Self-Defense? Vid Shows Israeli Soldier Striking Pro-Palestinian Activist Across the Face with M-16

A senior Israel Defense Force (IDF) officer is in the middle of a brewing controversy after video of him hitting a pro-Palestinian activist across the face with his M-16 rifle is gaining momentum.

The clip, posted Sunday by the International Solidarity Movement, depicts the altercation between roughly 250 activists who biked through the Jordan Valley in “silent protest” and IDF officers:

But Lt.-Col. Shalom Eisner, the soldier who hit the activist, maintains that the activist hit him first, and even broke two of his fingers.  He says he was doing his job, after trying to peacefully disperse the crowd for two hours.

The man who was hit maintains that he and other protesters were non-violent, and “it came out of nowhere.”

One of the volunteers who helped organize the bike ride explained: “We did not expect any harassment on the part of the Israeli soldiers, we just came for fun…I tried to talk to [the soldiers], to say that we only want to enjoy the beautiful road and the Jordan Valley in the springtime, but we were unsuccessful. The activists were beaten badly, and the officers just told us we couldn’t be in that area.”

Four activists were transported to the hospital after the incident for wounds sustained on their faces and backs, while another three refused medical treatment.

While most in the Israeli government have unequivocally condemned the act, Israeli political opposition expressed otherwise.

MK Michael Ben Ari said: “Well done to the IDF officer who did what Bibi [PM Netanyahu] and Aharonovich have no brain or courage to do…Radical leftists must be handled with a heavy hand. There was a tangible threat to the lives of the soldiers and the officer had no other choice. If it was a settler who was beaten we would not have heard the cries of the hypocrites on the left. Turns out they are not interested in human rights but the rights of terrorists and pro-Arabs.”

Lt.-Col Eisner has been suspended indefinitely, and PM Netanyahu remarked that “Such behavior does not characterize IDF soldiers and officers and has no place in the Israel Defense Forces and in the State of Israel.”

IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz reiterated that “the incident does not reflect IDF principles and will be thoroughly investigated.”

      @Zap= You are right, there are many cuts in the film. The film was taken by Wall Street Protesters i.e. Israeli HATERS. If you go to The Blaze story about NY Starbuck’s windows being broken out, you will see and hear that The Anarchist Book Fair is where OWS dispatches their missions. Also the American Palestinian supporters are in OWS. It looks to me like the protester was going to push past the Israeli Soldiers line of defense just like they push past NY Police. Also another clue is all the protesters are on bikes (just like OWS).

I was just looking up videos showing the aftermath of suicide bombers blowing up buses, not on the headline, before I clicked on this video showing the difference of angular versus linear speed. This kind Israeli soldier was merely Demonstrating the 3 Conditions that must be satisfied in order for the illusion of a gun butt to appear as though it stops on a useful idiots head.

      Terrible logic. If one person has a knife, that person should be arrested if he tries to use it. The one who got hit was not that person. Guilt by association doesn’t justify assaulting someone with a weapon.

      It is a fair point, but
      1. one has to look at the history of confrontations.
      2. If it there was no history & it was only 1 person acting out, I would say it is uncalled for. But if you have several such actors in a protest of 200 or 300 hundred of dozens of such bad actors in a protests of thousands, it changes the equation. It salts the lot.

      It especially salts the lot if the other protesters knew about these people ahead of time. I remember at college the college leftists “harbored” an illegal alien. The were always going on about if things didn’t go their way that he might do something. It was a very unsubtle threat. They thought they could make veiled threats but have plausible deniability. Different group of leftists same modus operandi. I have no sympathy or patience.

    First of all the Israeli soldier appears to be lying. I guess he didn’t realize the tape caught him blatantly hitting the rider/protester. Shame on him. However, we do not see what fully transpired before just this piece of tape, so we may not have all the facts. Even if the protester did attack him, did it warrant this attack?

    Having said this, why do most of those causing trouble don’t seem to be Palestinian? At the end the of the video the guy who was in handcuffs needed a translator. Where these Americans? The one girl getting first aid, she did not look hurt and also looked American.

    The whole problem here unless you were there and took all the video, you can’t trust just what you see.

      Self-Defense 101: In a hostile situation, never let someone who has the potential to cause harm to you get within arm’s reach of you. If they do, immediately strike first and ask questions later.
      A person can’t sucker punch you if you have already hit them in the face. I have unfortunately learned this the hard way. Even if someone is talking down a conflict, what they are saying and what they are thinking about doing may be two very different things. In this case I believe the protestors were trying to draw a punch or reaction from the IDF. Knowing that doesn’t change anything, when dealing with a hostile crowd you don’t know what concealed weapons one may have so like I said, hit first, ask questions later.

      Additionally, the video is edited and has been cut and pasted as can be seen at the 24 sec mark. Without seeing the unedited video in its entirety it would be pointless to make judgments.

    1) we only see what these “Activists” want us to see.
    2) We did not see what went on before this kid moved up on his blind side
    3) The broad goes charging up to the soldiers yelling and gesturing
    4) They were told NOT to go there
    5) They obviously had little fear of the armed solders doing them any serious harm
    6) The “brutal beating” did not seem to draw any blood, sounded more like a brush than a hit (a real hit to the head sounds more like thumping a melon)

    Certainly seemed unprovoked. The soldier should face punishment barring an investigation. He made the classic blunder: venting his anger while on camera. The protesters were obviously agitators, but they wanted to get hit… the soldier simply gave them more “ammo.” Giving ammunition to your enemies will get you in trouble.

      Yeah, the enemy might just start bombing school buses again, or cutting off heads with large knives, firing missiles into suburban communities, and such. Oh wait, bet they will never stop regardless. Also, you did not see the entire scene, and you are likely applying American laws in your mind. I do imagine that if the Colonel did violate Israeli law he will be dealt with. When the Palestinians murder they are usually dealt with such things as rewards, and a festive attitude.

      He did, and he was. As per the article: “Lt.-Col Eisner has been suspended indefinitely.” Seems I’m applying Israeli policy to their actions.

      These are activists, not necessarily Palestinians.

      LOCKED, I have dealt with hostile crowds before and as rough as that was, those crowds were nothing in comparison to what these crowds can become. The worst crime we could have charged somebody with might have been inciting to riot. These characters are known to murder at the drop of a hat. Frankly, beyond that I don‘t give a rat’s ass as to what happens to these murdering bastards.
      Anyway, I have been there before, what about your sorry rear end? What have you done and not just whined about to help in such a situation?

      Didn’t realize you were an Israeli who hit activists in the face with your gun. Sorry, no, I haven’t been there. Watching OWS punks get arrested in droves last year while off to the side laughing madly has been my extent of dealing with protests. Hey… wait a second… they got arrested just fine. Why can’t Israelis do that again?

    When protesters get what they really want – the cap beaten out of them on camera, we should be glad they got what they wanted and not vilify the one who gave him what he wanted.       CHIEFGEORGE, you are spot on. And, keep in mind that these are the same people who will saw a man’s head off with a large knife in front of a video camera. If the population of the Israeli area were reversed what do you think would happen to any Jewish demonstrators? Actually, you can’t really imagine that. There would be no Jewish demonstrators.

      These people (Israelis) may be fighting for their lives soon. These pesky pro-palestinian/anti-war/anti-Israel protesters need to be reminded from time to time that you my get your arse handed to you, or your nose bloodied (these Israeli troops are serious) if you get too close. If you can’t take the smackdown for your antics, then you might want to contain your protesting to standing on a street corner in a peaceful suburb with a sign that says… “honk if you agree with me”, or some lame crap like that.
