See the New Pictures of China‘s ’Mighty Dragon’ J-20 Stealth Fighter

(Editor’s Note: This story was written by Eloise Lee and Robert Johnson and originally appeared in Business Insider)

New pictures of the China’s J-20 Mighty Dragon stealth fighter have surfaced and are making their way across military blogs.

Chinas J 20 Stealth Fighter Is Already Blowing Away Expectations

This newest round of photos show the J-20 in the skies somewhere over mainland China.

The prototype is said to be using the Saturn AL-31 turbofan engine developed by the Russians for their Su-27 air superiority fighter.

Reuben Johnson at The Washington Times reports the Chinese may be as much as 10 years away from producing an original stealth engine to slip into the J-20.

In the meantime, they’ll have to take comfort in the fact that while the F-22 Raptor may be more agile and made entirely in the U.S., the Dragon carries more fuel and weapons than Lockheed’s fighter.

The J-20′s development is also moving along much faster than anyone had expected. Back in 2009, Gen. He Weirong, deputy commander of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force said in a TV interview that the J-20 wouldn’t be operational until 2017-2019. That estimate will likely be revised if work continues at the current pace.

Bill Sweetman at AviationWeek points out that for all its headway, no one is yet sure what the J-20 is for. He speculates that given the aircraft’s size and weapons bays, it may be used to “threaten intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets and tankers, by using stealth and speed to defeat their escorts.”

China developed their own WS-10G turbofan engines to power the Mighty Dragon.

Its frontal fuselage has been designed like the F-22 Raptor to reduce radar detectability.

The J-20 has a large weapon bay with two smaller lateral bays for short and long range air-to-air missiles.

Remember that air power is a deterrent. It’s the deterrent behind nuclear weapons. By countering our deterrence, they leave only nuclear options as realistic plans to prevent war.

Expect to see these in the skies over central africa in the next 10 years when China decides to re-colonize for raw materials.

Stealth, my 2004 Honda Accord. This plane is only a little more stealthy then an F-14 Tomcat. Check out the control surfaces on the wings and tail fins. Also, check out the exhaust nozzles. Although it bares some similarities to parts of the F-22 it is a poor copy. The Obama administration took the McNamara route and chose a a lesser joint services plane over the proven F-22. Again, they are leading us down the road to disaster.

It is amazing how ignorant we are and let the Chinese use us and play us for fools. The Chinese are hell bent on stealing every high tech product we have and drive us out of business and have been doing it for years. Chinese espionage is out of control and the fools in our government do nothing but talk, in fact our new ambassador was ordered to streamline visa’s for Chinese to come to America. Year on year there is 20-30% increases in our universities and now even they are starting to enter our high schools and other schools, pushing out our own students and stealing their places causing more problems having to shift teachers focus on catering to foreign students needs instead. Their spies are in our universities, corporations, military contractors and businesses. Chinese restaurants are used to poison Americans with their cheap toxic imported food and not only that but they are used to launder money, harbor illegal immigrants, avoid taxes, and aid espionage activities. As their spying costs us billions of dollars and years of time they then copy and mass produce their fakes and counterfeits, side note, if you ever see foreigners selling fake merchandise, contact ICE immediately and report them. They then make money off our backs and hard work and when our economy collapses they take their stolen money and come to America they buy our spots in our best schools for their corrupt children, they buy our land, our businesses and steal our country for their own. We must fight!

They can blackmail all of them into what they need them to do because all they have to do is say steal the new formula from Dupont or we will cause your family back in China big trouble. Most of the Chinese who are immigrating to our country now are rich corrupt bastards that have Commie government connections who use their bribe money to buy up our country and turn it into another corrupt Chinese province. The Chinese are just as bad as the Mohammedans in my book and every American should do everything they can to oppose them being here or helping them while they are here. Foreigners go home!

This stealth aircraft is indeed impressive. We have some aircraft that are even more impressive, but we borrow money just to make them. They have an economic and labor surplus, we are in an unfathomable amount of debt. That is their most powerful weapon of all.

