‘USA, USA, USA!’: See the Speech That Got a Standing Ovation in Congress Today

Representative Mike Kelly, speaking on the House floor today, managed something very rare in the history of the institution – he got a standing ovation. Applause is usually forbidden in the house, but Kelly‘s blistering attack on regulatory red tape and Washington’s culture of control was apparently so powerful that several of his fellow house members couldn’t resist showing their support, clapping, standing up and shouting “USA! USA! USA!”

Would you applaud this way? See Kelly’s speech below and decide for yourself:

Tellin’ it like it is, and they move on to the next bloviating non-binding resolution. Cut the pay for the senate and congress in half and make the work year May through October. Eliminate “campaign season” and let their deeds do their campaigning. Also, make the entire body of the senate or congress attend the open floor sessions. I, for one, am tired of seeing empty seats. Additionally, a “filibuster” must be attended by the entire body and SOMEONE must speak for the entire time. I am so sick of the rules they create so they do not have to be “inconvenienced”. Sure, they couldn’t open a ballpark because the mirror in the bathroom was a quarter an inch too high. Oh yeah. I believe that. That‘s for sure God’s truth.

Yeah, it’s outrageous the way businesses in the US are stifled because their mirrors are 1/4″ off. Happens all the time. All these city inspectors are out with their tape measures shutting down new developments because their bathroom mirrors don’t meet the standard height. It’s in the news every day. Those city inspectors will do everything they can, under the direction of the city government, to stop any new development. All cities look for any reason they can to shut down new developments because they are afraid the Feds will swoop down and penalize them for the mirrors in their bathrooms that are 1/4 off. The lame stream media doesn’t report about all these closures due to mirror heights, but it happens all the time!

This is one of those speeches congressmen give to cspan when there isn’t another person in the building except his family sitting in the upper seats. Idiots.

STEVE-IN-PA, I must say I agree with you……. EXCEPT…… sometimes a person plays a part, not saying this man does but I have become open eyed. I believe MOST of what we see in Washington is nothing more than a scripted play. I truly hate do be so defeatest. I never wanted to be. Then I ask you, Eric holder was found in contempt, but his own office refused to prosecute. How much did we the tax payer pay to watch this broadway play that ended up with nothing happening?

I am from Florida. I like Congressman Allen West. I am white and dont give a sheet that hes black, so what. A good man is a good man. A story just came out in the past few days about his support from his former troops. He was a LT Colonel in the Army that defied orders that ultimately wound up saving soldiers lives. I like that. Think for yourself. I applaud that. Dont EVER follow orders blindly. Think for yourself. So why then did he vote FOR the NDAA? The National Defense Authorization Act empowers the United States government to arrest you, NEVER tell you what the charges are, NEVER allow you to see a lawyer, NEVER allow you to see your family, NEVER allow you to have a court date and hold you TILL HELL FREEZES OVER because they THINK you MIGHT have done something wrong to help terrorists. Allen West defied orders from superiors to save the lives of his men but was willing to put his name on the dotted line to sign away your rights.

What I am saying is, let time tell. Be carefull.

I’m from Butler originally (Mike Kelly’s home town in western Pa) and Mike is one of my 87 year old father’s best friend. Just this past Monday, I visited Mike at his office in DC with my two sons and husband while on vacation there. I just have to say (this is my first time commenting…I’m a lurker)….for all you who are critical of Mike and for those of you who love him, HE IS THE REAL DEAL! Butler is hard scrabble town and people from that part of the country don’t pull any punches! Mike is one special guy! My father is one tough old coot, a WW11 vet, who‘s been around the block and back and didn’t have the time (he worked three jobs when I was growing up) nor the patience for BS’ers, and he is so proud to call Mike his friend! We need to recruit him for VP! In person, he overwhelms you with his charisma and character! He is honest , doesn‘t need this ’job’, and went to Washington to make a difference…FOR REAL!!! He represents ALL of us and has what it takes to lead this country!

Soflamama- I truly like that you have total confidence in this man. I would ask you to realize this though. If a man, or woman, ANY man or woman, were to TRULY be AGAINST the establishment then you must realize that their lives are in danger. IN REAL LIFE. I know it sounds like some kind of a book written fantasy but I would ask this of you, Does the President and/or Congress of the US TRULY decide policy or do the bankers that we are indebted to decide policy? Those bankers are the FED (not a part of the Federal Government as it sounds, but a privately owned entity of rich bankers throughout the world), The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund or IMF. If you believe truly that the President and the Congress of the United States TRULY control what goes on in this country then so be it, I will not try to change your mind, I will say this though, Bankers control EVERYTHING Congress controlls NOTHING. Then again YOU have to figure this out for yourself. God Bless

I love this guy! … and yes JZS, this does happen all the time, not just mirrors, but the government’s regulations are completely insane in many cases. I’ve heard probably about 200 stories or so similar to the mirrors being 1/4 inch off. I’ve heard other people with mirrors too high or low, pet cages 1/4 inch too short, wrong label sizes, plastic bags made illegal… so many incredibly stupid regulations that cost businesses fortunes, cause massive job loss, and even put some innocent people in prison for reasons that are completely insane. Ever hear about the guy that went to prison for mailing tulips with the wrong mailing label or the one that went to prison for putting captured lobsters in plastic bags? Everyone should know about the corrupt lawyers that go around suing small businesses for violations of almost completely unknown regulations – just like the mirrors being too low.

