Everything is bigger in Texas. Including the hockey brawls.
On Sunday, the Corpus Christi IceRays were taking on the Texas Tornadoes in a North American Hockey League (NAHL) game. By the third period, the IceRays took a 4-1 lead. That’s when the IceRays noticed the Tornados had sent out their “enforcers” for the ensuing faceoff. And that’s also when things started to get out of hand. Yahoo! Sports explains what happened next:
[IceRays Coach Justin] Quenneville knew what was coming. Sure enough, Texas forward Skyler Spiller stalked Perry D’Arrisso of the Ice Rays after the draw and then sucker-punched him from behind, sparking an energetic line brawl between the NAHL rivals.
The game’s announcers gave an actual blow-by-blow:
The Corpus Christi Caller has more:
Just two seconds later on the ensuing faceoff, Tornado forward Skyler Spiller jumped D’Arrisso from behind at center ice, leading to five simultaneous fights.
“I have absolutely no idea (why it happened),” D’Arrisso said. “I went to the faceoff and (Spiller) didn’t say anything to me.
“The puck dropped and I was looking at it the whole time and I turned around and he was coming right me. I just turtled before I got knocked in the face and everybody jumped in.”
The bad blood also spilled off the ice, with IceRays general manager Pat Dunn engaging in a shouting match with Tornado coach Tony Curtale and assistant Jason Bloomingburg, who briefly played in Corpus Christi during the IceRays’ minor-pro years.
It was the second time the teams got into an all-out brawl this season.
You can see a fan’s-eye view of the fight, that also includes a few middle fingers and curse words, here.

Report Post »Kalshion
Posted on January 18, 2012 at 2:44am@Rob Adkerson
I think what he means is that outside of the fights, you wil see real sportmanship amongst not only the hockey players, but for the most part, the fans as well. I‘ve ’never‘ seen fights break out amongst hockey fans in the past six years that I’ve been going to hockey games, but I HAVE seen fights ‘constantly’ break out between Basket Ball and Football, then again, there is very little sportsmanship in both of those games anyway.
The fact of the matter is that while fights in Hockey do happen, they rarely – if ever – get to the degree that you’ll see in FB/BB. Not to mention, that the last game I went to that had a fight break out, you had players on both sides attempting to break it up and in one case, helping a player from the opposite team who got hit pretty hard.
That’s the difference. In Hockey, you do see real sportsmanship – yes there are fights – but that’s part of the game. In FB/BB, it’s every man for himself, and there is very little sportsmanship.

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 1:24pm@Jas0707….Yet, off the ice, hockey players are the most normal, law-abiding people out of all four of the major North American team sports. There’s a reason for that.
Report Post »saranda
Posted on January 18, 2012 at 2:45pm@john Koenig – the reason is that they are mostly Canadians and Euros. Sport seems to attract mostly the well mannered Americans as well, although Roenick might be the exception.

You would think these boys were testonerone filled bullies just always raring to go but you would be wrong. Off the ice they are some of the nicest most well spoken boys you would want to meet.
Think about it… how often do you hear about hockey players getting in trouble other than on the ice? They know how to leave it on the ice. That is sportsmanship!

Do you feel the same way when a pitcher beans a batter and the benches clear? or when a tennis player headbutts the other player after the match. How about benches clearing in basketball. How about when soccer fans brawl in the stands…….I guess the differene is in hockey fighting is legit, though this guy IMO deserves a healthy suspention.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 2:11pmYou realize, of course, that MMA is the fastest growing sport right now – right? That has lots of fighting. I had season tickets to our local minor leagues (17-21year olds) for 4 years. They’ve actually been putting the damper on fighting for some time now.
But lets be honest, we don’t watch hockey for the ice skating anymore than we watch car racing for the colorful, fast cars…
P.S. I’ve heard Football, Futbol (as they say for Soccer), and Rugby are all pretty rough too. Perhaps the weenies out there would prefer that these men pick up sword and shield & guns and ammo and have more wars to take out their competitive aggression…

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 12:29amFights happen in Basketball, Soccer, Baseball and Football all the time. The only difference is no one gets suspended in Hockey because it is part of the game, like it or not.
What happened here from the footage shown was a team losing and the enforcers came out which is normal, the other team wasnt bright enough to do the same. Usually there is talk at the line saying lets drop em when the puck drops and they go at it, it gets the fans into it as well as gets your team pumped up.
This was obviously a 1 sided fight and the other wanted no part of it as he skated away while the other tossed his gloves and stick down. It should have stopped right there and he should have been giving an unsportsmanlike 10 minute penalty. 1 guy being a dick doesnt make all of hockey bad though. what happened after was everyone sticking up for there team mates which should always happen in any sport.

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 1:08pmThat was absolutely disgusting. The coach should be massively fined if not banned from the league for that kind of goonery. You want to have your players fight the other team? Fine. But you don‘t attack someone who’s back is turned and blindside them.
Report Post »Balrog28
Posted on January 17, 2012 at 1:34pmSorry dude – but maybe the coach provoked the players to fight, but what that player did off the draw was not start a fight – he sucker-punched an opposing player who was attempting to play the game. A coach is not at fault for that behavior.
So if your kid chose to go commit a misdemeanor or a felony, you should be blamed and not allowed to be a parent anymore?
It’s called Personal Responsibility – something that is not being taught anywhere anymore…

Posted on January 17, 2012 at 1:20pmWrong Rowgue. These are all kids working there way towards US hockey scholarships. In fact 7 of the kids on the Tornadoes and Icerays are already committed to Div 1 schools. If they were minor Pro they would not be eligible. http://www.nahl.com/college/
Report Post »Personally I don’t understand why schools recruit from this league with so many better leagues, but I guess the options for US kids is limited to this and the USHL (also a junir league). More US kids are playing hockey and the Canadian leagues are filled to the max so we keep inventing these new leagues. Personally my kids will go to Canada to get better competitiion once they are of junior age (16ish) and hopefully chase the US scholarship route (if they are good enough). There is no better sport than hockey.

The easiest thing for you to do is “don’t watch”. If we banned everything with which someone disagrees (or is offended by) we’d all be living inside hermetically sealed bubbles and would have no human contact whatsoever.
