Catholic Campaign Video About Abortion, Gay Marriage & Contraception That Is Going Viral

Catholics Called to Witness, a conservative, Florida-based Catholic organization, has produced an epic ad about values issues in the 2012 presidential campaign. Just weeks after it was first posted, the three-minute clip is gaining steam across the blogosphere. The Huffington Post has more about the hard-hitting political clip:

“Test of Fire,“ which shows of an iron worker casting pieces that say ”jobs,“ ”taxes,“ and ”energy” with daunting music in the background, tells viewers that some politicians’ policies are negotiable but that those which would legalize same-sex marriage or support the inclusion of contraception coverage in religious institutions’ insurance plans are dealbreakers.

“In generations past, the church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. This generation of Catholics must do the same,” says the video, which also shows a presumably Catholic woman voting.

The eerily invigorating music that plays throughout the clip accompanies moving imagery and gripping text.

“This November, Catholics across the nation will be put to the test. Many issues in America require hard work,” the text proclaims. ”But how do we know if we are building in vein?”

The video goes on to say that Catholics have an opportunity to shape America’s future for the current generation and for “generations to come.” Additionally, the video conceded that many issues are currently problematic, but that some are non-negotiable. These issues are, as stated: abortion, the redefinition of marriage and the contraceptive mandate.

“Your vote will affect the future and be recorded in eternity,” the text concludes. “Will you vote the values…that will stand the test of fire?”

      @Philly

They are very careful not to specifically endorse a candidate by name. Their tax exempt status is in no danger. In the same way, the Church can decry policies it sees as contrary to their teachers, but as long as they stop short of “Don’t vote for Obama“ or ”vote for Romney,” they won’t get in trouble.

And I seem to recall reading that when an overzealous preacher does mention such things once in a while, the result is usually fines, not immediate revocation of tax exempt status.

This video is fine with the tax exempt status. I work for the IRS. If Media Matters can have a tax expemt status and state in its incorpration papers that it is against Conservative (that’s a political stand) and it is against Christian values and get a tax exemption and it did then this video is NOTHING, more than telling Catholics to vote their Catholic beliefs in November. No party or persons name was used so Phillyatheists you are off the mark. But you are off the mark more than this it must be very sad to have no beliefs in anything SAD IN DEED

While the video is very well done, the fact of the matter is that it’s an entire waste of time and effort.
The Catholic Church in America sold it’s soul out to devil long ago. It sold out to the Communists in the late 50s & early 60s in America. The Church and an overwhelming portion of it’s members have become nothing more than another shill for the Democratic Party. The Churches teachings are laughed at by most members, who continue to support politicians like the Kennedys, Pelosi & Biden, even though those politicians support infanticide. The Church itself, along with much of it’s high ranking clergy show not admonishment to these politicians, but genuine support and even friendship.
While clergy like Dolan my want to try to clean up this matter, there are too few of like minded clergy to do it. Excommunication for those that defy Church teachings? Of course not; when those politicians wield money and power. In that regard the Catholic Church isn’t much different than it was before the Reformation.

      @Ted… man are you clueless…
go back over the last 20-30 years and you will see that the Catholic Church in America MIRRORS average America. there are a wide variety of personal political beliefs, including on gay marriage and abortion, within the Church and even within the leadership nationally.
Catholics, going back many decades, with the exception of Kennedy and Reagan, have been voting about the same, 54% – 46% Democrat – Republican.
the Catholic Church has been against contraception forever but you don’t see Bishops and Priests excommunicating parishioners that use them, or that are gay, or that get abortions. The Church has laid down their doctrine, their teaching…certain issues they leave between you and God and state that God will deliver ultimate judgement.
As for politicians, certain Bishops have done much to push back, doing everything they can do without consent of the Papacy, like denying Communion and Marriage ceremonies. Excommunication requires Papal Decree.

Now if logical thought says that Catholics are split nearly 50-50 on politics, than you would think that Catholic Parishes are also split 50-50 on politics/policy and their interpretation of Papal Decree. So a politician, liberal or conservative, will probably align and attend services with a liberal or conservative Pastor and Parish..

seems to work that way with ALL denominations and faiths…wow..imagine that…who would have thought….