JZS, you are kidding right? There are people who are “handicapped” and that’s their job, to go in to the bathrooms of establishments and measure them and then sue because the mirror isn’t the right height. Yes, I believe that this government would do that. I have a city code violation inspector who hit me for branches too close to the alley (not supposed to be closer than a foot) and hanging over my fence, but not 14 feet off the ground. I was walking to my car when she went down my alley and she didn’t get out of her car and measure….she saw my bumper sticker for Glenn Beck and the local conservative talk radio station and had to find something. I had 3 branches sticking through the fence, while the black neighbor next to me has a chain link fence with trees intertwined and hanging over and the lady down at the end of the alley has a bush that actually pokes INTO the alley and it brushes my car every time I go by. I was hit because I had “building materials” lying flat on my driveway (So no varmits could hide). I had to get them all 6 inches up off the ground, so now I have a rat problem.

continued at JZS, I also got hit because my crepe myrtle trees weren’t 14 feet off the ground over the sidewalk in the front, and I’m home all day, no one came out and measuered, they just drove by. If I don’t make corrections, they will send a city worker out to do it for me and then bill me or put a lien on my property. I know because I have a friend who has a creek in their back yard and they complained to the city (it’s city maintained) that there was a bee’s nest there. The city came and removed it and sent them the bill. You better believe the city regulations are out of control and if you don’t, you’re living in the land of lollipops and unicorns.

Let me ask you something, why do you bother with this site at all? If you love having your freedoms taken away, just vote for you racist Prez and be done with it. You obviously love situations likeGibson Guitar where “your man” Obama had armed Fed agents break into a legitimate American business over trumped-up charges of using illegal wood.

Maybe you loved it when Obama/Holder refused to condem the racially-motivated attacks on G. Zimmerman. Not a word from those two racists on the vigilantism called for by the racist NAACP and NBP haters.

Maybe it was the blindness Obama/Holder showed when the NBP held clubs in their hands at the Philly polling booth in ‘08.

We had a multipurpose building that was not allowed to open because the handrail on the handicapped ramp was 1/4 in too small. The code enforcement officer said that a person in a wheelchair would have difficulty with the width. If I’m in a wheelchair trying to go up a ramp I probably got both hands on the wheels not on the handrail. Be kinda tough pulling a wheelchair up a ramp with one hand on a handrail. The million dollar plus building sat idle while they fought that one out. Regulations will kill this country eventually.

Why bother? It’s a brick wall with that one. Funny thing is he’s better at doing his job than that Socialist School for Useful Idiots reject Encinom.

      @The Monk:

The reason libertarians are mostly (not all) silent on this measure is…ok, it’s going in the right direction of thought. The speech was good, and spot on about the red tape of regulations that stifle business (regulations are even more expensive than any proposed tax increase short of 50%) growth and the inherent costs they bear.

However, the bill he is promoting is pandering without any substance. The wording, to my understanding, as the bill stands right now, still contains the typo where we would need to be at 94% unemployment for regulators to stop cold. For the sake of argument, let’s assume the correction, and we see no regulation until 6% or less employment. What does that do about current nonsense regulations, excessive numbers of bureaucrats on the dole, pointless departments that offer nothing, excessively large bills that have hidden regulations/taxes/gifts to doners (get a better spellchecker blaze), and campaign donation laws that allow politicians to be bought out, granting their lobby firms unfettered access? Afterall, most of the laws on the books are written by lobby groups and businesses or banks with access and power. Most regulations cripple competition from below.

Afterall, Rockefeller stated, “Competition is a sin.”

We own a business in the building industry and it’s not just the out of control regs, it’s the inconsistancy. The regulation book is so think, you CAN”T comply with all the regulations. So what you do is call out your inspector and ask them what will pass. This VARIES from inspector to inspector. ANd the regulations change! And they sometimes change in the MIDDLE OF THE PROJECT. When we started our house you did not have to drywall your crawl space, when we called for our final inspection they wanted to know why we didn’t drywall our crawl space. THE HOUSE IS BUILT! Now in order to get access to the crawl space you have to enter through a tiny trap door – just how exactly are we supposed to get sheets of drywall down there?! This is the kind of stuff government does to people.

This guy painted a picture where if his ballpark could have been opened, the only people really making money was the ball park owner (potentially $ millions) and ball players, if professional. All the other jobs are low-paying service industry jobs, hot dog sellers, cashiers, with no benefits, and are seasonal.

Why didn’t he use as an example the fact that Obama is giving away billions of dollars in construction contracts to Chinese construction companies (which will import Chinese workers) to rebuild America’s infrastructure? Instead, thousands of constructions jobs will be lost to Americans as well as billions in revenue to American companies. He could have really driven home the point using this example.

