Updated: See What Happens When This Singer Can‘t Quite Reach the Final Notes of ’God Bless America’

During a 4th of July baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers, the man picked to sing “God Bless America” (who appears to be an Air Force member) has what we’re going to call a “technical malfunction”: his voice cracks during the song’s big conclusion.
And it cracks bad:
Now, let’s cut the guy some slack. He actually has a good singing voice and just, well, his vocal cords simply give out on him. It’s not like he forgot the lyrics to one of our nation’s great songs, or purposely botched it, or tried to put his own “artsy” spin on it. His voice simply messes up at the very end (we can forgive him for that, right?).
Kind of makes you want to give the guy a hug.
Oh, and while we’re pointing out some small mistakes, we thought we should also note that whoever controls CBSNewsOnline YouTube account is unaware that “God Bless America” is not, in fact, our nation’s anthem:
UPDATE — Like we mentioned earlier, we only needed to hear some of his rendition of “God Bless America” to know that he had a good singing voice. Now it’s time for what some call “web redemption”:
Boom. There you go.
As you can see, before his voice gave out during the final notes of “God Bless America,” he absolutely nailed the “National Anthem.” And for what it’s worth, we think his version of our nation’s anthem is a lot better than some of the stuff we’ve heard from our glitzy pop stars.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 7:44pmHe did a great job of the song and has a very lovely voice.. He needs to take that note down the next time. It could have happened to anyone.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 5:10pmWho cares if his voiced cracked. Like so many others who sing God Bless America and worse yet, the Naitonal Anthym, the tempo was too slow. I can live with God Bless America being sung too slow but do it with the National Anthym and you are showing abject disrespect.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 4:36pmHe did a GREAT job of singing “God Bless America” and his voice cracked at the end. Okay, these things happen, from time-to-time. It’s not like he had a “uniform malfunction.” Now, play ball!!

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 4:29pmIt doesn’t matter HOW you sing God Bless America….as long as we keep singing it proudly.

Posted on July 7, 2012 at 2:28pmYes, I hope this doesn’t discourage him. He has a beautiful voice and the world needs to hear it. Could have happened to anyone. I would tell him he just needs to climb back in the saddle and sing his heart out……..MSSMUG

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 4:22pmCan we rewrite some of these patriotic songs to have less range? I have seen too many people screw up the national anthem and this song. In the case of the Star Spangled Banner, remember that the tune is based on an old English drinking song. That means that the SSB was set to a tune that is presumable supposed to be sung while you are completely dog-buggered. I’m not an expert on booze, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that it helps you reach those high notes.

Posted on July 7, 2012 at 6:25pmNo rewriting of these fine songs is needed. And Booze makes it worse, not better. The singer could have dropped the last note by one octave and thats it. The note was beyond his range, and thats not the songs fault. Some songs call for a special voice. Whitney Houston did one of the best versions of the Star Spangled Banner ever, because she could handle the range of the song.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 3:44pmApparently seabass82 didn’t read the whole article, or the post of others saying; God Bless America ISN’T our national anthem. By the way justjason, the Airman was singing it in the seventh inning stretch where it is usually sung, not opening the game with it. So he’s not trying to change the anthem.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 3:18pmI feel bad for him, but it was kind of funny. It‘s not like he can’t sing at all, he just missed the note. When you have someone like Roseann Barr making a mockery of these songs, then she deserves ridicule.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 2:14pmThis poor man must have felt mortified, and to make it even worse you people that publisize it all over the world, have forgotten your decency and made it a million times more embarrassing for him. What the hell is wrong with you?!!! REAL people have a heart, AND a concience, obviously this is not the case here.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 2:10pmNo big deal…that’s what happens sometimes with a live performance. People these days are too used to “perfection”. Perfection is boring. Live is rarely “perfect’.
He really didn’t have to go for that last high note either. Prolly didn’t start out in the right key…it sounded a mite high…totally the responsibility of the accompanist. They should have gotten their heads together beforehand.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 2:04pmNerves and emotion can really affect control of your singing voice. We had a personal friend and gifted singer perform at our wedding, but she was so emotional that she couldn’t sing a solo she had performed dozens of times before. It happens – he’ll get over it.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 1:54pmThe is an effort to replace National Anthem with various other songs, God Bless America being one of them. It is the centered on the Left’s objection to Rockets red glare bombs bursting in air…
I don’t for the life of me know why people permit this change. A person in uniform no less.

Posted on July 7, 2012 at 6:11pmHe sang the National Anthem before the game, and did God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch. That’s how it works. So get your facts straight before you sound stupid. This is his son by the way.

Does anyone remember when Carl Lewis did the “Star-Spangled Banner?” IMHO, it is way funnier than this airman. Let me see if it’s on YouTube….

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 1:43pmHe sounds like a low tenor / high baritone. He’s doing the piece in A or Bb. There is no reason that he had to go for the high tonic. He was hot-dogging, and he beclowned himself, just like the people who hotdog the National Anthem by taking a high tonic at “land of the free-EEE”. Sorry, I don’t feel for him.

Posted on July 7, 2012 at 3:33amAs you don’t know the facts… He was not clowning and has hit it many times before. As I said in my initial post… No one shows how well he sang the National Anthem or how well this song was going until that note… No one knows he got back from a deployment with a respiratory infection and has been sick for weeks. No one knows he did this 2 years ago at the same game on the 4th and all was perfect. No one shows the Whole song just the end. So your comment is based on ignorance…

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 1:38pmAs the blaze points out……this is not the national anthem like it was reported. He would have really had a problem with the last words of our real anthem.
Report Post »Akaufmann16
Posted on July 7, 2012 at 6:14pmHmm, No problem with the words to the National Anthem. Why don’t you watch the video of the anthem. No issues at all. And his voice cracked because he has a severe upper respiratory infection, which he got last week from deploying to Latvia.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 1:32pmIt takes a lot of guts and patriotism to sing the national anthem in front of a large crowd.
Report Post »Kudos to this American.
Ever watch shows like American Idol where the young culturally deprived and severely uneducated ‘wanna-be‘s’ actually forget the lyrics and then throw tantrums?
Now that’is shameful!
