Last year, The Blaze told you about the Wild Goose Festival, a new-found music, arts and celebratory event with a left-of-center focus. The multi-day event, which drew thousands, was a rallying point for America’s Christian left. This year, the event commenced once again — and with some intriguing statements and activities worth noting.
From June 21-24, Pastor Jim Wallis, among other liberal faith leaders, descended upon Shakori Hills, North Carolina, to tout “justice and spirituality,” to talk up Occupy and to engage in praise and worship practices that would make some more conservative Christians uncomfortable, to say the least.

Naturally, the annual event continues to embrace the “social justice” mantra, while seeking to market Christianity in a more favorable light. According to the event’s “about us” page, “many people perceive and experience Christianity to be divisive, prejudiced, sometimes even violent, and often full of guilt.” Instead, those behind the festival want to see the faith be a “life-giving source for the common good.”
This all seems very general of course and the speakers and performers attending the event likely have different views on some more contentious issues like gay marriage and abortion. Still, the leftist streak is evident, particularly when it comes to economic issues (but there’s plenty of social liberalism embedded there as well).
Here’s a video that advertises many of the progressive names who ended up speaking and performing at the event:
Of course, the Occupy movement, which has dominated headlines in both 2011 and 2012, was a focus of conversation at the event. Interestingly, a series of clips featuring Wallis and other leftist leaders has emerged in which each individual offers praise for Occupy’s efforts.
“The Occupy movement has, I think, created space…for a new conversation about inequality and that has been its great contribution,” Wallis said in a clip captured last week at the event. “While it’s not a religious movement, there’s a deep openness that I found. Jesus is actually very popular at Occupy.”
Watch Wallis discuss the so-called movement of the 99 percent, below:
Then there’s Frank Schaeffer, the far-leftist son of theologian Frances Schaefer (he has had plenty of unsavory things to say about the Christian right in the past, as noted previously on The Blaze). In his interview about Occupy, Schaeffer claims that President Barack Obama is sympathetic to the poor, while Republicans are “the party of Wall Street.” He also said that it is a Christian’s duty to explore Occupy’s tenets.
“Occupy Wall Street is a movement that is a duty to participate in, to support, for the reasons that it states of standing up for the 99 percent and asking questions but also to help the Obama administration to do what it what like to do…,” Schaeffer proclaims.
Here are his comments, below:
And Lisa Harper, Sojourners’ director for mobilizing (who yesterday overtly praised the Supreme Court’s health care ruling), also weighed in. Here’s her supportive commentary on the Occupy movement:
Oh and be sure not to miss the “beer and hymns” performance, during which Wild Goose Festival participants apparently drank alcohol en masse, while singing praise and worship songs. Sojourners explains the background:
Here’s an example: Throughout the weekend, Fullsteam, a craft brewery in nearby Durham owned by an alumnus of Wheaton College (yes, that Wheaton) sold selling beer to quench the thirst of Goosers during late night sessions and performances (a la Homebrewed Christianity, etc.). And on Saturday afternoon — call it an early evening happy hour — a group of rag-tag musicians, armed with a few folk instruments, a trumpet and percussion, led a jolly crowd of more than 100 in Sunday School choruses and old-timey spirituals. They called it, “Beer and Hymns.”
There, caught up in a holy wind of hops and hope, we reimagined what church might be during an ad hoc version of “He’s got the Whole World in His Hands.” We the motley worshippers alternated “He’s got the whole world” with “She’s got the whole world,” proudly singing at the top of our lungs, “She’s got the liberals and conservatives / the gays and straights / and a big ole mug of beer/ in her hands.”
Watch it for yourself, below:
In the end, the mission of the Wild Goose Festival seems clear based on those who embrace it. It’s a festival for the Christian left and one that possesses sentiments that the majority of evangelicals (who tend to skew conservative) wouldn’t embrace.

They are really Godless meeting places. Instead of getting closer to God and Christ in their teachings and their acts, they try to get more members by acting more and more like the world in their very sanctuaries. They are lost and sickening. Leftist are not Christians.

For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.””
Unless the Holy Spirit moves in someone, the Gospel is foolishness. People see these loons who make the claim to be Christians, but James was real clear, you can say you’re a christian, but I‘ll show you I’m one by how I act…just like you can say you’re a marathon runner, but if you can‘t get up off the couch I’m not believing it.