Most American Catholics are much like American Jews in that their religion is really just something they call themselves. Most are so moronic, they feel they can belong to a religion, yet support the causes the Church is opposed to. Why would one be Catholic & a Democrat? You’re either a baby killer, or you’re not.

A pretty good video overall, well worth the 2 1/2 minutes to watch it. Only two issues came to mind while watching it:

    1. When it said the election will define “our generation” and “generations to come,” the only people shown were white, middle-aged people. I feel like it would have had more of an impact if, say the woman who was voting was a young, college-age woman instead of the dour housewife-looking middle-aged woman. Or maybe if they had reinforced the message of life, marriage, etc with examples (the woman has a baby, the old man is working with his wife or family at the forge).

    2. The hammer didn’t remind of America, so much as half the classic symbols of the USSR: hammer and sickle. It’s not a bad profession to take and went with the point of the video (test of fire) very well, but I found myself thinking “Hmmm, couldn’t we find something more American than a hammer?” Then again, nothing jumps out at me immediately. Somehow I feel “Bald Eagle trainer” isn‘t quite as evocative even if it’s more patriotic.

    Still, a good video!

If a Christian denomination believes that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, only way to salvation, died and rose from the dead for the remission of sins, I can stand with those in unity of the flock. I will leave the other docrinal differences to be sorted out when we get to heaven. Though I doubt, in His presence, such things will cross my mind….

The Catholic Church denounced what happen in the past, and boy oh boy, we sure are seeing the Catholics burning the apostates at the stake today! Are you kidding me? Oh grow up. That was the past. No one can undo what was done in a bygone era. We just have to make sure not to let it happen again in our current era. Oh, and no one from this time period should apologize for what happened since we (the Catholic Church) would not conduct ourself nor condone such atrocities today. It’s called evolving. We’ve grown past it. Perhaps you can too.

Should the Church of today be held responsible for what the Church did 400 yrs. ago? Do you know what your 12th great grandfather did? Was he a witch hunter? Maybe he was Roman and nailed people up to bake in the sun. Maybe he was Aztec and killed little kids in the mountains.

The truth of God has been perverted by the ego’s of men since the beginning of time. But their is one basic truth that must be held sacred. God wants you to love him of your own free will. Forced belief does not come from free will. The Church of today recognizes that truth.

That is why it is so important to ensure that the first clause of 1st amendment, “Congress shall make no law respecting (regarding) religion” is upheld. Our heartfelt beliefs must be protected. Taking away our right to peaceably exercise our free will, not only dictates to the citizens what they are not allowed to think and believe; but also takes away our ability to love God of our own free will.

I assume you mean the Inquisitions. Yes plural there were 3 of note and your estimate of those killed is way off. The Inquisitons (specifitly Spanish) was intended not to convert people, but to find people who were outwardly claiming to be Christian but secretly practiced another religion, such as people who had become Christian outwardly, but who were still secretly practicing anti-Messianic Judaism, Islam, or Albigensianism, this last being a religion claiming that there are two gods, one good and one evil. It was thus an attempt to protect the purity of the Christian community.

Also, I’d like to point out that the Protestants had a counter-inquisition that killed Catholics. Thousands of Catholics were killed in England alone after the Reformation struck there. The same thing was true in Ireland and other areas where the Reformation came. John Calvin, for instance, was known for burning people at the stake. Can you name one country that has not killed Catholics? No, because there isn’t one.
In addition, Protestants were the big witch-burners. Witch burning never caught on in Catholic countries. When the Spanish Inquisition examined the cases of reported witches, it almost invariably concluded that the charges were false and the accused were not guilty. But tens of thousands of supposed witches were burned at the stake, hanged, or drowned in Protestant countries, including the American colonies.

“This November, Catholics across the nation will be put to the test. Many issues in America require hard work,” the text proclaims. ”But how do we know if we are building in vein?”

It‘s usually pretty obvious when we’re building in vein. There are arteries, and blood flow, and if you eat too much junk food, cholesterol might build up in the veins. Now, building in vain would be bad. But in vein? Go for it.

