See the Moment the Oklahoma Earthquake Hit — Including ESPN Reporter’s Wide-Eyed Reaction On Air

Oklahoma is rattled after the state’s strongest earthquake shook the ground for nearly a minute Saturday night.

The magnitude 5.6 quake was centered near Sparks, about 44 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. It was followed by a series of aftershocks Sunday morning, including two with 4.0 magnitudes.

No major injuries have been reported, but homeowners and businesses noted cracked walls, fallen items and other minor damage. The Shawnee Fire Department told KWTV in Oklahoma City one spire on the administration building at St. Gregory University had been damaged and another one was leaning.

At least three sections of U.S. Route 62 reportedly buckled as a result of the quake, which was felt as far away as Wisconsin and Tennessee.

At least eight earthquakes were felt during a 24-hour period that kicked off early Saturday with a magnitude 4.7.

Residents quickly uploaded their own videos capturing the moment the temblor hit.

Content warning — strong language

And finally, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit was on the air reporting on the Oklahoma State-Kansas State football game at the time of the quake. Watch his eyes as he realizes what’s happening, then is unable to answer a question about his report.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

This post will be updated as additional information comes in.

I’m 30 miles away and it shook us for a minute. If you look on the USGS page there are 23 quakes listed in the last day. Remember we have a harder substructor than CA so the waves carry farther. It was quite an evening. And yes, it could have been God clapping for the OSU win!!! If all LSU could do was 9 points they don’t have a chance against us.

Mucho oil removed from OK through the years. Could have caused shifting in the tectonic plates beneath, resulting in the quake. (Just speculation).

Probably not, the earth moves all the time and really…5.6…?? It’s not that big. In the Philippines while stationed there we had serveral at 6.5, now THAT rocks! Also in the Azores, we had them while stationed there, but they are different in that they are a sharp jolt instead of a rolling kind of thing. If you have never been in one they will freak you out till you get used to them. We’ve actually had them here in east central “Peoples Republic of Illinois”

I don’t know what I find more “earth shattering”: a 5.6 quake or the fact that a “journalist” uses “him and his wife” as the subject of a sentence.

Aunt Moxie! I thought we old geezers were the last of the grammatically correct English speakers. What a pleasure to hear from a young person who actually learned something in our education system that is in shambles.
Texting is another thing that will be the downfall of the English language…perhaps all language…what a lazy, ineloquent way of communicating.

What’s even sadder is people are starting to WRITE in such bad grammar. Does anyone teach proper grammar anymore? It’s getting so bad that good English is starting to sound wrong to MY ears, I hear it so seldom. Who says “It’s he“ as opposed to ”It’s him”? The first is the correct one, but I think the battle on that one was lost decades ago.

Here in Oklahoma City we felt both of them. The first one early Saturday morning caused the bed to shake and pens to rattle around on the desk. The second one late Saturday night again shook the bed, and also moved the pictures on the wall and opened up some of the cabinets in the kitchen.

While the rest of the nation may laugh at us because it was “only” a 5.6 quake, we’re not used to them, thus they don’t enter on our radar.

Severe thunderstorms? Tornadoes? just another day in Oklahoma. A EF0 tornado is just a stiff breeze for us.

Just because they gave it a 5+ rating doesn‘t mean it wasn’t as bad as those they give a 7+ rating. There are a number of other factors that come into play such as the depth of the epicenter, the underlying ground structure, etc. No matter what, when you feel one of these there sure is a feeling of helplessness as there is nothing you can do. The earth shifting there means somewhere else there must be a shift too.

As a Christian, I am expected to be compassionate toward you, but I am not feeling it. I want you and anyone else who disrespects Christ to hang…i won’t be disappointed.
Go and make your dis-beliefs known, but leave the believers alone, we are not push-overs nor are we cowards. If you think that turning the other cheek means I won’t defend myself my family, friends or my tribe, you are very very foolish.
There will be a definite show of power….You will tremble where you stand.
I stay locked and loaded at all times and those I don‘t trust don’t get very close…period.
I believe that you would attempt to refute the theory of relativity to Einstein’s face, as if you knew anything at all about higher math….that is how you approach Christianity….another subject you know nothing about.

Having moved to Tulsa from San Jose, I can tell you that in the Midwest a 5.6 is huge. Here we have solid bedrock, unlike the broken up stuff thatS under the Golden State. What that means is that earthquake waves are carried pretty damn far and it takes much farther for those waves to dissipate. Making. It much worse in many ways. This one was felt as far away as Tennessee and Wisconsin. It’s as if the Northridge quake was felt in Bend OR.

As a kid I was leaning against a pole in the ground and it tossed me on the ground it swayed so strongly didn’t know what was going on till I saw all the cars swaying back and fro and all the neighbors running into the street that was a 7.5 way back in 1960 or so, we lived in what is still known as the Earthquake capital of the USA in Imperial Valley CA inland from San Diego CA that area is known to have an earthquake almost every week most you can’t feel

With all this new (Location and intensity) earth quake action, one should wonder…
    What is causing this?
    Yellowstone Dome changes?
Large object location changes in relative near space to earth?
Intelligent people changing from Left leaning to Right? (That’s the one I like)
Or just the planet reminding us how little control or effect we really have?

    I don’t know!

Living in Tulsa, Oklahoma I can personally vouch that it WAS way weird. I experienced both and the 5.6 was so much more sustained then the 4.7. Dogs went nuts right before and continued until about 1 minute after it was over with, as far as I was concerned. I’ve lived here all my life and never experienced feeling an earthquake. I wonder with this series of quakes hitting in so many areas if we are being forewarned of a earthquake storm about to unleash here in the states once again?

      YEP
If you are really interested, faults and tectonics don’t make sense scientifically. They are based on the evolution assumption that the earth is millions of years old. . Whereas, if you read MIT PhD Walt Brown’s Compelling Evidence for Creation and the Flood, he explains that the earth is young. The earthquakes are because gravity is still pulling the earth tighter and tighter. See? His theory makes sense scientifically (gravity). Just look at the plates which are all different shapes and whatnot. They can’t slide and move around and if they do, they just magicaly do it. There isn’t a driving force as to how it works. Well, I am not good at explaining it. So, look it up if interested! He explains all of the theories so you can decide which is more logical or scientific.