Then we learn truly of His great love and patience. We fall flat our face and cry humble tears of joy. May this be a step in that direction for all at the Wild Goose Festival! The Bible is the source of our conservative principles, and marxism is not compatible with Christianity. True Christians are conservative because of their Biblical world view, the only exception is those who are so naive as to be duped into liberal thinking, but since they are deceived, they aren’t walking in the light of God, and whether they are even true Christians, remains to be seen. As for these, they are clearly wolves, and it’s quite apparent by the fruits on the tree, because true Christians don’t delight in evil like Wallace and his ilk.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 11:50am@HI – According to scripture;. Genesis 9:21 says that Noah drank yayin excessively and became drunk. Lot also became drunk on this beverage (Gen. 19:30-36), and so did Nabal (1 Sam. 25:36). Nevertheless, God told his people to enjoy yayin at the yearly festivals (Deut. 14:26). In addition to using wine as a beverage, God also commanded the Levitical priests to include in the sacrifices a portion of wine (yayin) as a drink offering (Ex. 29:40). These scriptures make it clear that there can be a right and a wrong use of wine. Naturally fermented wine is between 10 percent and 14 percent alcohol. Higher alcoholic wines are fortified wines. On such special occasions God even allowed use of what is translated as “strong drink.” This term comes from a different Hebrew word—shekar—which is used 22 times in the Old Testament, and refers to alcoholic drinks made from dates and other fruit. Also in 1 Cor 11:21 Paul warned the Disciples that when they were meeting for the Lords Supper some were getting drunk. Paul told the Corinthians to “put away from among yourselves” a person who cannot control his or her drinking (1 Cor. 5:11-13) There are many Bible verses that warn against drunkeness and being a drunkard and lastly the Jews accused Jesus of being a drunkard. Clearly the wine they were drinking had enough alcohol to make them drunk. Peace in Christ.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 12:10pmThe Jews were a grape growing, wine culture, there was even a carving of a vine on the Temple door. Jesus gave the vine discourse. They made good wine, they knew what they were doing when it came to wine.
Temperance and prohibition clouded late 19th and 20th century American theological views on this. I understand the aversion great thinkers like J. Vernon McGee had to envisioning Jesus creating alcohol, but He did. We are not to be drunken, but the drinking of alcohol is only prohibited in a single OT verse, proverbs I believe, and the actual interpretation is probably warning against drunkenness.
That said, as a Baptist I do not drink. It offends many of my brothers and I feel I am better for not indulging. However, I point no fingers at those who do.

You could have summed that up real quick with 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.”
@ Troll-
Amen! Drinking in and of itself is not a sin. Getting drunk is. And you should not abstain because it ‘offends’ someone else. But if it makes someone else stumble…i.e. they see you drinking one beer at a restaurant and think drinking is ok and go down a 12 pack…that isn’t ok. That’s why I abstain, as to not cause confusion on where I stand or even have to defend myself. I defend myself by not drinking at all, but also don’t jump to conclusions if I see someone else drinking a beer.

I don’t agree with them on HOW we should get there, but I respect this young couple because they live out the very gospel they preach — the husband drives a huge van around giving clothes and clean socks to homeless people and the wife works as a volunteer coordinator at a homeless shelter. They firmly believe in universal health care and hope to run a commune one day… but they walk out their faith more than MOST people I know.
Anyway, I am a conservative Christian woman–went to Restoring Honor… Yet, my pastor is gay… and I go to church with hippies. I‘ve come to realize that God’s kingdom is made of SOOOO many more people than we can even comprehend. He made us all and He LOVES us all. We are never going to find true peace until we can see each other with eyes of grace and love. It has to be more than just a slogan or an ad campaign. I know that, and I also know that God is much bigger than we can comprehend. I’m not saying who is *right* or *wrong*, but I know that Jesus commanded us to LOVE others, especially our enemies. Since HE is my Judge, then I will do my best to carry out the commandment He gave in Luke 10 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.” I would invite those of you genuinely interested in hearing a thoughtful response to these issues to please check out the blog. And, I left the church for many years because it simply didn’t draw me into an authentic relationship with God that I was seeking–I felt that in many ways, “church” required me to put on my happy face and play the dutiful “Christian” role. I LOVE the Bible, and memorize it regularly, but I can’t abide people who say they love everyone, yet are so venomous and ugly in their speech. It is toxic. I don’t really need to defend myself on here, but I do think that it is worth pointing out that Jesus was harder on the religious people (who *knew* their scriptures backwards and forwards) than he was on the sinners–prostitutes, tax collectors, religious terrorists–who were clueless about spiritual matters.
I certainly don‘t agree with everyone’s politics at my church, and this church has CERTAINLY been a challenge for me, as I haven’t always “approved” of homosexuality or progressive rationale. Just a few years ago, I almost walked away from the love of my life because these very same conservative ideals were being challenged. Instead of hiding in my comfort zone, I began to explore and grow. I found a God who is bigger than my comprehension who LOVES us as we are, and that’s a God I can