He only grows government and entitlements which put more strain on the system. Healthcare has not even begun to work it’s “magic” regarding taking the system down. I think most people don’t understand Obama. From the various things he has said and taking into account the Marxist upbringing he had, I believe he seeks global equality at national and individual levels. He doesn’t want the US to have a dominant military that no country would dare make war with. (Insurgents aren’t nations.) He doesn’t want the US to be the dominant economy. While he gives lip service to economic growth, our economy in reality going nowhere, or even backwards, is exactly what he wants. The US weakening economically and militarily is exactly what he wants. Obama knows exactly what he is doing but doesn‘t want the people to know what he is doing because the American people would oppose him except for the Bill Ayres’ and Van Jones’s of the USA.

A conventional force that is truly formidable in terms of both size and capability. The one thing the Russians and the Chinese have over the West is an inexhaustable source of men to draw upon and a willingness to take casualties on a scale we cannot match. Stalin had a saying in WWII “Quantity has a quality all it’s own”. He was of course, right. The vast capability of the Allies during WWII to outproduce the Axis and then supply that output with trained men was the difference in the end that the Germans nor the Japanese could ever hope to match. This buildup by the Chinese and the return to regional support of traditional allies by the Russians has signaled to the world that the old Soviet/Chinese bloc has returned once again. The changes to the systems of both Gov’ts are similar…State Capitalism is what they would call it…I call it the same old Comunnist crap.

Modern weapons make an largely infantry military nothing but a big target. The more people you pack into the MLRS kill box the more casualties they have. As long as we RETAIN logistic and weapon superiority it doesn’t matter how many they have they just become goo on the ground. The German army in WW2 was technologically superior, but barely, and did not/could not produce enough Panther or Tiger tanks to overcome the T-34 series. Similarly, German fighter superiority was not sufficient to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated Soviet designs. Numbers alone did not beat the Germans, don’t forget the western allies 24/7 bombing campaign that destroyed fuel sources, military factories and the means to move that equipment to the front. Planes could not fly in bad weather and the advances in modern GPS, radar, weather prediction etc, make a comparison not Apples and Oranges but rather Peaches and potatoes.

      DMERWIN,

I would say that you a correct to a degree with regards to technology in war. Where I think we would largely disagree is in the philosophy with the reasons and goals for war.

If my goal is to intercept a marching army out of another country, take for instance Kuwait, technology is a great aspect to have. If however, my goal is to occupy another country, well, then I want human feet on the ground to keep the enemy populace in line.

Now, some will argue that technology can prevent your country from being occupied by an invasion force. Unless, of course, you find an ally or complicit country which shares a border with your enemy. In that case, I don’t care how many missiles you have. You surely don’t have millions, which is what it would take to eliminate a billion man army marching against your border.

@ belchfire, Please note that the stated munitions capacities are for internal payloads only. The F-35 can carry more firepower once air superiority is accomplished and stealth is less of a neccessity. Then you can strap on muitions to the under side of the wings like you see in almost EVERY other fighter aircraft in the current US inventory and use it for air to ground and close in air support missions.

BTW, I asked one of the engineers who designed the thing about the payload capacity first hand because I had the same apprehension about the internal payload capacity as you and I can assure you that they will carry munitions under the wing.

In order to effectively counter the Russo/Chinese alliance the West would have to go to a full industrial war footing just to get the numbers needed in order to compete for Air Superiority. The fact that we have not nearly enough frontline fighters to do that job as it satnds now should give one serious pause for thought. If the Chinese put these fighters into mass production (they have the money and the means) the paltry numbers of F22/Euro2000 planes we have won’t be able to gain that crucial Air Superiority role that we must have in order to role in the conventional forces behind them. The Russian forces have scrapped the old ways and adopted western methods of command and controil and have likely given Chinese Military brass the tarining to follow. We are losing the edge we once had. The training and skills of the man weilding the weapon is the most effective use of tech…but when that skill is matched by your oppoenet then numbers come into decisive play.

Good point. The Iraqis had a fairly complex air defense system but were afraid to turn it on for fear of wild weasels and HARM missiles. Stationary radar can easily be defeated by cruise missiles and the mobile radars usually service missile with a fairly short range. So we should have both.

I have been around awhile and I read history. The Chinese will not be a push over like the Iraqi’s. The North Koreans won’t be either. We are repeating the 1930′s all over again. Only this time it will be goodbye USA. Our pride is blinding many to the truth. The Mig 17‘s and Mig 21’s gave us a lot of trouble in Viet Nam. The latest generations of Migs and Sukois should not be taken lightly. Did anyone pay attention to the loss of the “stealth” drone? Technology can be thwarted, and huge numbers can crush a smaller force. The Chinese don’t care as much about loses. There aren’t enough F-22′s to pull the F-35′s fat out of the fire in a protracted war.

