Senate Defeats Blunt’s Conscience Exemption Amendment

Blunt Amendment Voted Down in Senate

Sen. Roy Blunt (AP)

The Senate has tabled the conscience exemption to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, voting down an amendment which would have protected private employers’ rights to oppose offering services to their employees that they believe to be morally objectionable. The amendment, attached to a transportation bill, was put forth by Roy Blunt, a pro-life Republican senator from Missouri, and was in response to the recent controversy involving the President and the Catholic Church in regards to an HHS decision that would have mandated church-based organizations to provide coverage of contraception within their employee health benefits. AP reports:

“The Senate has defeated a Republican effort to roll back President Barack Obama’s policy on contraception insurance coverage.

The measure sponsored by Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, a Republican, was defeated 51-48. The measure, an amendment to a pending transportation bill, would have allowed employers and insurers to opt out of portions of the president’s health care law they found morally objectionable. That would have included the law’s requirement that insurers cover the costs of birth control.

Republicans said it was a matter of freedom of religion; Democrats said it was an assault on women’s rights and could be used to cancel virtually any part of the law.”

POLITICO reports that the 51-48 vote was largely along party lines with the exception of Democratic Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania joining Republicans in support of the Amendment. Outgoing Maine Republican Senator Olympia Snowe joined Democrats.

“Most of us probably assumed that if religious liberty were ever seriously challenged in this country, we could always expect a robust bipartisan defense of it at least from within the Congress itself,” POLITICO reports Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on the Senate floor Thursday. “But unfortunately that’s not the situation we find ourselves in.”

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney ignited a media firestorm Wednesday, when he first said he opposed the amendment during an interview on ONN, only to have his campaign quickly email reporters to say that Romney did indeed support the amendment, but “the way the question was asked was confusing.”

It so obvious that these immoral men and women don‘t give a flying crap about what American’s want. Its also obvious that they don’t care if they lose their jobs in November. Its time to show them and even a few Republican’s who is boss. Somehow these morons have forgot they work for us, not us work for them. Unfortuantely because of their deeds we will be, our grandchildren will be and possibly our greatgrandchildren will be paying off the debts of these people ignorance. I sure would like to see how they keep their checkbooks.. Its horrible that they aren‘t smart enough or don’t care enough to see the bank account of America! The Progressives (commies) in Washington DC are like Al Capone and his Chicago mob and they’re “takin’ ova da joint”. What are YOU going to do?

MALLONE: “You said you wanted to know how to get Capone. Do you really want to get him? You see what l’m saying? What are you prepared to do?”

MALLONE: “And then what are you prepared to do? If you open the ball on these people, you must be prepared to go all the way. Because they won’t give up the fight until one of you is dead.”

NESS: “I want to get Capone. I don’t know how.”

MALLONE: “Here’s how you get Capone. He pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to hospital, you send one of his to the morgue! That’s the Chicago way! And that’s how you get Capone. Now, do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?”

Unless the Marxist democrats in America are removed from power-America is doomed. They are an existential threat to everyone including those who are brain washed by their propaganda. Their whole purpose is to destroy liberty, advance sexual perversion, extort money, remove individual accountability ,deny responsibility, and along the way disconnect the US citizen from his constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom and privacy, while eradicating Christianity from the public arena.

How does one process the insidious mindset of the modern leftist politician-The only plausible explanation is that there are forces in play in this world that go beyond human agency- they are supernatural, they are ancient, they are evil, and they are at war with God and all that is holy, sacred, innocent, righteous, and true.WAKE UP

      Well, let’s see:
      1. Sc.re*w you and Anglo Saxon law of a thousand years ago. Our civilization evolved since then. Not even all the states in America follow this basis of law–Louisiana follows the much more moral and modern, but still anachronistic Napoleonic Code.
      2. The Blunt ammendment would have allowed any employer to refuse to cover any condition, procedure, or medicine under the guise of ‘conscience exemption.‘ I don’t have to tell you how many greedy, unscrupulous, usurous employers there are in the US–they could use this to refuse coverage arbitrarily for anything to anyone.
      3. Your faux emotionalism and outrage is a symptom of paranoia that is fanned by TV/Radio/Internet personalities like Beck and Rush and .Alex Jones. It is not genuine. It is mass hysteria.

The mandate of free contraception is only part of the bigger issue. Conservatives need to roll back this conversation to a more fundamental point: The federal government has NO business mandating that we HAVE to buy insurance, and our employers HAVE to offer insurance AT ALL….let alone mandating what HAS to be covered. It is constitutionally UNSOUND and has NO place in a free republic. We need to repeal the whole law.

Absolutely INCORRECT, individual liberty trumps religious conscience. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, means the Congress is forbidden from making a law that establishes religious conscience as law over individual liberty. What is so F-ing hard to understand about that?

@Echohawk, upholding the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution is NOT the establishment of a religious state. The 1st Amedment was created to protect individual religious liberty from the state. When the government mandates the violation of individual liberty it is tyranny. Mandating taxpayer funded free contraception against religious conscience is the implementation of the collectivist religion of eugenics.

Go back to Constitutional Studies 101 and the intention of our founders, not the subversive “living” Constitution with which Progressives attempt to re-write our nation’s history.

Bonnieblue2A, you must have absent the day they taught the First Amendment in “Constitutional Studies 101” Your so called “individual religious liberty” exists only in your mind, it begins and ends there, any extension of your religious liberty ends at the infringement upon an individuals liberty. Religion involves institutions, customs, dogma, they can all be practiced freely by those that choose. Religions attempt to coerce government to sanction it’s conscientious objection is forbidden in the first line of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, established as the law of the land since it’s ratification 21 June 1788. It is pathetic that you imply that is not the case. Your religious conviction cannot be condoned, endorsed or approved by the state, read and understand the first ten words of the First Amendment.

This is all part of the United Nations Agenda 21. It’s population control. Read this article and it all becomes clear. http://lewrockwell.com/rep2/al-gore-agenda-21-population-control.html

@ kathleen…… well the UN and our elected officials call it WOMEN RIGHTS. by calling it WOMEN RIGHTS they are trying to put you in a box, your not against womens rights are you. they use a lot of nice soundings words in order to fool you. too many, meaning most in washington have bought into agenda 21. the fight against this crap needs to be turned up in every level of government, be careful of who you vote for and know their view on agenda 21.

KATHLEEN… If population control is part of it why can’t we even control the border so we can have more room for legals.

We need to vote the Democrats out of the Senate. It does not matter who is President if the Senate remains Democrat. Nothing will ever get passed or repealed to get to the President.

if the republicans don’t control the house and senate after nov 2012 WE ARE LOST. can you fathom what America will be like with BO as prez and the demorats control the house and senate,BO will be unbound. he will take that as a mandate for his policies. we will be screwed big time.

Recognize that Progressives exist in BOTH the GOP and the DNC. Vote out all Progressives regardless of party as they are different sides of the same statist coin. Those unwilling to protect and defend the US Constitution are unfit for office.

Yes, but that has to coincide with the District of Columbia falling into a black hole. Keeping fingers crossed.
