Sen. Coburn Said What? ‘Good Thing I Can’t Pack a Gun on the Senate Floor’

Senator Tom Coburn Talks About Bringing Gun on Senat Floor

UPDATED BELOW: COBURN EXPLAINS HIS COMMENTS ON TULSA RADIO THIS MORNING.

Following some bold — and possibly bizarre — statements made to constituents during a swing through NE Oklahoma on Tuesday, Senator Tom Coburn’s office is probably going to be answering a lot of questions today. That’s because he said everything from accusing the president of benefiting from “programs” because he is black, to making a comment about packing a gun on the Senate floor.

The Tulsa World covered all four appearances by Senator Coburn and provides us with some of the statements.

The comment garnering the most attention is the Republican Senator’s statement where he discussed guns while talking about the lack of courage in the House and Senate:

“It‘s just a good thing I can’t pack a gun on the Senate floor.”

Tulsa World did not elaborate on what he meant.

But he wasn’t done. Speaking to the Chamber of Commerce in Langley, OK. Coburn made some rather dire predictions for the American economy:

“We have less than 16 months to fix this. I can promise you that come July you’re going to see some tough, tough stuff in this country.”

Then the senator took on the president. When asked about Obama by one attendee, the Tulsa World reports that Coburn described Obama as “very bright” but with a political philosophy that Coburn believes to be “goofy and wrong.” The Tulsa World story adds a few more curious quotes from Coburn about President Obama:

Obama’s “intent is not to destroy, his intent is to create dependency because it worked so well for him,” he said.

“As an African-American male,” Coburn said, Obama received “tremendous advantage from a lot of these programs.”

Senator Coburn also seems to have an interesting view of the importance of Congress vs the President. He reportedly said: “I don’t think presidents matter that much.”

Coburn is no stranger to unvarnished speech. Following the Debt Ceiling deal, the Senator’s comments and dour outlook on spending reductions were covered here on The Blaze. One might suppose that Senator Coburn’s raw honesty is a by-product of his self-imposed term limits. Earlier this year he announced that he will not be running for a third term in 2016.

The Senator’s public schedule includes two more “Town Hall” appearances today in the Oklahoma City area. If you are interested in attending, visit Coburn’s website for locations and times.

The Senator did speak with radio host Pat Campbell this morning, offering further clarification on his comments.

This guy also says that if you suffer a catastophic health problem you should go around your neighborhood knocking on doors asking for help instead of expecting any help from government.

Yep! I feel the same way, Senator Coburn, when I have to leave my weapon of choice in the car or at home. Feel absolutely naked! When I saw that incident in Killeen, Tx. years ago where a gunman came in and shot up a Furr’s cafeteria, I decided to always be ready. The poor woman who could carry, left it in the car thinking she didn’t need it. I believe her parents were killed by this idiot gunman.
Always be prepared is my motto! You never know when you need to defend yourself or others.

Do you even own a gun? The first rule you should learn is you never point a gun unless you mean to kill. Shooting a gun in Congress (even at a wall) to make a point? No. HELL no. Coburn tried to make a joke, and came off as unstable.

Then he was ONE of THE GANG OF SIX and defended it because he had become BUDDIES with OBAMA when Obama was in the Senate.

Then after the Gang of 6 screwed up the Cut, Cap & Balance bill and he voted AGAINST the Senate revised Boehner Debt BULL. (But he voted FOR the SCAM BULL in the HOUSE)

He probably said people should do that since he knows what can happen if you give the government too much power. In countries like the ones America is trying to become more like, really sick and injured people are usually denied care because of rationing or, in extreme cases, are even put to death. It scares me how utilitarian and “utopian” America is becoming. As Fred Thompson said in 2008, “A government that can give you anything can take anything away from you.” Obamacare is just one step closer to that.

I bet fewer people would be on “government” assistance of all types if they had to ask their next door neighbor directly for money.

You do realize that the Government doesn’t have any money until they take it from you and your neighbor. Assuming that you and your neighbor actually pay any taxes after filing your tax return.

They began talking about the state of the African American communities and how they are at least double the unemployment of the rest of the country. Yet they also mentioned that 90% of that base still has a favorable notion of him. How can that be when BHO promised the african american communites better jobs specifically in his capaigne08. This is beyond words. You vote for a guy who says hes gonna change the status of your community and its gotten worse over ~3 years yet he still remains at 90% favorable rating. They will vote for a losing president with no clear cut policy to get folks to work just because of his color. Now, just how smart is this? As we’ve pointed out, his color has nothing to do with his being inept. It’s his inability to govern like a President is supposed to do.
When you spend your formative years in a muslim school in Indonesia, you really don‘t understand America or it’s people. He is NOT good for America trying to bring us down to a 3rd world classification. I’ve been to Indonesia and see how the 3rd world live. Term Limits are only legal if the Congress passes an amendment to the US Constitution. and 3/4 of the states ratify it. It takes 2/3rds of the states to call for a constitutional convention, and once it is called, congress has no choice but to do it.