I encourage you to read the blog… we discuss all of those issues in it. All of our claims are backed up by scripture and supported by the Bible… In fact, I think we actually use the verse you mentioned to support the very thing you condemn… I appreciate your willingness to discuss these very hot topics, and I understand that we may not all agree on everything. I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything — just sharing what I and my husband have come to discover after diligently searching and wrestling with these issues that we were raised never to question. The God I know and love is big enough to not be intimidated by ANYTHING that humanity can cook up… He is the Creator of all things, and as a result, He knows and loves His Creation. If I truly trust Him, then I don’t HAVE to understand or figure out everyone else. I am only responsible for ME–the way I respond to “others” and whether I treat them with love or disdain.
I don’t have any further comment on here as it is obvious that we are on different pages theologically. Be blessed, my brother, and may the God of Creation continue to bring us together to discuss these topics and eventually see each other with a renewed mind and spirit. We are all simply working out our own salvation and, as long as the seeking comes from a spirit of humility and love, I believe we will all find the path of Life. Thank you for giving me audience. Be blessed.

The Karl Marx Crowd trying to envelope his message of “ collective materialism ” within the folds of Christ’s ” individual spirituality.” Think the Great Deceiver is enjoying the show….

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 9:31amThese people are spiritually delusional and blinded by Satanic deception they are not Christians as the Bible defines what a Christian is. Their Jesus is another Jesus as they redefined who Jesus is. Jude 1:4-5 or certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 5 Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. Their judgment is set and future is sure if they do not repent of the evil they embrace.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 9:24amYou know why they have “beers and hymns”? I do. They kicked out the Holy Spirit long ago and devolved into what they have become and theirs (church) was of no Truth, no Life, and no Light, no Salvation….the beers are another spirit..because there is no church here of the Lord Jesus Christ! This is a mockery of Faith in God! These are vipers, vile, crude, reprobates! You have to be vile a long time to be considered reprobates….These represent the left are made up of the left and a very good reason anyone who participates in this religion should NEVER lead any country…This is the antichrist anti God movement. This is NOT the manner of person or persons i would ever want to represent me…they represent the opposite of Faith but standing for what is vile and evil in God’s eyes with their fist in HIS face (and in mine)!

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 9:27amSo far fetched it is barely worth a menial comment. Faith is huge. Left has faith in the gubment only. It is on display daily, denomination doesn’t matter, selves and gubmint only Why learn to fish when uncle will provide the fish at someone else’s expense for the betterment of the collective and all that happy crap. How will the rainbow cair coalition rub elbows with the lefty evangilists? How does black lib theology spoon with the far left hebrews after hours when shariah is in effect? So many questions for that big rainbow tent. Whatever floats your boat though.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 9:26amTheology is one thing, but when it is put into practice and called a true religion, well then thats something else isn’t it. The right would like to claim ownership of the religion, but many would argue that the left worships a more liberal and social Jesus than the one the conservative worship.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 9:40amMAC: ” a social Jesus ?” Hmmmm. Interesting concept. While he personally fed the masses with those loaves and fishes ( note: didn’t call on the government ! ), I don’t think “social events” were His main concern. Have a sneaking suspicion that His message to ” render unto Caesar that which was Caesar‘s and to render unto God that which was God’s , ” did not entail beer and partying. Do think Jesus had a more spiritual focus which these materialists seem to have missed .

God is only as powerful as the number that believe in Him? Wow! That sounds like something that would be preached at this liberal loony-fest.
I am not in the least concerned with any perceived wedges being driven anywhere. Being a Christian means having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. No more…no less.

Posted on June 29, 2012 at 9:07amThe very actions of these self proclaimed Christians declares their true allegiance in this world and in the next. Social Justice and Marxism are contra to the Bible itself; and thus in turning the state into a god of this world and the next, they betray the true and only Living God Himself.
May they come and see the truth while time remains, or they need to be prepared to reap the harvest of blood coming their way from Obama.
