SEIU President Arrested at Occupy Wall Street‘s ’Day of Action’ Protest

The Occupiers, despite small crowds at moments, are claiming that Thursday’s “Day of Action” protest was a major success. While protesters failed to shut down the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the New York City transit system, they were successful at blocking traffic and changing the city’s dynamics, as they converged in New York’s busy streets.

Throughout the day, there were more than 200 arrests, complete with sometimes violent clashes between police and Occupiers. As a result, five protesters were charged with felony assault and seven officers and 10 protesters sustained injuries.

Among those notable individuals taken into custody was Mary Kay Henry, the president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Also arrested was city councilman Jumaane D. Williams and George Fresham, president of 1199/S.E.I.U., United Healthcare Workers East. Henry and company were blocking a roadway that leads to the Brooklyn Bridge when authorities detained them.

Below, watch video of the SEIU national president being taken into custody, as she chants along with protesters, “We are the 99 percent!” According to police, Henry, Williams and Fresham will post likely be charged with disorderly conduct:

Earlier this week, Henry made the SEIU‘s endorsement of President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign official. Salon has more:

Just weeks after issuing a union-wide endorsement of Occupy Wall Street, the 2.1-million-member Service Employees International Union announced this morning it is also endorsing President Obama for reelection.

In an interview with Salon following a conference call announcing the endorsement, SEIU president Mary Kay Henry stressed the union will not try to enlist occupiers as ground troops for Obama’s reelection — but SEIU also plans to stay involved with the Occupy movement into 2012. SEIU, then under the leadership of Andy Stern, spent millions of dollars helping to elect Obama in 2008.

Henry appeared on MSNBC earlier on Thursday to discuss her union’s 2012 electoral plans. In her interview, she says, “The Republican field has made us very concerned that we need to step out now” to prevent what she believes is a dangerous, GOP agenda.

And she goes on to call the Occupy movement, “an inspiring movement for change”:

Considering her deep involvement in the movement, it‘s hard to imagine that she and the SEIU won’t encourage members to join in.

Watching ed shultz last night, interview with a guy who is leading occupy wall street named Jonathan Smucker. He is identified as a small business owner from Providence Rhode Island. Ed repeats the small businees owner thing several times and stresses it. Now I am in Providence at least once a week. I have been searching for the small business of Jonathan Smucker and can’t find it in building, phone book or web. I have googled Jonathan Smucker wwho has been interviewed by all the usual suspects and is described the same way, a 33year old small business owner from Providence Rhode island. In the dozens of national media interviews is the name of his small business mentioned. I find it hard to believe that any business owner with national exposure would not mention the name of their small business.

This is part of the real beginning what what to happen when a unon leader that control a group of employees that run a city. Out here in San Diego SEIU runs everything.

Obama is using the unions is gang up on on people. If your not union and you vote against the democrat your going to be screwed. The extremists on the left already like to “OUT” business people who donate to conservative causes and the unions will soon go after the the average person for just voting for a right wing / conservative candidate.

A lot of services in a city are run by the unions. Think about it. Here in San Diego here a short list.
    police
    firefighters
    hospitals
    schools
    colleges
    city workers
    dmv
public transportation bus / trolley / and security firm
    grocery stores
    SDG&E power company

there are many more that if they are join this OWS crap then the rest of us are screwed.

Cities need to bring the protesters to trial and get redress for damage done to public property and personal harm inflicted on the police and others. Those arrested should pay for the crimes they have committed. In contrast, looking back, there were NO legal violations for any of the Tea Party rallies. Remind me again; who are the real threat to this country? Again, cities need to shut down the protesters as most of them have no permit to demonstrate anyway! Certainly, they have no permit to camp out on public grounds. End of story. These Communists have no right to attack our country like terrorists. Shut them down!

Maybe after they acclimate to the stress of getting up and doing something/anything, we will really see some “action”, whatever that is. What they fail to understand is that people like me have never gotten involved in much…am now giving to the NRA, local Tea Party, Heritage, etc. and will give time too. Libs can thank themselves for that entirely. Actions and reactions are something they did not think through.

Fine, then let us try the traitor for the treason and rebellion they are calling for and when found guilty weld the doors shut to their cells.

While protesters failed to shut down the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the New York City transit system.. Just curious , is there any reason to shut down the NYSE or the NYC transit system ?
I mean what is the reasoning behind such foolishness ?

