The Blaze has reported in the past on the number of strange and slightly unsettling ghost towns in China:
But while those pictures may be creepy, imagine pictures of another set of structures laying dormant and abandoned. Imagine pictures of ghost town-like shopping malls.
Thanks to the site Also Sprach Analyst and author Christopher Pavese, you don’t have to imagine.
What’s going on here? Four words: massive misallocation of capital.
“The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was a single-party state ruled by the Communist Party,” Pavese writes.
“The state was structured under a highly-centralized government and a command economy, meaning both capital and resources could be mobilized quickly and proficiently,” he adds.
But as those four words mentioned in the above imply, speed and agility don’t always mean economic efficiency. Hence, misallocation of capital — the kind where entire cities are built and no one lives in them.
“[A] picture is worth a thousand word. So we’ll summarize how we view the Chinese economy’s attempt at rebalancing away from domestic investment and toward consumption with a few pictures,” Pavese writes.
“But first, consider that one of the most insightful nuggets from our visits with various local government officials was the common belief that, ‘Developing new cities and building new infrastructure will increase consumption,’” he adds.
“Judging by the foot traffic shown in this Zhuhai Home Furnishings Mall, you could say that I am slightly suspicious.”
However, to be fair, “there are shopping malls with better foot traffic (those targeting at mass market with a more balanced tenant mixed seems to be doing better than the one shown in the first photo, which are all selling high-end stuff), but even those looked mediocre,” Also Sprach Analyst reports.

Right along the border if you prefer, especially a natural border like the Great Lakes system including the St. Clair River between Michigan and Ontario. It would be my escape plan except I already escaped. When things head further south you’ll regret not having a big house for all your family to meet, in a different country. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a matter of degree. Things are going to get worse everywhere, but you can buy time as well as property here.

These are the people that are conservative at heart and they are the true patriots in America imo. I walked in their shoes for many years. I know how think and I know where they are missing it but I just can’t seem to get through.. Yes I‘m entirely frustrated and I probably come across as an ass most of the time now but it’s because it seems that so very few are understanding.. Beck‘s words carry so much weight with these people and they don’t understand that Beck is their Rodeo Clown.
Anyway I will try what you suggest but god I don’t trust the people on the left! Posted on April 14, 2012 at 2:25amcome on people, this is a net positive for idaho which badly needs the invested money. many of our big US corporations have thousands of factories and land all over china, and they‘re not thinking we’re invading them. i’ve worked on projects in china for a long time, and travel extensively there for business. the people (not the party leaders) are incredibly free market oriented, and more capitalist than the US has become, frankly. If we would consider the whole united states a ‘special economic zone’ and ease our thousands of regulations, manufacturing would flourish here too. a little multi-culturalism isn’t bad for the US either. The chinese people are starving for freedom, information and truth, and if we feed them a taste, they will want what we have…..and 3 billion partners and allies wouldn’t be a bad thing for our country against the coming islamic armies, who will be our true enemies come the next 5 years….

I can see a socialist/communist falling into this trap. They do not understand that
the markets and demand bring malls, tenants, products, and customers.
I hear all the time that we need to spend more on education because that will bring new jobs.
However, it is the business that creates demand for certain people for certain skills. You can
graduate thousands of diversity counselors or typewriter designers every day but that does not
mean that businesses will be created to hire them. Governments suck at understanding markets.

The over-emphasis on supplier-side economics (policies not unfamiliar to the U.S.) is all wasted effort if no one has the money to create the demand (i.e. buy) the products being supplied.

I scrolled down to see if someone would come up with that idea…so you got it first…so maybe they edited the tape to not show the mall-cop breaking into the Hallmark Store to get a birthday card for his future-bride-one-child-family girlfriend. The mall-cop IS born in the year of the dragon so the getting a “tat’on his back is his too-much-sock-ee(sp) party from the night before.
