SEIU Affiliate Accused of Punishing Dissenting Employees

Two employees who voiced support for a rival union were wrongfully dismissed during contract negotiations with a Service Employees International Union (SEIU) affiliate, according to a complaint issued by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
According to the complaint, the SEIU-affiliated Rochester Regional Joint Board of Workers United carried out unfair labor practices by “negotiating to insert new language in a labor contract that reduced the pay and work opportunities of the employees,” The Examiner reports. Both dismissed individuals were employees of Sodexo who worked in cafeteria and catering jobs in New York.
After an investigation, NLRB found there was enough evidence to support the employees’ allegations that Workers United engaged in illegal conduct against them in retaliation for their support of a rival union, Local 471-UNITE HERE. The NLRB complaint specifically alleges that during negotiations for a new contract in May 2010, Workers United, an SEIU affiliate, demanded new contract language that reduced the vacation pay of Rodrigue.
The SEIU affiliate reportedly also demanded that catering assignments be based on seniority, reducing the work opportunities and pay of one of the anti-union employees.
The NLRB alleges that the SEIU affiliate engaged in this illegal conduct to retaliate against [the two employees], who supported Local 471-UNITE HERE, and also “to discourage other employees from supporting” Local 471-UNITE HERE.
By this conduct, the union “has been restraining and coercing employees in the exercising of rights guaranteed” under federal labor laws, according to the complaint. As part of the remedy for the alleged unfair labor practices, the NLRB is seeking to have Workers United pay lost wages, with interest, to the affected workers.
The SEIU-affiliated union — not the Sodexo company — must answer to the complaint by Wednesday and an NLRB Administrative Law Judge will rule in a hearing on the complaint in January.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 5:59amIf the union workers themselves wake up and see that they are being played by these unions as they spend billions of their dollars on elections and will soon be looking for a bail out for their pensions, it’s legalized organized crime.

Report Post »A major effort needs to be undertaken to remove union influence in politics and power them down in the workplace. I mean a HUGE effort throughout the country.
Trumpka is a loud mouthed, leg breaker style tyrant with designs to increase the size and scope of the unions, as well as enriching himself. It goes without saying that, he needs to be stopped cold in his tracks as soon as possible, along with every other union leader of his ilk. I don’t want him to see a Hoffa type of and end but rather shrunk down to size and shamed nationally.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 12:37amI worked a union job for a few months while I lived on Long Island. It was terrible what the union did. I actually went off on the employee rep who came by. He tried to dictate to me that his efforts were for the good of all employees. The issue was over health care I was suppose to get this great package but the Union had decided that they would change the rules, therefore I had to wait another six months. I wasn’t allow to work full-time and there was another issue, but I forget. I think it might have been them protecting terrible workers form being fired. The rep was a union guy, had no concern for the workers but made sure that our dues were taken out of our paychecks. Oh, I do not respect nor like unions. They have become a plague in this country and on the american worker.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 12:23amAre you surprised? Union bosses are only interested in getting more power and will not be able to keep up with their spending. Does it remind you of something? Maybe the way our government is spending our money. Beware, they won’t be able to protect your dues by lobbying in the global environment, telling people: “Workers of the world, unite!” – while they keep on spending your money and endangering your pensions. Workers of the United States: stand up for your rights!

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 3:02am100% correct–why do you think that the first thing they as for is wage increases? All their money is tied to a percentage of the worker’s pay–they’re making bundles while assuming no risk.

When you call people dumb you should first appear smarter than average. Ya, all those union workers stop paying dues and the companies will let them go for cheaper labor. How do you think businesses like Temp Agency’s exist? Companies do not have to pay insurance for those workers or provide benefits and the only thing keeping most middle class laborers employed is the Unions.

Report Post »On the temp agencies, some of them have benefit programs you can participate in, they don’t pay the premiums for you but they do have them–and the cost is less than individual insurance.
I feel sorry for the workers who are so dependent on the unions…..if I were a member, they would scare me to death. They are spending SO MUCH money on these elections..money is so tight that contract negotiations are going to be more difficult…and the workers pensions are only between 50 and 60% funded in some cases. The union members should really FORCE them to get the funding on the pensions up–someday it is all going to catch up with the union bosses…but the members will probably lose.

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 12:04amAll I’m going to say is you should do a little more research and also look at the positives from Unions. Walmart – max pay is $12.50 hr period no Union. What makes you think GM or any other big manufacturing company wouldn’t have gone the Walmart pay route without the formation of the workers union? Do you have any idea what it was like to work at Ford back in the day? A little research here and imagine your boss doing those things. I’m just a little offended by calling Union members uneducated. I’m not trying to support what has become of Unions today but before you call people uneducated, stop and think about it.

Posted on November 8, 2010 at 11:32pmUnions are going backwards. I have first-hand knowledge of how things were run on the Union run Docks in N.Y. and New Jersey back in the day of a young Frank Sinatra. If a Union member was out of line, and out-of-line could mean any supposed infraction, the Dock Workers Union would get another Union person to have a man-to-man talk with the ‘confused’ one. If that didn’t work…. they beat him to within an inch of his life. Back then they called it “Union Enforcement”. It worked well. The Union kept their grip on power and the ‘enforcer’ always got a nice bonus in his pay that week.
The way things are going, we will have rolled back to those days well before Obama leaves office. “Workers of the World Unite” to help the Marxists rule the world!

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 8:29amI thought that the only people SoDexHo hired were mentally handicapped. How do they even need a union when they make barely over minumun wage? It reminds me of when I started working at a grocery store. After a few months the union rep would come through and MAKE you join or you would lose your job. My first paycheck after that I saw that the union took $20 in dues from my check. I was only getting minimum wage at part time and the entire check was normally about $80! They took 25% of my pay for representing me and I made minimum wage! I’m not proud of what happened next, but suffice it to say that I took every break I could get and drinks and food were on the house. I know now that it was wrong, but when you become so demoralized when some jackwagon is stealing 25% of your paycheck and it is legal!