We are starting to see the moral deterioration in our society, since Progressives have removed faith (and therefore values) from the schools, public square, and even the military. I’m not a Catholic, but I stand with them because freedom of religion means that the government does not dictate to or force churches to act in ways that counter their values/beliefs. In fact, I have attended a rally together with other faiths to remind Obama that we stand together on this. Whether one believes in abortion or gay marriage or not, government must keep its hands off of the church. That’s something we all can and should agree on.

It is time, STAND UP, dont be silent and let these 60′s radicals destroy this nation that we love, STAND UP, and fight for Freedom, Liberty, and Truth. STAND UP, and know that God and the Truth are on our side. STAND UP, and scream it loud from the roof tops that this nation was founded with Devine Providence from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and no matter how hard they try they will NOT erase this from history. STAND UP, and send this evil life style back to satan were it belongs. STAND UP, and tell everyone you know that this nation IS the greatest nation in history because of our relationship with our GOD. STAND UP, and tell them all you will NEVER TAKE AWAY MY RIGHT TO SELF DEFENSE……WAKE UP AND STAND UP….FORE THE WOLVES ARE AT OUR DOOR, IT IS TIME….

I think that good old GW said it best re. the nation’s foundation. Y’all are grasping at straws with the religion card. Keep religion out of our lives if we don’t want it. If you want to practice some sort of belief on an ancient, frequently re-translated book, that’s your business. Just don’t force it on the rest of us. Thank you.

“The United States is in no sense founded upon the Christian doctrine.”
      –George Washington

“The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever
from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with
      blood for centuries.¬”
      –James Madison

“Religions are all alike – founded upon fables and mythologie¬s.”
      - Thomas Jefferson

“The Christian God is a being of terrific character — cruel, vindictive¬,
      capricious¬, and unjust.”
      – Thomas Jefferson

“In no instance have . . . the churches been guardians of the liberties of the people.”
      - James Madison

I just did a Google search on Mr. David Barton. I discovered that he’s a “Christian Evangelical” on a mission to disprove the separation of church and state…interesting. I further looked up reviews by others on his work and he is quite discredited, accused of sloppy work and taking quotes from the Founding Fathers and the bible out of context. In other words, he’s a Evangelical Christian hack from Texas…big surprise. I’ll take a pass on wasting time reading anything he has written.

      James Madison
      Belief – Episcopalian

“Religion is the basis and Foundation of Government.” June 20, 1785

“It is not the talking but the walking and working person that is the true Christian.” In a manuscript on the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, Madison makes this statement.

“We have all been encouraged to feel in the guardianship and guidance of that Almighty Being, whose power regulates the destiny of nations.” March 4, 1809 Inaugural Address

“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We’ve staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity…to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” [1778 to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia]

Winedude… It is real easy to find on the internet that George Washington said such phrase. But I have yet to find any empirical evidence of that. The phrase actually stems from the Treaty of Tripoli sign in 1797. The Treaty was initiated by Washington, but it was written in arabic. The phrase comes from an Article that was added in the translation to English and then ratified. This didn’t happen until after John Adams was President. Throughout history, the original text has been translated many times. It is agreed that Article 11 (the article in question) does not appear. The section from where it was taken was written in a letter form but there is no correlation between these parts in the English and Arabic versions. And even so, John Adams and the others ratified it on the premise that no official religion would be recognized so all were welcome. This was done in the same way that the “myth” of separation of church and state was presented by Thomas Jefferson. It was never intended to deny the founding principles. It was intended to establish freedom for any person regardless or race or religion to be apart of this new country. The entire ideology expressed was that all should feel free to worship as they choose (including Christians, which would be a shocker for most liberals to find out).

Catholic Church: prepare for the Far Left blow back. ( see what the Left is doing to political conservatives, to the military, to the Tea Party, to church goers, to tax payers, to capitalists , to those who stand for the rights of the individual, to those who don’t like bullies, to those who follow traditional values ? ) . Will be interesting to see how these two forces of good and evil will weather this battle. I know which side I am on.
