The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a hearing to investigate allegations of “forced unionism” and different ways in which unions use collected dues to contribute to political campaigns.
In order to emphasize what many believe to be a serious and growing problem, the committee will release the personal stories of three union members who claim they have been denied a choice in joining a union.
The first video features Terry Bowman, a Ford assembly-line worker who spoke out before the House Oversight Committee about union leaders taking his dues in order to fund partisan politics that directly contradict his personal beliefs:
The second video features Claire Waites, a teacher from Daphne, AL., who joined the local teachers union to obtain liability insurance.
However, in order to obtain coverage, she was forced to remain a union member. Waites reported at a recent Oversight hearing that her union pressured her to contribute to a “children’s fund” that was actually a slush fund used to finance special interest groups and union agendas.
The third video features Sally Coomer of Duvall, WA., who is a homecare worker of her disabled adult daughter. Under the current law, she is forced to become a member of the SEIU, according to the Oversight committee.
“As a member, $95 a month is taken for union dues, which go to fund causes she does not support. That $95 could provide an additional 9 to 10 hours of care for her daughter,” the committee reports.
“I wrote about this last November, when both Michigan and Minnesota tried to extend this forced-unionism into day-care operations as well as home-care situations,” writes Ed Morrissey of Hot Air.
“There is no reason to force parents who receive Medicaid to care for developmentally-disabled children into unions, except to pick their pockets for the benefit of union bosses and political parties. It’s positively ghoulish, as I wrote at the time, and only the efforts of Republican-controlled legislatures in both states kept them from forcing babysitters into unions,” he adds.
As the problem continues to grow (or, rather, as things slowly come to light), the Oversight Committee pledges more investigations into forced unionism:
On February 8th, the Committee published a report finding that the Obama Administration and recent court cases have directly contributed to the loss of workplace freedom as well as worker rights violations endured by Ms. Coomer, Mr. Bowman and Ms. Waites.
As the federal government aids and abets these violations, union leaders spent more than $1.1 billion on partisan politics during the 2010 election cycle. The Committee will continue to investigate the growing lack of accountability and transparency in how union leaders take dues money from rank-and-file members and spend that money on political causes many of their own members oppose.

Then I got laid off again, so I found another job. Another union job. I lost that job when the company went bankrupt six weeks later. Then I got a non union job and I’ve been working for the same company for 29 years, no lay offs, no strikes, just good steady work. Unions suck.

I worked for the United Auto Workers union and was lucky that the state i was in was a right to work state because it afforded me all the benefits of the contract without the union dues. Even though i was not a member of the union, that didn’t stop them from trying to force me to pay dues, and they had forced many other nonunion members to pay dues. This all came to a head when i made a big stink about it and pointed out to the company that the union didn’t have the authority to take dues from nonunion members in a right to work state. Needless to say i didn‘t make any friends with the local union business agent when i informed the company that per the law they didn’t have the right to take dues from me and i had the company stop sending MY MONEY to the unions bank account. Along with me the company also stopped taking dues money from all the other nonunion members, that brought out a big reaction from the union. They went on to try and use scare tactics on the nonunion members telling them that if the didn’t pay dues that they would not get all the benefits from the contract to try and fool them into telling the company to start up their dues again. I made it a point to set the story stright and told the other nonunion members that what the union was telling them was a lie, they were entitled to the full benefits if they were a union member or n

I can’t have the dues totally stopped as I would like, but I did put the breaks on the portion that is going directly to political activities (Democrats!). I objected under Beck’s Law (nothing to do with Glenn) and now I pay less in dues. They were apply 27% of my dues to help strip my freedom away. It’s my little way of trying to DEFUND the Union. I am not funding my own demise and the demise of this country! No way.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 3:50pmMy only introduction to Unions was when my brother-in-law (mechanic) got hired by a local small company (100 workers). They actually asked him if he wanted to join (not forced)… and he decided to join because of a friend there. He’s a dedicated worker and immediately after working for a week… the other union/co-workers started telling him to relax… he didn’t have to work that fast. But, he continued to work like that. The bosses noticed his hard work and wanted to promote him… but, they couldn’t because the unions had rules about seniority. Hard work does not pay off in unions.
I’m just guessing, but I think that unions may have started off with good intentions giving workers rights…. but, now has progressed to unions strong-arming the company with high salaries and low poor production.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 8:04pmI was UAW in a shop for all of a year and man was it awful. Never have I seen such lazy entitled people get to keep their jobs! If they were my employees, I’d have fired the lot of them, but the union, of course, protected their jobs. I busted ass, while they took extended breaks and stopped the line altogether if they hit quota for the hour “wouldn’t want them to expect more” they’d say with a laugh while standing around for upwards of 20 minutes. I go to work to WORK, and then go home, I can stand around at home if I want. I took my breaks exactly for the 10 minutes ordered, and ran the line alone while they had their thumbs up their butts. Needless to say, they didn’t appreciate this and did their best to make work so miserable, being generally mean and constantly complaining to the supervisor, that I quit in exasperation as soon as I could get a new non-union job. Now I bust ass as much as I want, get paid better, and have better bennys! It feels good to work hard and go home tired feeling like you got something done…dunno what these union jerks problem is.