Why didn’t he use all the outsourcing done to China, India, South America et al. as an example? Without a manufacturing base, no economy can sustain. He didn’t choose that because those are real jobs with decent pay and benefits. This example would have gotten him a bid for the Presidency.

If Kelly is REALLY interested in American jobs, he will put the pressure on to tear up the current trade agreements, limit imports, and prohibit outsourcing, instead of worrying about a couple low-paying service industry jobs at a ball park.

His speech is a joke, and those who applaud it are gullible buying into the well-charged speech instead of listening to what he’s really saying. I remain unimpressed. Typical politician. Same bull-sh*t, different day.

The mirror height regulation is absolutely 100% true and has been on the books for going on two decades now. Not only has it been reported multiple times by multiple major mainstream print, radio, and television news agencies, but you can go to a government website and read the regulation for yourself. Anyone who has any practical knowledge of commercial construction knows this, and anyone else could have found it within 30 seconds using a search engine of their choice.

Don’t look now but your ignorance are showing.

To: Maverick4harlot….I am just back from vacation and along with my stop in DC, I was fortunate enough to visit Williamsburg, Virginia. It was there, at the founding of our country, many a patriot risked their lives, their fortunes, their families for something better. I still believe there are patriots out there who will risk everything for this country. Even at my age, I retain my idealism and also still believe that individuals can make a difference. I , for one, would not be deterred over fear from the ‘world bank’ and I don’t think Mike Kelly is afraid either. This country is worth fighting for.

Look, it sounds good, and it’s clear he has understanding of the cost of regulation. However, all of congress does. We have to stop thinking people creating regulations actually think them helpful to business. They know full well they stifle growth. It’s done entirely on purpose.

This bill he’s pushing is just lip service. It offers nothing substantive. It just seems and sounds good. Let alone the current version as written still contains the typo last I checked.

The American Disabilities Act while noble in thought has had incredible unforseen consequenses. They now hire “specialty consultants” to police it. Jobs that don’t lay a brick or even have a clue how a building gets constructed. But, they are the arbiters. Millions of jobs created that just monitor real economic expansion and it destroys it. No common sense anymore. OSHA was a great idea. It’s now out of control. Ask any business in construction what they really think.

I’ll answer the question about OSHA. They kill jobs, they fine people people for having generator a few inches out. write tickets for no hard hat even where it’s not required. you have to take the day off to fight it, or just pay it. then you get fire and you never did anything wrong. ask the big job sit people. it happens all day every day. it’s not their fault though. Congress made the law they use to harass the working people. the funny thing is, it’s union loving Dems that pushed it. one of their main targets is union workers. they hate each other. We can’t talk honestly about it because every time you bring it up, the thug liberals lie about what your trying to do. like the libs on this post.

You are correct about the ADA. I previously owned a restaurant and on the first day the gimps rolled in on their wheelchairs, looking and pointing at things they didn’t like, although the space recently passed inspection and C of O was granted. They threatened to shut the place down until an elevator or stair lift was installed to the second floor. I had to go to court (and pay for a lawyer) to stop their attempts at “enforcing the spirit of the ADA.” I won and none of the bastards ever spent a nickel in my restaurant.

@MIKE …you just called people in wheelchairs gimps which I have to say as politically incorrect as that is…it made me choke on my coffee laughing. The same thing happened here in Pittsburgh with a bar called “Froggies”…..it was a bar that was very popular….located in town…but it was located in one of those old skinny 3 story buildings that were constructed WAY WAY before the ADA. The wheelchair gang demanded that the owner install ramps and elevators….the owner said he could neither afford that nor is there physical room to accomplish that and so they fought….with the owner offering his staff to carry the wheelchair crowd anywhere in the 3 story bar they wanted to go. Not good enough. Froggies is now no longer in business. So your use of the word gimps is actually funny…because the “gimps” really do know how to “gimp” things up to the point they would rather an establishment go out of business altogether….than not be in compliance with what at times are rules and regulations that cannot have a legitimate work around put in place. Nobody wants to be in a wheelchair…..but at the same time a person in a wheelchair can never be a shortstop for a major league ball team either……the same limitations that wheelchair bound people have…..are of no more importance than the financial or physical structure limitations that some business owners are faced with…why are the wheelchair bounds needs any more or less important than a business owners?

      Why NDAA?
AUMF- Autrhorized Use of Military Force.

Reason? Just my opinion, but….We no longer know who is within our own borders, who are legal citizens and who’s against us. Make sense now?

Like that whacko that killed our service men at Ft. Hood! Got trained by our military and he in turn, decides it’s okay to take out our Army troops. And take a another look. You seen or heard about the violence in Chicago, right? Who do you think is responsible for those deaths? Oh yeah…Mexican Drug Cartels battling for turf. My god, how did they ever get to Chicago?

You ever stop and wonder why Obama stayed away from the topic of the numerous deaths in Chicago? Go figure, it’s not only bad for his homie Emmanuel, he would have to save face in saying our borders have been breeched by cartels! This being an election year, none of it should be a surprise.

But the sole reason I could only come up with, as to why they wouldn’t come right out with the facts, is an old one filled with irony. Brace yourself for this one…

Doing so, would present a threat to national security.
