you will see that is not an accurate assumption.
First: say America is 350 million. Of this, 50% is white at 175,000,000 people and 15% is black at 52,000,000. (I am using approximation and not true census numbers here)
Second: say there are 45 million on welfare. Of this, 40% is white at 18,000,000 and 20% are black at 9,000,000 receiving the government hand out.
Third: compare the actual numbers to the true numbers of percent population. The whites are at 10.5% of the population using welfare whereas the blacks are at 17.25%. Fifty percent of the population is using 11% of the program versus fifteen percent using 17.5%.

The Melancholy Dane (and not Sanguine Phlegmatic Choleric Melancholy — as in personality types) chuckles over the fate he has in store for his childhood comrades, who are plotting to have him killed. Deferring his existential crisis for a moment, he then turns the plot to the plotters, substituting their names for his in the death warrant they carried from King Claudius. He continued: “But I will delve one yard below their mines/ And blow them at the moon.” The keyword here is mines, as in land mines for explaining the petard or petar — as Shakespeare puts it (I surmise people even needed spellcheck back then). The petard was a small explosive device designed to blow open barricaded doors and gates, and a favored weapon in Elizabethan times. Is that you Dirty Harry? Petard (as I laugh at your profound ignorance) comes from the Middle French peter, which derives in turn from the Latin peditum — the sense of which is “to break wind.” This either means the French had a serious generation of gas in their alimentary canals in those days, or that the petard was of something less than nuclear detonation. All too often, the sapper who was responsible for lighting the petard’s crude fuse was himself hoisted skyward much like a suicide bomber. Perhaps, it was a short fuse or manufactuer defect.

1). Regardless of what gains they have made, and the many contributions to this nation, black Americans continue to be portrayed in the media as lazy, irresponsible, criminal, uneducated and monolithic. To many uneducated Americans, “black” continues to signify virtually all of the negative traits that whites historically have ascribed to it. People such as youself see this ideological racial drivel on the part of the revisionists among you; through the pervasiveness of lack of study; and institutionalization through American immoral culture (through subversive literature, movies, and advertising — which continues today). The European’s etymology of truth is said to have come from Anglo-Saxon “fidelity”; from Old English for “soothe,“ as from ”soothsayer” (a teller of the truth about the future); from “stable” or “steadfast”; or from the etymon (true) of the word etymology (“the literal sense of a word”). Upon my research in the etymology of the term Paleosiberian, I found paleo from the Greek word “palai” to mean, “ancient” or “primitive.” Siberian has a dual meaning: “Sib” from the Greek “Sippa” to mean “kinship, family-related by blood.“ ”Erian“ from the Sanskrit word ”arya“ to mean ”noble,” in reference to the Persian language. “Arya” also denotes the sub-tribe of people who migrated from Turkey into Palestine and were given the name “Caucasian” from the regions of the Caucus Mountains in Europe. According to Gwyn Jones (perhaps the world’s leading authority on the subject), to the Welsh chroniclers, the Danes coming in by way of England and the Norwegians by way of Ireland were pretty well all black: Black Gentiles, Black Norsemen, Black Host. There is the example, the legend of the mysterious African sea-rovers, the Fomorians, who had a stronghold on Torrey Island, off the Northwest Coast. You of all people should know of the The Fomorians, shrouded deep in mist, who came to be regarded as the sinister forces in Irish mythology. The originals were called the Grimaldies. It was only three thousand years ago that whiteman became the dominant type in an African-owned Europe. Before that it was people who migrated from African. For more than 58,000 years Africans were the only Europeans. Europe was discovered and mapped by Africans. Europe of yesterday, today and tomorrow will ever remain Africa’s heritage. Many thousands of years before the rise of the current pale tribes of Europe, the Grimaldi people established the Aurignacian cultures. These people were anatomically modern human beings of the West African typology. They brought the first indications of cultural thoughts and rites into Europe. The Grimaldi had very little body hair, black and smooth skin; they had the facial features typical of West African forest dwellers. They had curly hair.

It’s amazing how the gift of gab can provide a crazy amount of power over people. It’s happened since the dawn of time, and even with what everybody knows now about it, it seems to happen with even more frequency. Amazing, indeed.
Nah, been there and done that and saw that movie before. Me? I know Newt would be better than Obama, but my feeling is that I need more than that. I need a revolution, not evolution and same-same. But, if it helps get ya thru the nite, by all means.

He simply can’t win. He’s not likable. He doesn’t get things done. He’s a hypocrite.
Newt‘s biggest claim to fame is taking the House during Clinton’s years with the “Contract with America.” Well, I think we can all see that it doesn’t matter who is leading, after 2 years of a liberal President ALL AMERICA votes Republican. And secondly, he was a terrible Speaker. Check out Ann Coulter’s columns on Newt- she gives facts, dates, stats, and sources.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 9:07amNewt is right on spot. The Democrats have turned the whole black race, with a few exceptions, into a, “You owe me” group of people. King is rolling over in his grave at what has become of his dream.King was for equal justice and equal opportunity, not set asides and equal results for an inferior race. King did not see blacks as inferior. He saw them as equal.

That’s because white people, in general, don’t care about race, but rather the content of one’s character. It is only blacks, in general, who display the nasty vestiges of racism nowadays.

Both my girls worked as volunteer candy strpers in the hospitals until they got old enough to work at part time jobs and during the summer, they both had part time jobs in the summers as well as they were both on the soft ball teams from the time they were old enough to play until they graduated from HS. They were also involved in many extra-curricular activities all through their school years. Both got scholorships to college, yet work part time in college and still maintain their grades. Both are now successful and both have families who are also being brought up as they were. Neither has ever been in trouble and are still involved in commjunity activities as well as their children who are old enough.

Showing the voting public ALL of his failings is actually a good thing because he‘s telling the people of America that he’s HUMAN, he’s FALIBLE, and you KNOW WHAT HE’S DONE in the past. You aren’t buying a complete UNKNOWN LIKE OBAMA who is still a mystery after FOUR YEARS!!! (EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT WE NOW KNOW HE’S A MARXIST!)
