‘I Don’t Think You All Get It’: Fed-Up Sen. Coburn Tangles With MSBNC Panel Over Tea Party & Constitution

The Blaze’s Benny Johnson contributed to this report.

I Dont Think You All Get It: Fed Up Sen. Coburn Tangles With MSBNC Panel Over Tea Party & Constitution

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)

On Thursday, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and blasted the show’s panel for misrepresenting the principles of the Tea Party, saying they just don’t “get it.” He also gave the panel a solid history lesson on the Constitution after at least one panelist admitted he was unsure in which section the enumerated powers were located.

After talking fondly of Texas candidate for U.S. Senate Ted Cruz and his victory in the runoff election, Coburn said he was “really amused” by the way they spoke about the Tea Party. “I don’t think you all get it,” he added.

“The Tea Party is every person in America who really is fed up with Washington and recognizes the way we got there was abandoning the core principles of our country but also abandoning the Constitution,” Coburn said.

Co-host Lawrence O’Donnell chimed in and completely changed the subject, not even addressing what Coburn had just said. Instead, O’Donnell brought up how Coburn had recently apologized to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — a topic that came completely out of the blue.

Shortly after, one of the panelists suggested that his public display of civility would work against him within the Tea Party. This is where Coburn started to heat up.

“You are seeing them totally different than what they are,” he said. “The picture you paint doesn’t come close to anybody I know in the Tea Party.”

I Dont Think You All Get It: Fed Up Sen. Coburn Tangles With MSBNC Panel Over Tea Party & Constitution

Washington Post reporter and MSNBC contributor Jonathan Capehart went on to ask Coburn to provide examples of how the United States has abandoned the Constitution. And so he did.

“Go read Article 1, Section 8 and it gives the enumerated powers… The American people get it and our founders got it. And the one part of the balance of power that doesn‘t get talked about and what you’re seeing expressed through the Tea Party is the real balance of power that our founders wanted is we the people to hold the government accountable. And that‘s what’s going to start happening in this country,” he replied.

“We’re $16 trillion in debt. We have totally cut the legs out from underneath our kids and grand kids and now we‘re saying there’s something wrong with the people that want to get back to the thing that built this country rather than the thing that tore it down.”

After asking the initial question, Capehart then admitted he wasn’t even familiar with the article of the Constitution that Coburn was talking about — even though the senator mentioned the words “enumerated powers” in his explanation.

“Senator, Article 1, Section 8, I should know this but I don’t…” Capehart admitted. Though Coburn could have easily inserted a snide remark, he simply gave the entire MSNBC panel a free lesson on America’s founding principles.

“The Constitution is loaded with ‘No’s’. It’s not loaded with ‘Yes’s,’” he explained. “We’ve expanded the federal government outside the range, outside the range of what our founders ever thought the federal government would have a hand in. You can‘t go anywhere that the federal government doesn’t have involvement and wrongly so, because quite frankly, even though we’re well intentioned, we’re not very good at doing these things.”

Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein then snidely remarked that if the Tea Party really want to reign in the size of the government, they would, in theory, be in support of cutting and “trimming the fat” off the Defense Department budget. But as Coburn pointed out, he made the mistake of lumping Republicans and the Tea Party into one category, a common mistake of the left.

“The fact is, is just because you’re a Republican, doesn’t mean you embrace the principles of the Tea Party,” Coburn said.

The senator from Oklahoma then destroyed Steins’s premise that Tea Party members are opposed to any real cuts to the DoD as he previously suggested.

I can find the fat in the Pentagon. They’re [members calling for a halt to sequestration cuts to DoD] just not willing to do it. They don‘t believe it’s there. I believe it’s there. I’ve studied it. I put out one trillion dollars worth of cuts in the Pentagon over the next ten years. We can do that. The point is, they are worried that we will cut into the actual real thing that will keep us defended, and I understand that concern. Plus, sequestering is stupid.”

Coburn went on:

“We do need to have a strong defense. But the defense of this country and our ability to defend ourselves is based on our economic strength. And you cannot have a strong defense without a strong economically viable, growing nation. What we’ve done is spent way too much money and not had any grown-ups in the room when it comes to major weapons systems.”

“There is no grown-up in the room to say ‘the bells and whistles got to stop. Here’s how much we can afford to spend to get to this technology.’ And because there’s no grown-up or limit on what we can spend, innovation dries up and what we do is we suck the dollars out of the Pentagon, appropriately so, but because there’s no adult watching. “

Well said, Mr. Coburn. Glad to have you with us and thank you for working to serve the people and respecting and obeying our Constitution. I’ve had enough of politicians simply buying votes, cowering to political (in)correctness, and recklessly pandering to special interests and cronies. Mr. Coburn nailed it.
Although Mr. Coburn is retiring. Those who voted for him got it right. Thank you, Oklahoma. I wish my state understood. The Chick-Fil-A day was a big win here, but the big cities like Denver and Boulder (Colorado’s San Fransisco) get it wrong EVERY single time.

