RICHMOND, Va. (The Blaze/AP) — In the most significant change to U.S. cigarette packs in 25 years, the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday released nine new warning labels that depict in graphic detail the negative health effects of tobacco use.
Among the images to appear on cigarette packs are rotting and diseased teeth and gums and a man with a tracheotomy smoking.
Also included among the labels are: the corpse of a smoker, diseased lungs, and a mother holding her baby with smoke swirling around them. They include phrases like “Smoking can kill you” and “Cigarettes cause cancer” and feature graphic images to convey the dangers of tobacco, which is responsible for about 443,000 deaths in the U.S. a year.
Each label includes a national quit smoking hotline number.
The labels will take up the top half – both front and back – of a pack of cigarette packs. Warning labels also must appear in advertisements and constitute 20 percent of an ad. Cigarette makers have until the fall of 2012 to comply.
Business Insider compiled the new graphic images. Below, we’ve chosen the top five most disturbing:

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 10:56ami laugh when i hear people like john dean and others call the conservatives and tea-partiers the ‘gloom and doom’ party. don’t they get it? there are some people who are going to smoke no matter what. they pay higher insurance premiums. this is a free country (at least for the liberals.)
wait until they include a vial of a necrotic lung submerged in formaldehyde, or a pinch of the cremated remains of a smoker in each pack. i can just visualize the posters plastered on the doors of Burger King and McD’s as you go in to buy a triple cheeseburger. when they want to make a point there is no limit, but if the MAJORITY repeat MAJORITY to make a point it has to pass the racist test, and the bigot test, and the non-religious test, and the revolutionary test. frankly, i’m tired of their tests! I WANT THEM OUT IN 2012 and i want US to hold the conservatives/republicans feet to the fire just as much.it’s time we start running OUR country instead of it running us!
only one way. get involved! stay involved! VOTE! it’s time we put up or shut up! if you have young adults of voting age, talk to them. impress upon them that this is not a popularity contest or a rebellion vote. this isn‘t an ’anti’ vote. it is a vote for their future. if they vote for him, so be it. it is their right. just so when they are asked in an exit poll, (this time, unlike last) ‘what does obama stand for?’ they will have some idea other than he is black, or he speaks well. answers given in 2010.

Do I promote tobacco use? No. but I will say genetics plays a big roll. Beside why is the government sticking their nose in our business? Can smokers sue because the law specifically targets a group of individuals and depicts them in a negative way? Isn’t that predudice?
Can I sell the Koran labeled with pictures showing an Islamic Jihadist beheading an “infidel”? After all, Jihad kills and people should be warned.
Can I sell Gay Pride flags with pictures of Aids victims on the labels? After all, homosexuality can be dangerous to your health and people should be warned.
And why aren’t Beer & Alcohol companies required to show pictures of drunks, the livers of alcoholics or the body of someone who was killed by a drunk driver? After all, drinking kills and people should be warned.
The list of products and activities that “aren’t good for you and/or can kill you” goes on & on & on & on…………I guess the government is going to require “warning” pictures on all of them? Right?.
One more example of the government intruding on & dictating individual choice as well as free enterprise. And I felt the same way when the government mandated those written warning statements on cigarettes.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 10:49amThe irony/hyprocrisy(you choose) of this whole campaign is that the entire funding for the CHIPS program (visualize the Dems surrounding themselves with human props) comes from the federal taxes on cigarettes. Since the settlement, I have lived in five different states and have yet to see any such program enacted. Invest in building our future, as frankly I could care less about what type of government other countries have or what their ideology is. If they threaten us overtly through an act of war then we should retaliate with everything we got. Our position in the world is much more determined by our economic strength, not the size of our military industrial complex or military spending.

Americans need to get off their ideological horses, particularly the religious ones, and stop trying to control other people. The best approach in any situation is to ignore the zealots on both sides. Examples… most we agree that late term abortions should be stopped, but woman should have the right to reproductive choice including early term abortions…. US citizens should have the right to bear arms, but there is no rationale for them to have military grade assault weapons.

What about my car, do I need a mangled warning on that too? Oh, and lets also put a picture on every power pole because people just don’t know the dangers of electricity. Do we need to inform people of sexual diseases on condoms and forms of birth control too? The list for this can just go on and on…. and let’s not forget everything that is known to the state of California to cause cancer.

A little over a year later he had cancer. He started because everyone older than him in his family smoked-including his parents. He went in the Navy at 17, when skippers would take a ship out two hundred miles offshore so the guys could buy cigaretts for 25 cents per pack without the taxes. After everything has been said and done all these years we still have two smokers in our family. One was with his Dad when he died, one a foolish kid. I agree with ATI, nothing will work, ho-hos or bad pictures on packs, it is a decision only the smoker can make. My husband was a tough guy, but he said quitting was the hardest thing he ever did. His dying was even harder, and he never blamed anyone but himself. I will hope for the best that some will escape this poison.

Posted on June 21, 2011 at 10:58pmSo we are going to make smokers see photos of other smokers and the consequences of smoking every time they light up, but anti-abortion groups shouldn’t show pictures and testimony of mothers who have had abortions and the damage it can and does cause to all involved? DUMB. If every mother to be saw what the doctor does when an abortion is “performed”, I know we would see far less of them.
Report Post »content warning, if you can’t stomach seeing even just this simple drawn out depiction of what happens, you are probably normal and should be anti-abortion.

Posted on June 22, 2011 at 9:56amWhat are you saying. . . that you hope that Obama smokes so that he gets cancer? What kind of comment was that? While you (and I) don‘t agree with Obama’s platform or policies, we should not stoop to the level of vitriol seen on the Huffington Post comments about President Bush, Sarah Palin or any other lightning rod conservative/liberatarian politicians. Let’s have some civility and remember that we are all Americans and human beings. I‘m the last person to preach let’s-all-get-along-kumbaya-kumbaya, but comments like that by SPANKDAMONKEY just fan the flames of anger between parties.

Posted on June 22, 2011 at 11:52pmWe’ve got outfits like these anti-smoking campaigner‘s on one hand and on the other we’ve got Hollywood using cigarettes in their movies for the cool factor. The cool factor is a greater influence. Maybe they should talk to their pals in Hollywood.
