Sen. Rand Paul Cuts $500K From His Office Budget, Returns it to Treasury

When freshman Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was elected in 2010, he promised to cut federal spending.
It looks like he’s making good on his promise.
“The Kentucky Republican and tea-party favorite said Thursday he’s returning $500,000 to the U.S. Treasury – money from his operating budget that his office never spent,” writes Scott Wong of Politico, and “he contends no senator has returned as much to taxpayers.”
Watch the entire press conference via courier-journal.com:
U.S. Senators are appropriated $3 million a year for their office budgets and Sen. Paul has been able to save nearly 15 percent of his annual costs, according to WFLP News.
How does he do it? Some would say frugality.
“We look at all of our office expenses. We look at the coffee pot to the computers bought and we try to buy things as if it were our money we were spending, or your money that we were spending, and our goal is not to spend all of it, our goal is to save some of it,” Paul said.
If Congress offered incentives for lawmakers and staff to cut budgets, the U.S. could save $130 million annually, Paul added.
“I ran to stop the reckless spending. And I ran to end the damaging process of elected officials acting as errand boys, competing to see who could bring back the biggest check and the most amount of pork,” Paul said at a news conference in Louisville, where he presented taxpayers with a massive mock check for $500,000.

“I hope this sets an example for the rest of government – at all levels,” he added. “We can carry out our duties in a fiscally responsible way. Government can be both smart and efficient. We are proving that – and trying to convince the rest of Washington.”
As Business Insider rightly points out, critics of Sen. Rand Paul will probably denounce him for returning the $500,000 and attack him for not using the money “to create jobs,” as Michael Brendan Dougherty of BI put it.
However, these criticisms will probably fall on deaf ears.
“Most American families have been forced to figure out how to do more with less, or how to do less altogether. It’s nice to see a Senator joining us,” Dougherty writes.
Many would agree, and find this a very welcome change of pace.

Posted on January 12, 2012 at 8:13pmI must disagree with Senator Rand Paul on his decision to return $500k to the Treasury.
Returning the money to the federal Treasury DOES NOT return it to the taxpayers. What he should have done is planned to spend $500k less in his state, and then REFRAIN from stealing the peoples’ money, accordingly.
Constitutionally, the federal government gets its funding from the states, which in turn get their funding from counties, they from cities, they from individuals.
Unless the federal government reduces the amount of taxes taken from Kentucky by $500k, the taxpayers will have lost that money.

We joined forces with someone worse than Hitler, though. So what we ended up doing was actually worse than what Ron Paul would have done.
Also, there wouldn’t have even been a WWII had Ron Paul been President during WWI.
Also, Ron Paul wouldn’t have provoked the attack on Pearl Harbor that got us involved in WWII.
See here.
Rethinking the Good War

“Was it necessary that tens of millions were slaughtered to prevent Hitler from slaughtering millions? Was it wise to join forces with a brutal dictator like Stalin, who had already killed millions, with the result that he enslaved half of Europe under communism?”
…
“World War I was not our war. In a memo written at the end of World War II, Churchill wrote:
“This war should never have come unless, under American and modernizing pressure, we had driven the Habsburgs out of Austria and the Hohenzollerns out of Germany. By making these vacuums we gave the opening for the Hitlerite monster to crawl out of its sewer onto the vacant thrones. No doubt these views are very unfashionable.”

If he was successful, there would have been no need for any declaration of war against Germany, as there would have been no Adolph Hitler and his Nazis in charge. He would have been, instead, an unknown house painter. You don’t have to be a Jew to want to exploit fiat money systems, for example – fiat money systems can be exploited by any money creator that can hide their books.
It would not affect my perception of Jews as being people just like me, were I to learn that most of the exploiters are Jews. To suppose otherwise would be a non sequitur.

These are TWO different men entirely.
Ron Paul would never vote for sanctions as he considers them an act of war.
Rand Paul recently voted for sanctions.
It’s not fair dumping your dislike of Ron Paul onto Rand Paul.

After all..who better to carry on his dad’s legacy..I trust Ron Paul..He is brilliant..I am sure that Rand has the same values and the same intelligence and loves our country and our people as much as his dad does.. Who better to run with Ron Paul..We need this team at this time in history..Remember..Ron Paul predicted the financial meltdown years before it happened..he also predicted with precise accuracy what was going to happen in foreign affairs..Paul is a man with great insight..We would be so fortunate to have both father and son.

Posted on January 12, 2012 at 8:04pmI think that is a misquote from the video. He spoke about congress offering incentives for civil servants to save money…not the congressmen them selves. That’s the standard government practice. I know from experience. Every manager in government is incentivised now to spend all of their budgeted money, its a mad dash at the end of the fiscal year, so the budget for the next year won’t be reduced.

Some say..well what has he really accomplished as a Congressman..He has fought for us every step of the way while the others voted for themselves via special interest groups. They have voted themselves pay increases and so much retirement that after one term..they and their spouses are paid big bucks for the rest ot their lives..They were not placed under Obamacare but had a great insuramce like kings and queens.. Posted on January 12, 2012 at 11:59pmWell, Paul was third in Iowa, loosing by only 3%. He came in second with 23% in NH, leaving the rest in the dust. And is within top 3 in SC. Obviously, a candidate that is able to keep a steady support, and not have any up or down spikes, means he has more supporters than say Gingrich or Santorum, who both got 9.4% in NH. And don’t forget, two months ago Gingrich had 7% support and Santorum had 3-5% support, while Paul had a steady but slowly rising support of 12%-14%. Why in the world would any candidate with that kind of support drop out? Oh, right. Because the MSM says he can’t win. And they never lie, right?

Posted on January 13, 2012 at 5:47amBADDOGGY Paul is a cherry picker when it comes to the continuation. Considering that Washington invaded Canada and Jefferson sent the navy after the Barbary Pirates(Islam), it is a bit rich to compare their foreign policy with Ron Paul’s, don’t you think? Madison wanted no part of the Articles of Confederation, or the pure “states’ rights” position, which is a misnomer considering states do not have rights. Ron Paul’s position, at best, would turn the states into separate warring “factions” (i.e. what Madison wanted to avoid)
Report Post »Nanner-SW
Posted on January 13, 2012 at 12:35pmThe foreign policy of everything or nothing. Allow countries to be independent (do not mess with them in hopes that they don’t mess with you), and if they mess with you (congress decides they are a legitimate threat) destroy them. No need to have feet on the ground (after all you only do that when you want to protect something, resources, land, people). Just blow away all government and military locations. Problem: this policy relies on congress to do their job. Problem: this policy relies on citizens to hold their politicians accountable. Problem: most citizens do not hold civic responsibility in high regard. The problem with most libertarian policies is that it relies on people to be responsible, that if given the ability people will do the right/responsible thing. I want to believe in people, but I fear in this environment/our current government we could get hit multiple times and congress would still not declare war. Please libertarian people give me hope that people can be responsible and change my pov. I want to believe in people, hope y’all have a good day.
