Sen. McConnell: Obama Agenda Is ‘Over’

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declared Saturday that President Barack Obama’s legislative agenda is “over,“ but said GOP lawmakers are willing to work with the White House to do what they ”think is right for America.”

In a speech Saturday night to a GOP crowd in his hometown, the Kentucky Republican derided Obama for performing “Clintonian back flips” to portray himself as a moderate, but said it’s yet to be seen whether the new tone is “rhetoric or reality.”

McConnell, who in the past has touted his ability to bring federal spending to Kentucky, took a hard line on cutting federal spending. He said the Democratic president’s credentials on spending and debt “are horrible, and he earned it.”

But McConnell said that congressional Republicans — who took control of the House and increased their numbers in the Senate following last year’s election — are “prepared to do business” with Obama.

“And to the extent that the president wants to do what we think is right for America, we won‘t say ’no‘ simply because there’s an election coming along,” said McConnell.

After the fall elections, McConnell was criticized for saying his No. 1 goal was to make Obama a one-term president. But her later worked with the president to push through an extension of Bush administration tax cuts, including for top-earners.

Still, McConnell drew cheers from the partisan crowd when he declared: “The legislative agenda of Barack Obama is over.”

McConnell also laid out the strategy of Senate Republicans, saying, “Whatever the House can get out of the House with a majority vote is the goal of the Senate.”

While Republicans remain in the minority in the Senate, McConnell said Democratic senators facing re-election next year have a political motivation to join GOP lawmakers in pushing for spending cuts.

“We’ll see how many of them come over and join us and begin to tackle our annual deficit,” he said.

McConnell said the national debt has grown rapidly with the stimulus spending under Obama, and yet national unemployment remains stubbornly high.

McConnell warned that cutting federal spending won’t come without some pain.

“Everybody is going to have to do with less if we’re going to get this job done,” he said. “And we need to get it done.”

Its amazing to me that the drive by media thinks that the conservative base in this country is a bunch of uneducated hicks. Now they are trying to portray Obama as Reagan thinking that us stupid hicks will vote for him because Reagans name is used. Is that not an insult to our intelligence. Obama is nothing but dark skinned Jimmy Carter on steroids and he will be a one term president.

It is not over. Michelle Obama wants amnesty for illegal aliens. We will not allow that. That is why the Democrats were voted out in November 2010. No amnesty for illegal aliens. Deport them now.

First Lady Michelle Obama called on the Latino community to put pressure on Republicans to support comprehensive immigration legislation.

In an interview with Univision, the first lady said President Obama wanted to pass immigration legislation, but could not find enough support among Republicans to move a bill.

The DREAM Act, a bill to give undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children and are pursuing higher education an opportunity to become U.S. citizens, had little support among Republicans, she said. The latest attempt to pass the legislation failed in December.

“So I urge the Latino community, he needs help, he’s got to have Republicans and Democrats in Congress who are going to step up,” the first lady said. “If a sound immigration bill gets put on the President’s desk he is going to sign it. But it’s got to get through Congress. He can’t do it alone.”

Asked if the president pushed hard enough to pass an immigration bill, the first lady defended her husband.

“Immigration reform has been at the top of my husband’s agenda from the minute he thought about running for this office,” she said, adding later, “But people have to know that the President can‘t pass immigration reform without the support of Congress and we don’t have that.”

I kind of like McConnell but he is still a politician making yet another political speech to his constituency here. The first comment by ‘HappyStretchedThin’ says it all…It “makes a nice headline”, but I would add, headlines don’t feed my grandchildren.

Our response should always be..Show us the goods. When we see hard evidence that spending cuts are in place and efforts to continue responsible reduction of the giant bureaucracy are being made, then maybe we can begin to trust them a little.

It will be interesting to see how liberal Reid “leading” the Senate and his followers respond to the House spending cuts. Obama will no doubt interject himself in the middle and say “now, now, lets play nice, we can compromise.” Don’t do it GOP. Even $100 billion is a drop in the bucket of what we need to cut. I wish we would have taken the Senate too-it would have made this much more doable.

Obama is an “Imperialist” that he falsely claims to be against. He is EXACTLY like the almost 30 year dictator of Egypt that was just thrown out of power. His speech to the Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC – included the words: “you can’t just worry about your bottom line, you must also make sure that your workers benefit from the profits”. Spread the wealth. Dissolve the investor class who expect a return on their investment. Reward those who have not risked or invested anything. It’s the Communist way.

The very worst thing that can happen in the USA, is to have this Imperialist re-elected in 2012. If he wins re-election in 2012, the very next thing to happen will be to end the two term limit for Presidents.

Goldman Sachs agreed Thursday to pay $550 million to settle a fraud suit brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission that accused the storied Wall Street bank of selling a subprime-mortgage investment that was secretly designed to fail.

The fine is the largest the SEC has ever assessed against a financial company. But the settlement also is striking because Goldman agreed to a host of changes to how it does business and because the bank, while not admitting wrongdoing, agreed to express “regret” for including “incomplete information” in marketing materials touting the investment to clients.

By doing so, Goldman acknowledged “the fundamental basis of our complaint,” SEC enforcement director Robert Khuzami said at a news conference, standing with 10 colleagues who worked on the case. “Today’s settlement is a stark reminder — a very stark reminder — that there will be a heavy price to be paid if firms violate the principles fundamental to securities law.”

While Goldman will pay only a tiny fraction of its $13 billion in annual profits to resolve the claims, the settlement represents a black mark for the bank, which had insisted since the suit was filed three months ago that it had done nothing wrong. It comes on the same day that Congress sent legislation to the president to curb many Wall Street practices — including ones that have made Goldman a lot of money.

Indeed the forces of darkness they have do seem overwhelming; yet we have to remember and take faith in the fact we do have the Almighty upon our side, even when all seems hopeless and lost unto us at any time. The storm at hand will be hard, and fierece, yet ultimately the nation will only pass to the night if we all give up upon Him and Jesus.

Yes it will be hard to make the changes needed, the progressive agenda has had 100 or so years to make the new structure of theirs, yet they also have pushed far and fast, seeking to extend their own grasp at this time that they are over reaching indeed and America is ready to shove THEM down to the ground.

We can change things around, and the future will be bright indeed.

So morning Grandmaof5, hope all is above the 29degrees you mentioned yesterday (if I remember it correctly), and wish you well; also a new work is up in my gallery, just click the link on my screen name and look for concept 28.