Not even a state can impose term limits on anybody within the congress.
Washington State did just that, with Speaker of the House Tom Foley, and the US Supreme Court struck it down as unconstitutional

Mr. Coburn is my Senator. He and I do not always see eye to eye but he has an open mind. I moved to Oklahoma 2 years ago after 60 years in California. Oklahoma is a breathe of fresh air. The California Liberals will not budge for any reason. I think term limits are a wonderful idea with the caveat that there be some protection from legislators benefitting from lobbyists from their votes after leaving office .

Oklahomans speak their mind. We need as little Federal Intervention as possible. Many Government Agencies and Departments need to be done away with are greatly neutered, such as EPA, Education,etc.. Obama Care must be abolished. Political Correctness is to be NO more. Good Job Senator Coburn !!!

You should have kept that gun comment to yourself, then actually have…then what would have happened next could have been a 2 hour TV movie that the majority of the obamanites in this country would believe as truth. Then by the time elections roll around in 2012, Obama gets re-elected and the world blows up in January of 2013…

He is only saying what most people privately know to be the truth. Obama has led a life of entitlements becuase of the fact he came from a broken home, his mother was a white trash, drug addict, hippie slut and his father was a black man who left them. He changed his name to Barry when is served him to be more white and then became more black when that served him. He received a free education because of the color of his skin not because he acttually deserved it. He was chosen to become the president by the Progressive Left wing because he was black… and white… and a little bit Muslim. He was chosen because he was able to hide his past and had no record to hurt him. He was even awarded the Nobel peace prize for something he hadn’t even accomplished, because he is black.

Our country need to elect the best man or woman who is best qualified to lead our country. We should never elect a person because of their skin color, heritage, sex, religion or other factors that has nothing to do with real qualifications.

The black community, the latino community and our youth, who all supported Obama for the wrong reasons are now the first to suffer for his failed policies. Now that Obama has a record that he cannot hide from, hopefully the ones he has hurt with see the light in 2012.

coloradomaverick: I agree with you. I didn’t see anything that Senator Colburn said that was not true. In fact, I’ve always supported him, and think that he should run for the office of President.
Obama is a disgrace to America. So is his administration. The liar-in-chief. And how he is able to run for president again is beyond me…did I miss something!? Where is the proof of a bir$$th certi***ficate, and what about the fraud***ulent soc. security number? Those questions haven’t been answered yet. How this guy gets away with so much is beyond my understanding.
Senator Colburn is just trying to point out that we are in a whole heap of trouble here in this Country, but no one seems to be listening, let alone doing anything about it. Such a shame. Hard to respect most members of Congress anymore…not many of them seem to have a backbone.

Well, these are nice statements coming from a senator – no wonder our country is going to hell in a hand basket. Of course if the senate didn’t try to block everything that Obama wanted to do – we might not be in the situation we are in. Coburn doesnt think the President is that important? Well, frankly from what has come out of Coburn’s mouth, I dont believe he is that important!! http://wp.me/pYLB7-1sY

Who said this? “When you bring a knife to a fight I bring a gun”….enough said. F*** em if they can’t take a joke, even if it‘s a bad one said out of frustration having to be a congress under an Affirmative Action hire who shouldn’t even be in DC period much less running the nation.

If Obama isn’t the perfect argument for the abolition of Affirmative Action nothing ever will be. Today in the American Thinker BTW……”Obama, the Affirmative Action President”… http://bit.ly/ormDaN

FInally people in the media even on the right get some ‘nads to speak the truth. That‘s all he is and it’s such a sad sad statement as to what America has become, self destructing over white guilt and nothing less.

Well, I can’t say that I think his unbridled, open-mouth-before-first-engaging-brain strategy is the best one but it is certainly possible to understand that Coburn is feeling stymied by an administration with which he (obviously) vehemently disagrees; certainly a lot of us feel that way, too. But I don‘t think that we’d state our discontent in quite those same terms and definitely NOT on the floor of the House or in a public town hall meeting.

Why do politicians when they get out in the real world say things they would never say in D.C. as if the Liberal press isn`t going to jump on any non P C statement they utter? Especially if they are Republicans. Must be the clean air that is lacking in the nation `s Capital.

What’s pathetic is pseudo-erudite obsessional progressives who somehow believe that editing someone’s grammar or spelling will further their cause and diminish the worth of conservative ideas. Look at yourself professor – using both a question mark and an exclamation mark is definitely not grammatically correct nor is the use of double question marks. These are merely cheap slang expressions. So, if you have a thoughtful idea express it. Otherwise, you should lay off the grammar lessons.