” There aren’t enough F-22′s to pull the F-35′s fat out of the fire in a protracted war.”

You say this like the F-15, F-16, and F18 are all already gone…

Stealth Fuselage + Non Stealth engines = non stealth aircraft. And the stealth engine is the hardest part of the gig…

Not to mention they have no version of the AWACS support, or a carrier fleet to move this thing around (assuming it could even get on and off a flat top)….

You know how the US obtains Air Superiority? First strike… We hit there aircraft with bombs and cruise missile before they get off the ground…. The F-22s and F15s are reserved for the small percentage that do get off the ground…

“Technology can be thwarted” Yup, your right….and that’s why the Chinese can build cheap rip offs all they want…They don’t have the 80 years of experience all our pilots draw on…. The F-22 and F-35 aren’t just the most advanced aircraft, they are flown by the best pilots in the world….

“The F-22 and F-35 aren’t just the most advanced aircraft, they are flown by the best pilots in the world….”

You got that exactly right. My best friend flew P-51D’s against Migs with both Korean and Chinese pilots in Korea. Of course, he was the best pilot around and only sat at a round table.

I took him to Sun-n-Fun for the first unofficial public viewing of the F-22. It was chasing Crazy Horse (P-51D flown by Lee Lauderback, http://www.stallion51.com/). When the F-22 out maneuvered the P-51D my friend said, “Well, the days of the P-51 are over”. He loved the P-51 and would take on anything and anyone because he was such a great pilot… until he saw the F-22. I’ll never forget the look on his face that day. He saw an aircraft that could out-turn a Mustang and the F-22 pilot had less experience than him.

I remember when the F-15′s were new, IN THE 70′S. They are retiring them constantly due to airframes reaching their fatigue limits. They will also be greatly out numbered due to the Air Force shrinking it’s size. Yes, our pilots are great, but the Chinese are planning to overwhelm them with shear numbers. If you are carrying 8 air to air missiles and you get 100% of the planes you fire at, GOOD, but if they have 10-15 to your 1, bye bye. And the great F-35 doesn’t even have the option of bugging out. IT IS TOO SLOW!! I love the Air Force and did 25 years of service. But OBUTTHEAD and the lefty loonies are gutting our military, while INCREASING wasteful spending on everything else. Wait until you young guys need medical care or expect what you were promised for retirement benefits, guess again!!!! Keep drinking the Koolaide and believing that the U.S.A. can never fall. THEY ARE DESTROYING IT DAILY! What is happening in Europe financially is coming here next. I wish it were not so, it was a bitter pill for me when I figured it out.

Actually there is a basis of where China got at least an initial start on the stealth from the West; if I recall my history right, during one of the NATO actions over Bosnia we lost a stealth fighter which China was given access to by their Balkland allies.

Of course too, Obama probably gave them whatever information they wanted from American advances across the board.

They Stole the plans from Hacking the DoD computers and by infiltrating some of our R&D operations at Los Alamos and other facilities in the 80‘s and 90’s… There were many stories back then about “Asian” agents passing secrets to the Chinese Gov’t working at these places. They got some rudimentary stealth technology from a crashed F-117 in Bosnia back in the 90′s and de-engineered it. We were unable to bomb it into smithereens because the rebels…knowing it’s value…posted hundreds of civilians around the wreckage…figuring that‘s what we’d do.

I agree with BOMUSTGO. They are to provide a decreased turn radius, and make it more agile. The down side is it provides more drag countered by more lift. Also it is more surface area and decreases it’s stealth, countered by increased close combat ability. Once these get some good engines America’s main advantages are the pilots skills and stealth. I can see a F-22 easily taking it one on one but losing in one vs a squadron which will most likely be the case. While I was initially excited about the F-35′s and their multi-role capabilities these things would be comparable on a one on one basis. As for the AWACS argument these things would have the numbers to get to the AWACS and destroy them, unless of course we have a stealth version of the AWACS. But as it is now we don’t have enough planes to counter this, and don’t get me started comparing the ground forces.
