See the Viral Video of a Man Reclaiming His Stolen Bike

SEATTLE (AP) — Jake Gillum loves his bike. So when it got stolen in Portland, Ore., while he was on a date, he was determined to get it back.
The quest seemed hopeless, but a week of poring over online postings for his 2009 carbon fiber Fuji paid off when he spotted the road bike offered for sale in Seattle. That sparked an elaborate interstate sting operation last weekend in which Gillum not only got his bicycle back but used it to chase down the suspect before police arrested him.
Gillum documented it all on YouTube under the username Simon Jackson. (WARNING! Adult language)
“This is why you don’t steal from bicyclists!” Gillum shouts as he trails the suspect while recording with his phone. “Because we care about our rides! Because I will go 160 miles to get my $2,500 bike back! You are going to jail!”
In an interview Thursday, the 28-year-old added: “Best feeling in the world, seeing that guy get locked in the police car.”
The success of the sting heartened bicyclists around the world as the video spread. Such stings are far from unheard of – there have been at least four in Seattle alone recently, two involving the same suspect – but they don’t typically wind up on video that goes viral.
In May, Dave O’Hern got one of his two stolen bikes back when its new owner took it to a repair shop that recognized a crack in the frame. The new owner, University of Washington law student Noel Merfeld, helped O’Hern set up a sting to catch the guy Merfeld bought it from. Police showed up and arrested a man who had been arrested in a similar bust two months earlier.
Also in Seattle, Matt Goyer retrieved his stolen bicycle last month after seeing it on Craigslist. The seller let him take it for a test spin – and Goyer never looked back.
“People have a right to reclaim their stolen property. It belongs to them,” said Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb. “Obviously, the first and best method to do that is through the police.”
Gillum’s ordeal began Aug. 3 in Portland when he realized his bike was missing and filed a police report. He has no car and uses it to travel to odd jobs and yard work around town, as well as for exercise. Over the next week, he checked online obsessively and on Aug. 9 saw it advertised in Seattle.
“I flipped out – just started jumping in the air and yelling,” Gillum said. “Immediately I thought, `I have to go up there and get it, no matter what.’”
He talked it over with friends, as well as his dad, who gave him some sage advice: Don’t be an idiot. Don’t beat up the guy.
A plot began to take shape.
Gillum and two friends, Chris Williams and Williams’ younger brother, Shannon Hardie, created the online persona Simon Jackson with a fake email account. They also used a cellphone app to call the seller and make it appear they were calling from Seattle. When the seller sent photos of the bike, Gillum became even more certain it was his.
The trio drove north and met the seller outside a grocery store. The others called police as Gillum started chatting with the seller, later identified as Craig Eric Ackerman, also of Portland.
Gillum said that about 40 minutes later, police still hadn’t arrived and the seller seemed to be getting nervous, so Gillum agreed to buy it and said he needed to walk inside a nearby bank. A teller told him she would call security, and Gillum walked back outside and began filming.
“Here’s the deal. I live in Portland, and you stole my bicycle,” Gillum says.
“All right,” the nervous seller replies. “I don’t know what you want me to say.”
“I would like you to apologize.”
“For what?”
“For stealing my bicycle.”
The seller insisted he lives in Seattle and bought the bicycle off Craigslist, though he acknowledged knowing it was stolen. When Gillum says police are on the way, Ackerman runs away, so Gillum hops on his newly recovered bike, starts chasing and repeats: “He cannot get away from me!”
Police arrived and arrested Ackerman for investigation of possessing and trafficking in stolen property. He has not been charged, and his lawyer, Holli Giffin, declined to comment because of the pending investigation, except to say, “We have a lot of concerns about the way things have been portrayed.”
Whitcomb, the police spokesman, cautioned people against using stings without being absolutely sure they’re right, which can be difficult using a picture on an Internet message board.
“Personal injury is not worth your bike,” he said.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 5:52amStuff like this has been going on for 4-5 days, but not just the Blaze. Three days ago I had the identicle problem here as you’re now having. I also had minor problems with Drudge and others. Called my provider who pointed out that others were having a problem with msn and yahoo. Yesterday, I was on a site where I could click on a hyperlink that would sometimes direct me that what I was looking for wasn’t there. Click again (sometimes a few times) and suddenly what I was looking for came up. It’s happened to me on a second computer also, so I think it’s either the internet itself has a problem or my provider, which is FIOS. If you don’t have the latter, I would almost bet it’s the former. Hope that helps.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 11:17amBIKES SHOULD BE REGISTERED LIKE MOTORCYCLES
Today, bikes cost a lot of money and can cause injury like other vehicles. Bikes should be registered and be required to post a plate like cars. No one can then claim they found the bike. I am sure the small cost of registration with the reduction of theft would be worth it. If that thief had been injured why trying to escape the bike owner would face serious charges and could be sued. If the bike was his he should have called the police and let them handle it.

Also at the last stop on a particular subway, there a place outside with bike racks where people keep their bikes, so they can hop on them and ride the remaining distance to work.