Report Post »I got a song & dance but kept my cool telling them I had no idea what the union could do for me that I couldn’t do for myself. They did that a couple of times and I balked each time.
Finally, I transferred to a non union job. But I remembered reading how mean and hateful the unions were, and how they burned down buildings of non union jobs and reading that article in the Readers
Digest ticked me off so much, I swore I’d never belong to anything like a union with their communist tactics. Over the years the Unions have gotten worse & worse and I still feel disgusted with them.
I‘d wash dishes before I’d belong to a Union. Bad teachers keep their jobs because of unions, and I think it’s time to hire good teachers that are non union. Look what unions have done for our children.

Posted on February 14, 2012 at 3:43pmAs a former union rep I saw what went on behind closed doors. It was mainly politics and telling people who to vote for and getting signs out in yards. Heck with the people who need the union to help them in their job – too busy kissing up to the politicians. When I left the union I hated it so much I didn’t want to pay dues. Well we HAD to – you of course had the options to pay full price and be a union member or pay full price and not be a union member. Where I worked the employer was not very trustworthy person so I had to belong. Too bad we don’t have good people running things and we then could get rid of the unions. It is a two sided sword out there but I feel the unions aren’t there for us but for themselves.

I work for a nationwide company, we have 72 divisions in all states and areas of the country. All but 15 are NON UNION. I work in a non union division in a right to work state and our pay and benifits are better than the same jobs in the union divisions.
WHY??? Because the non union workers are more productive. The divisions make more money and pay the employees better. WHY, because they don’t want to deal with the unions so they pay non union employees better and the non union employees produce more. Ever Heard Of Win/Win.
The age of low pay, dangerous working conditions and frankly the need for unions is long gone. Unions job is done, has been done for decades.
In today’s market companies are competing for talent, looking for good workers. The days of abusing workers are gone, welll except union workers being abused by unions.
Wake up and smell the coffee or take another drink of Kook Aid, doesn’t matter to me.

Companies realize that in order to keep the best (most productive (not union here) workers they have to offer competitive salaries and decent benefits. Unions rob employers and employees and the reduce production, quality, and profitability. If you can’t see that then well, like the rest of the pro-union morons, you are an idiot. If we ever hope to get this country back, UNIONS must go, all income levels, from $1.00 a year to 1 billion a year need to pay the same percentage of income tax, say 10%. That way ALL CONTRIBUTE FAIRLY. But people like you don’t get fairness do you? And yes, the wealthy pay the MAJORITY OF ALL INCOME TAX PAID IN THE US. So yea, they need a break and the rest of us need to pay our fair share, hence 10% for all no matter the income level and NO FREAKING DEDUCTIONS OR LOOPHOLES. They aren‘t needed now for that so don’t even bring that up.
And there certainly should not be forced membership. My parents were teachers and HAD to join. Had to. And my friend in state gov‘t didn’t actually have to join, but she did have to pay the same fee as if she had joined. So she basically still had to pay for something she did not want. This is so wrong.

And employer damn sure should be able to make a profit and grow a business that can hire more workers he77 no all profits should be divided equally based on time served in the company again reguardless of the quality of work.

As evidenced by the testimony of the individuals in the videos the unions are lying to their members to support liberal and extreme liberal causes. These fine folks do not want to be manipulated or coerced by the unions they belong to support causes they deem detrimental to their respective lifestyles, opinions or to the nation.
Unions are much of the problem in politics today so much so that most Dems are influenced in one way or another by some union. If we conservatives are not careful and fail to take a stand against such activities the unions and illegal voters will put Obama back in office. That‘s the plan and you can bet it’s going to happen if we don’t do something about it.
For starters — get involved in local, state and national politics. Make your voice heard. Stand with others to fight the tyranny which exists today in this nation.
By all means let’s get rid of BHO and his minions via the ballot box in November. he has got to go!

My wife did right after we got married 35 years ago and I was paying biolls and came across this bill for $129.00 and I found out it was for just a quarter. They took 95 dollars a month out of my check! Now multiply that by 500,000 (or whatever the # is now)!! I could not do it in good conscience….I REFUSE to feed the beast! This has been going on for some time but I see now they are passing new laws to creep into our homes and every aspect of our lives! Lord help us! They wanted me to see it their way but their way was wrong and I stuck to my guns. There was strong rumors that I was going to get beat up for not falling in line. I am a pretty good sized man…(not fat) and I took Karate for years. I am not saying that I could not get my azz whipped but I can guarrantee it would not be easy. I went straight to the president of that group and told him if anything happened to me or my family and I lived, I would go to his house and kill him and his whole effing family. After that…things got a lot better. I did not let my guard down but I did win my argument. I left that place later…;with no union problems.
