See the Luxury Doomsday Prepper Shelters Being Built Into an Abandoned KS Missile Silo

As uncertainty has gripped global economic and political structures, “preppers” have tasked themselves with bracing for potential calamity and chaos. We’ve already told you about these individuals who are stocking up on food, guns, water and other items. Now, in Kansas, preppers are also building super-protective luxury condos into the shaft of an abandoned missile silo.

According to AFP, four buyers have already put a total of $7 million down for these emergency homes that will protect them if and when disaster hits. The developer, Larry Hall, plans to create even more housing in other Cold War-era storage units when this first prepper haven fills up.

Hall, 55, isn’t just a businessman who is creating these homes for others while shrinking away from the notion that calamity could, indeed, hit. The developer has also secured one of the houses for himself. While he plans to use the new structure as a vacation home, he’s ready and willing to move his family there in case the power grid gets wiped out or some other monumental issue unfolds.

WTSP.com provides more information about Hall’s motivations for purchasing the silo and embarking on this epic journey of preparation:

Years ago, Hall was running NebuTel Inc., a small telecommunications and consulting company. Part of his growth strategy in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001, was setting up secure, remote sites for data storage for Fortune 500 customers, a niche seemingly further driven home by the three hurricanes in 2005 that nearly destroyed NebuTel’s operation in downtown Melbourne.

Abandoned missile silos, designed to withstand a nuclear war, seemed ideal for that type of data storage. So Hall bought one. But then two things happened. The first was the recession, which stalled NebuTel’s growth plans as business spending plummeted. The second was Hall heeding what had been a growing concern within him over the safety of his now 7-year-old son and wife in the event of some sort of disaster. These worries kept him up at night.

And AFP has more about the fascinating homes Hall is building:

Built to withstand an atomic blast, even the most paranoid can find comfort inside concrete walls that are nine feet thick and stretch 174 feet (53 meters) underground.

Instead of simply setting up shop in the old living quarters provided for missile operators, Hall is building condos right up the missile shaft. Seven of the 14 underground floors will be condo space selling for $2 million a floor or $1 million a half floor. Three and a half units have been sold, two contracts are pending and only two more full units are available, Hall said. [...]

He is also installing an indoor farm to grow enough fish and vegetables to feed 70 people for as long as they need to stay inside and also stockpiling enough dry goods to feed them for five years.

The compound will offer anything and everything to its inhabitants. Energy supplies will be plentiful and water will be stored and filtered in giant, underwater tanks. Security, too, will be stellar. An elevator will only operate if an individual within it has fingerprints that are in the electronic system. Cameras will monitor a barbed-wire fence to alert residents of any unwelcome visitors.

The top, exterior of the structure.

“If they try to climb the fence we can stun them,” Hall explained. “If they want to break into the system, we can put an end to that.”

While the structure is all about safety, it won’t come without entertainment value. A pool, movie theater and library are all in the plans as well.

That is cool! Heck with the dome commune approach. Do they make a country cabin ark dome on 10 acres, where I can usher in 2 of every beast and fowl, 1 female and 1 male into a lower basement forrest and aviary? With a waterfall and river also.

I don’t think God will let mankind destroy themselves.

What happens when the bad guys blow up the fence and then choke off the air supply? Where exactly does the energy come from? That windmill in the photo? What if the bad guys blow that up?

I think it’s a cool fantasy and I hope the guy makes lots of money. There’s a market for paranoia.

They want to audit the fed and find out where trillions of dollars are missing too. That is because they elites have taken our money and also built for themselves underground bunkers so that they will not die. In the day of wrath, nothing will save the ungodly. I don’t care how these doomsday preppers have contained themselves in bunkers and missle silos, if they do not have the favor and protection of God, they are going to be cast into the winepress of the wrath of God almighty. They will not be able to hide when they see the son on man coming in the clouds of heaven with his mighty angels in power and glory. To think that they are wasting all the money and time and effort for something that will not protect them. People are afraid to die because of a good reason.

      Posted on April 10, 2012 at 3:38pm

You could still acquire one of these, but the cost of renovation is still going to be huge. If you really want a bunker, think about a really big septic tank (seriously). You can get really large ferrous concrete ones, 20-30,000 gal versions are commonly available from manufacturers. Lots of folks use them for tornado shelters out in the midwest. Stairways are easily added to the design, and it’s no problem to install additional entrances and conduits.

They are relatively inexpensive, stressed to handle the earth loads of being underground (which are not inconsequential), and can be easily delivered by semi-trailer(s). If it can keep the sewage from seeping out, it can certainly keep the outside water from seeping in. If you need more room, just string a bunch of them together. Your budget is your limit, but it will still beat what you’d have to come up with to renovate one of the old Atlas silos. I’ve inspected those, but they leak…..a lot. In my estimation, there’s really no point in going as deep as the Atlas missile silo(s). Each Atlas installation I’m familiar with had two silos, side by side, one for the missile and another for the command capsule. They made great scuba diving sites as they filled up with water. If they left the top slammed shut you had 100 ft of clear water to dive in as they had decades to fill with ground water. It was always a night dive though, so not a lot of folks were interested in it.

I’d LOVE to have one of these. Of course, I’m not paying that much for one of these, but I’d LOVE to own one as a primary residence. I absolutely love in Earth home designs. Typically, these require a lot of effort just to keep from flooding, though.

Not because I‘m worried about an eminent nuke attack or that I won’t ‘survive’ one. Just because I‘m SICK of freaking’ mexican polka music played at TOP volume to all hours of the night as though neighbors don’t live within 2 miles.

But, I’d settle for a ammunition bunker above ground.

Man has built/and lived in underground shelters for centuries. Perhaps not as elaborate as these, but still the same idea. Why is this weird? I’ve been telling any and everyone I can about dome homes and buildings. The dome manufacturers I know of guarantee their domes to withstand tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. They are fireproof and termite proof. They are unbelievably energy efficient and measure their longevity in centuries. They cost relatively the same as conventional buildings to build and maintain (-actually, probably cheaper to maintain). So why is this weird? Want to restart the economy? Replace inferior buildings with domes. How many jobs would be created teaching/learning how to build and maintain these. I’d love to see veterans get 1st crack at learning this stuff for possibly starting their own business. Ever lived through a tornado? Someone tell me why so many survivors rebuild using the same inferior building materials that failed in the first place. FEMA knows about and has rated domes as near safe structures. So tell me why this is weird. What is weird and just plain stupid is ignoring or ridiculing technology that can literally: save lives, save loads of energy, create good American jobs, re-start our economy. Oh, and have you heard about mini dome greenhouses (-have fresh produce 365 days a year no matter where you live)? The potential that domes offer is wide open. I applaud this guy for thinking outside the box, literally.