Very good. The same goes for all the 10 Commandments. Scratch a liar, find a thief. Murdering the truth. Stealing the truth with a lie. Etc. Some are harder to see, but can be found. If only we all applied what you said to everything, this world would be heaven on earth. Again, thanks for bringing that up.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 1:00pmThat’s an interesting quote, but inaccurate. Pride, or rebellion, is the root of all sins. In the words of Satan when he fell, “Non serviam.“ ”I will not serve.” We do not sin against our neighbor, but against God alone. However, we can sin against God BY harming out neighbor in some way. Almost all offenses against our neighbor are some form of injustice, that is denying someone what is their due. That can be interpreted as theft, and the root cause of crimes against our neighbor. It is not, however, the root of sin itself.

True. But the sin of pride can be easily seen in breaking the First Commandment. In a word, where there is sin, there is all sin. But, that is not to say that ‘grave’ sin, doesn’t exist. Your’s is another good comment. I would say, Whatever keeps us in His Grace, is a good thing.

Report Post »Would it be excusable for an 18 wheeler to run you over because they didn’t see your “little” car/truck?
I commute by bike about 3,000 miles a year and I have yet to see a fellow cyclist operating their vehicle in traffic while text messaging or stuffing their face with a Mcmuffin. Unfortunately, I see a distracted driver behind the wheel of about 3 out of every 5 vehicles on the road.
Lastly no one is required to drive at the speed limit; in fact you are required to stay below the speed limit. If a car, scooter, horse buggy, tractor or bicycle is going too slow for you then you can go around them, the slower vehicle is not required to speed up to suit you.
You do not own the road!

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 10:01amOne of the biggest gripes I hear from motorists is that we should only ride on the “trails”. The “trails” are for walkers, runners, and folks riding comfort type bikes. We can average 16 – 21 miles per hour over a 25 to 35 mile ride. That includes speeds well above 30 by groups comprising anywhere from 2 to 20 riders. We can’t ride that way on the “trails”. They’re too narrow, too.
Another complaint, and I say this even though I don’t ride in urban areas, is that cyclists should stay on the sidewalk. First of all, it’s against the law here in Kentucky. And, one of the most dangerous things about riding on the sidewalk is that motorists don’t see you. You both arrive at an intersection, the cyclists is going straight and the motorist decides to turn right. Not good. I’ve almost his UK students riding that way. I just shake my head and stay alert.
Part of our responsibility as cyclists, too , is being good citizens by obeying the law and doing what is reasonable AND SAFE to help motorists get around us.
I also noticed another post on hear refering to “those liberals” on bikes. Probably so in CA, OR, WA states and much of Colorado. Hear in central Kentucky most “roadies” are conservatives. We can always spot a liberal that the bike start location. The body on their old beater is held together by all the lefty bumper stickers. LOL

In 2010, I helped set up a sting, with this group called the Tea Party, we kind of messed up the Rinos, didn’t quite get them all, but some of them. Now, with Ryan, I think I am getting some of my dignity back and respect for the Repubs. But Rinos beware, I will not pick the soap up anymore, come on, fool me once, shame on you, fool me 5 times, my butt is sore.

We have got to get this through our thick heads. The Reps are the flip side of the Dems. Same coin. BOTH owned and operated by the Bilderbergers Corporate/Bankers. Politicians around the world work for them NOT FOR the People of the nation.
Report Post »Will ALL of the UNCONSTITUTIONAL EOs of Obama be repealed?? with Romney/Ryan NO.
Will the criminals of the FEDRES be jailed NO. Will the IRS be eliminated NO. Will Obama care be repealed NO. Will they continue illegal dismantling the Middle East(the ME refuses to bow to the Bankers) hence the dismantling WITH the help of the Taliban who worked with and for the C(A all along, who works for? yup…the Bankers. IN FACT THE C9A….was founded by the NWO crowd….to gather intelligence for them…..never had anything to do with US security. EVER. We have been sold a lie since WWII. Here is a fun one when I was a restaurant cook we had this loud mouthed pain in the @ss waiter that always wanted free food well one day he was being a big jerk so I set him up I took a left over Lamb chop spit on it tossed it on the ground and rolled it under my shoe a few times then tossed it at a wall a few times then carefully put it back on the broiler and made it look good.
Short ending he ate it and was happy even said that was the best Lamb chop he ever had!
Never piss off the cook

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 11:28pmMy mom did that when we were kids. We had a one of a kind kiddle bike thing and it came up gone. Two weeks later a neighbor down the street is riding it. Mom marched down there, made the kid get off of it. then brought it home and wrote our last name on the bottom. When the mom over there had the nerve to complain, mom flipped it over and said “Oh, didn’t you see our name when you took it a couple of weeks ago”? Sweet Justice.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 11:57pmMy bike got swiped when I was about ten. My dad saw a kid riding it one day, and brought it back home, to me, in the trunk of his pontiac. I will bet the thief’s life was changed that day, knowing my dad.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 10:38amPeople think stealing a bike is no big deal. It is not as expensive as a car & you are not leaving them without wheels so you are not leaving them destitute. So the thief can assuage their guilty feelings & let their “need” take over. With the money ‘saved’ by obtaining a bike by theft, they can indulge one of the other wants or desires like beer, catching a movie, etc.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 11:33amI don’t think the punishment you alluded to would be appropriate for a bike theft, or any theft for that matter. You sound like a rather disturbed and nasty individual. Maybe you should share some of your violent thoughts with a really good therapist.
