See the Purple Squirrel Discovered in Pennsylvania!

You might not believe your eyes, but they aren’t fooling you. You’re really looking at a purple squirrel discovered in Pennsylvania:

Purple Squirrel Found in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania

The odd creature was discovered by Percy and Connie Emert in Jersey Shore, PA on Sunday.

“We have bird feeders out in our yard, and the squirrels are constantly into them,” Connie told Accuweather.com. “My husband traps them and then sets them free elsewhere so they don’t get into your bird feeders.”

She said she had seen the little creature on the property before, but no one would believe her.

“I kept telling my husband I saw a purple one out in the yard. ‘Oh sure you did’ he kept telling me,” she added. “Well, he checked the trap around noon on Sunday and sure enough, there it was.”

The Emerts plan to release the squirrel back into the wild in the next few days. As for why he is purple, they don’t know. But they swear they had nothing to do with it. The Accuweather team has some theories, though, ranging from him getting into paint to even falling into a port-a-potty.

By the way, the pictures above are from the squirrels Facebook page. You can “like” him here. But that’s not all. He even has a Twitter account:

You can “follow” him here.

As Buzzfeed points out, this isn’t the first time a purple squirrel has baffled the world. Another one was discovered in 2008 in the U.K. At the time, the Telegraph cited a wildlife expert who thought the squirrel had gotten into some old printer cartridges and had groomed the color into its fur. He believed back then the squirrel would eventually shed the funky hue as his hair fell out and new hair grew back.

Have a theory? Let us know in the comments.

Better contact Erin Brockovich. There’s reason for a class action lawsuit against someone in PA for creating this. Maybe it’s from the natural gas fracking. Darn, now the EPA will get involved.

We used to have a huge“ white” cat and my daugher would “tie dye”
(purple, blue and green sometimes red) this animal!

People would ride by the house and slow down to stare at this cat.
      It was hilarious!!
Oh yeah.. the cat also had a blue eye and a yellow eye on top of that!!!

WHOA!! Wait a sec!! I started 2 albino “sanctuaries”, like 30 YEARS ago!! They’re getting $$$?? Why?? The wildlife assoc I co-founded when I was doing that would prob like to know!! I started caring for orphaned & injured squirrels when I was 16, (more than 30yrs ago!), and working for an animal hospital. These critters are actually VERY easily tamed/trained. Had 2 3-legged ones that were litter-box trained.

We all know why. Global Warming…

Why is it not hibernating now. It got up to soon and the purple is left over natural hormone that is related to hibernation. If it got the full sleep it would have wore off to be grey.

Divided, I celebrated all morning for his wins. I can only hope the other states are as smart because he is the only real choice we have. Go Santorum! But right now, I want them to let the purple squirrel go & they can release it into my neighborhood because I & my neighbors would be proud to have the silly thing here & I would have to feed it. Of course, I would. My husband doesn’t allow me any pets right now, but this wouldn’t really count. Give me purple squirrels any day!

Well, this is a new one for me. Can’t say I ever saw or heard of one before. Interesting. We live fairly close to the Fernald Plant in Ohio. People claim the deer glow in the dark there. Just kidding on my part but some of the locals really believe this. If they see this squirrel hard telling what they will come up with.

Yep, you made the connection. I live in NE Pa. (about 50 miles from Jersey Shore). There was a story on the local news 2 nights ago that the town contacted the producers of the “Jersey Shore” show to make an episode there, and were turned down. It looks like the ‘purple’ squirrel is a stunt to get the town’s name national exposure, so maybe the producers of the show will reconsider. It’s too coincidental for my taste.