The only thing these Union thugs, the misfits and anarchists yes OBAMAS AMERICA have been successful at is bringing to light their absolute want to destroy the USA and reshape it in Communism ..
the misfits have accomplished NOTHING but blocking roads and streets they have prevented the everyday person from getting to and from their jobs that feed their families…

Occupying Space, blocking streets and pitching tents?

No accomplishments, nothing you have done has CHANGED anything except the everyday persons travel to and from their jobs.
You changed nothing… no policy change …. nothing.

The Tea Party brought about change and a shellacking last Nov like this country has never seen
what did you the Occupiers of Space accomplish..
an education in how to pitch a tent and occupy space?
They have tired to copy the Tea Party Movement and have failed … we are a nonviolent group who do not want to destroy this great country and you never understood it was a frame of mind.
You have accomplished nothing but disgust and destain from Americans

      Welcome to Obamas America!
Obamas do nothing misfits who occupy space we just need to look at who they take their marching orders from the “Communists SEIU Union Thugs” we know who is funding this and you know we are going to cut a BIG hole in your Union Pockets
your days are numbered in this White House … you are spitting in the wind.

We the people are gearing up in great numbers to send you packing …

      Lilly…

perfectly said….now WE…must physically and actually do what you spoke of…Rally our side…gain the massive numbers and then ACTUALLY show up to vote, whether one thinks that their vote will matter or not.

      in 2012….ALL constitutional Patriots vote…

if anyone wants to make a real difference then go out and recruit anti-Obama voters and then follow up to ensure they vote (drive them if you have too). this time around—learn from Ohio’s mistake….no one on our side stays home….no one.

      @100 MILLION PATRIOTS STANDING

It keeps me up at night when I think of what Obama would do with another four years… when he isn’t worried about reelection.

Yes, we must VOTE like our life depends on it.. and yes, no one stays home!

We will not get another chance to turn this country around, and I believe that with my whole being.

Quick correction for you, DeMint. Shutting down NYSE makes sense because it is the symbolic house of the destroyers of public quality of life and economic security. Labor sit-ins and other forms of shutting down infrastructure with nonviolent resistance have a long and proud tradition.
The NYC Transit action did not want to shut it down, they used it as an outreach to explain to subway riders what #Occupy meant to them. #Occupy has a long way to towards reaching out to the disenfranchised and giving them a public voice: the human mic and participatory democracy.

@LillyMcKim : as an #Occupier (with two jobs) I feel the need to expand your understanding. I have no faith in the ability of Obama to rebuild or restore this country… I voted for him and gave up on him the instant Tim Geithner was picked as his treasury secretary. Likewise, I have no faith in any of the Republican candidates lined up to oppose him, although I’d be willing to give Ron Paul a shot as he is the only visible candidate with any integrity.

Only our government has the ability to destroy the legal freedoms the Founders intended (thank you George Mason). It is absolutely unreasonable to expect policy changes in two short months. The civil rights movement took over a decade to accomplish their goals towards a better human future. To claim we have received only disdain is willful ignorance… the issues we embrace are concerns shared by a majority of Americans, and the polls will attest to that despite widespread media vitriol.

There are no marching orders, the movement is leaderless by design – through true democracy, born on the streets and in the public spaces – we cannot be co-opted by anyone. I know you don’t understand the meanings behind the words, but anarchism and communism are totally incompatible. We fiercely embrace personal autonomy – which is freedom. I only speak for myself and my perceptions, but I believe what we want is Participism. Go read through the three wikipedia articles (Participism, ParEcon, and ParPolity), and see what you

I’m not sure why I try to educate those that use real political terms as pejoratives, but again, I have to explain that communism and anarchism are totally incompatible.
Communism is government monopoly on force and industry.
Socialism is worker-owned industry(not government owned or privately owned).
Anarchism is the abandonment of hierarchies (unequal relationships) as the organizing structure of society.
Capitalism is the private ownership of industry, without any limits on how much a single person can control.
Corporatism (aka Mussolini’s Fascism) is the capture of government authority by the industrial ownership class. This is what Americans protested against during the Gilded Age, it’s what Teddy Roosevelt fought against, it’s what FDR fought against, it’s what Eisenhower warned against, and it’s what #Occupy is fighting against now. Through their propaganda, you have been deceived into being willing apologists for the coming fascist state, even convinced that Fascism is necessary for safety, that it is equivalent to freedom in markets. As Lex Luthor said, “Even the slaves would be tyrants, were the chance theirs.” The truth is monopolies and near-monopolies dominate every industry, and they control the market. Communism and Fascism are quite similar to the layman, they both have the same people controlling government and industry. I urge you to understand the words you use.