Many people in America have fond memories of the journalist back in the days of Walter Leland Cronkite, Jr, who earned the title “the most trusted man in America”, Chester Robert “Chet” Huntley, David McClure Brinkley and Ernest Taylor Pyle. Most Americans knew these reporters by their nickname or their closing “Goodnight David and Goodnight Chet” or “That’s the way it was”. If the had any political agenda they separated it from their news reporting. The facts they reported was either eye witness accounts or had to be verified and re-verified before being broadcast on the airwaves. The managing Editors in their day were tough and would fire anyone if a lie or an untruth were published. Now it seams to be a practice or political innuendo. Neither the right or the left seem to have the honesty or the quality required in those days

I’d honestly go so far as to say much of the MSM (and MSNBC in particular) are actually traitorous in their reporting and commentary; intentionally mis-reporting established facts and twisting anything conservatives say so out of context as to be unrecognizable and fueling the self-loathing which has contaminated a once proud country.

Yep. I’m coming to think W. T. Sherman had the right idea – regarding the manner with which one should deal with/treat the (hostile) press. (I’ll leave it to you, dear reader, to discover my meaning on your own.)

The conditions are if the police say they thought they were within the bounds of the fourth amendment, evidence is admissible. So, as long as the police THINK they are not violating your rights, it is OK to do so.

Can we convict someone on murder charges on a reasonable belief that they did it, or convict on burglary on a reasonable belief that they did it or issue a speeding ticket on reasonable belief someone was speeding? I remember catching it late night a few months ago and, once again, was thoroughly educated by the Senator. It is a must watch if you truly care about these subjects. Note: I wouldn‘t say put him in as VP but I would have him in Romney’s cabinet along with Paul Ryan. Both parties would do well to get rid of some of the “LIFERS” in Washington and get more “COBURNS” (people who are willing to make decisions for the good of the Republic). You can also see that no matter how many MSNBC News Contributors you stack against a COBURN, they will lose!

These people are not interested in the truth. They have their own agenda and have never watched and listened at any tea party event. They are perfectly happy to talk out of their arse. They won’t come to any event either because their whole world would collapse. Everything they heard and believed and were brainwashed about the tea party doesn’t exist. I don’t they think they could handle to shock and surprise that would occur.

We are trying to preserve this country for our kids. They just want their kids enslaved, black or white that is where we are headed, when are people going to wake up.

Senator Coburn gets it! While he is often labelled (incorrectly I might add) as Mr. No, he is a true a statesman as there is in Washington today. He has identified so much duplication and waste and as a whole, Congress does not want to do anything about. Keep up the fight Senator Coburn. Most Americans stand behind you!

And they believe they are smarter than the rest of us. Without understanding that they have been taught what is false but so indoctrinated that reason is gone and irrationality rules. MSM proves it everyday in every way.

We should weaken our military and stop using the military as humanitarian aid and stop interfering in other countries affairs. If a country screws with us or becomes a direct threat to our safety we saturate the country with bombs to teach the citizens a lesson about their leaders just like WWII. Stop this “winning their hearts and minds” BS instill fear and move on. Here’s some news to people; some countries are filled with stupid people and need dictators to operate examples EGYPT, LEBANON.

I agree whole heartedly. I never received training on the military on how to this when I was in. All we learned was to blow things up, fix things that blows things up, or kill people. That’s what the military is for.

      Here here!

Military is for defeating enemies on a battlefield. Period.

The reason we have so much war is because A) we’ve expanded the mission to ridiculous objectives and B) we’ve used technology to make it palatable.

As many of you know, I’m one of those “Paulbots” (hat tip to kickin). I will be the LAST person in the room to vote to go to war. I promise you that. HOWEVER, when I’m in I would VOTE TO GO TO WAR. Undeclared wars are unconstitutional as far as I’m concerned. So once I make that vote, I’d make the following war the most horrific destruction that mankind has seen. Total destruction. Lay waste to everything and everyone. I’d make the whole planet stop and shudder at the thought of ever going to war again. Every time in the future that some nation thought it would be prudent to engage in conflict the could reflect on the history books and see what war really is.

And once that war was over, I’d work on healing and rebuilding and trading and making things and engaging in peaceful relations with any nation on earth that would do so.

msnbc drones are constitutionally illiterate, what’s the story here? We’ve expanded the federal government outside the range of what our Founders ever thought the federal government would have a hand in. You can‘t go anywhere that the federal government doesn’t have involvement and wrongly so, because quite frankly, even though we’re well intentioned, we’re not very good at doing these things.” The senator is correct and the road to hell is paved with good intentions and this regime is paving the way that’s for damn sure.

I would disagree on the good intentions part. I believe the liberals intentions are to make us a non-super power but they must do it covertly because the American people want to maintain our super-power status. I believe most liberals would gladly hand over our sovereignty to the U.N. so that we would be ruled by the leftist elites (like themselves).
